Ah, I see Jim. D'oh!
Unfortunately I still can't find anything on a male called J. Gatrell.
There's few of that surname and the only one with a Scottish connection seems to be Wallace Gatrell of the Cameronians.

Do you have the DC? She may have been a civilian nurse, in which case, she will not qualify. _________________ Jim

From what I can find online HMS Crescent was a ship rather than a shore establishment which I would have expected a stewardess to be attached to.

It apppears from March 1916 she was an unarmed Reserve ship used for Submarine Depot supply at Scapa, Rosyth and later Oban.
From August 1918-1919, HMS Crescent was the depot ship for the 3rd Submarine Flotilla at Rosyth and would explain why shore staff were posted to her. _________________ Jim

On Dunfermline WW1 memorial is listed Catherine Miller.
It appears she may be a recent "non-comm" from burial info.
Name: MILLER, CATHERINE COOK
Initials: C C
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Nurse (Assistant)
Regiment/Service: Territorial Force Nursing Service
Unit Text: 1st Western General Hospital.
Age: 30
Date of Death: 24/12/1918
Additional information: Daughter of William and Isabella Miller of Dunfermline.
N.B.: Recent research has shown that Assisant Nurse Miller is buried here.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: ED. 1694
Cemetery: DUNFERMLINE CEMETERY
Of Jeannie Steele who is also listed I can find no record on CWGC or SNWM. It could be Steele is her maiden name and she is remembered under her married name, or vice versa?
Cheers,
Derek. |
