Tillicoultry War Memorial Trail

A mini war memorial trail has been launched in Tillicoultry. The project was a joint venture between Tillicoultry, Coalsnaughton and Devonside Community Council and Councillor Archie Drummond who wrote the following to explain the project:

It started in 2012 when a friend asked me what I was going to do about the war memorial in Tillicoultry. It was evident that the WW1 Memorial, in Tillicoultry Cemetery was tired; it was unclean, a bit mossy, had failed pointing, faded names and rough surroundings which all needed seeing to.

I learned that the War Memorials Trust was to make funding available during the centenary of WW1 for conservation works to memorials to the fallen so, with endorsement from the Community Council, started there.

I have had a long standing affection for the Devonvale Mills Memorial which, to me, is a beautiful piece of public art in its own right and nobody else seemed to be aware of the renowned hand that created it.

The project started as a simple attempt to conserve the communities' heritage, i.e. The memorials. Along the way the community inherited the VC Memorial plaques that were “inaugurated” in September 2015 on the High Street, Tillicoultry,

Learning just how much people didn’t seem to know about those recorded there and the community they lived in, I decided conservation was not enough and that information had to be included. Hence the addition of the Interpretation Panels.

They were not designed to tell all that can be told, there was never going to be enough space for that. What I have tried to achieve is a taster for locals and visitors alike of some of the heritage of this community and to encourage readers to do their own exploring.

Today there are three panels, located at Moss Road, Tillicoultry Cemetery and High Street so a mini trail exists. I hope that others might find yet more of our local heritage worthy of including at some stage. Time will tell.

The two VC recipients are to be recorded for posterity in streets named in their honour. James Pollock Court is a new street on the site of the former primary school and James Dawson Court will be built as phase two of the same development.

The Funding for the project came from donations from John Marshall OBE; Sterling Furniture Group and Alloa and District Round Table plus grants from: War Memorials Trust; Clackmannanshire and Stirling Environment Trust and Clackmannanshire Council, EDF Community Fund and the Scottish Government Community Choices Programme.
