Anne

I have now seen the Gordons records for 7131 which is certainly the correct James Esson from the NOK, but he was not born at Denny / Dunipace as recorded. As you suggest there does seem to be something odd with the medal awards for SA on the Gordons and SA records, they don't agree.
I had found the medal entitlement for the only James Esson listed as Gordons ie. 7131, but he did not qualify for Paardeberg as you point out.

Unusually, we are only getting this info because his files survived the Luftwafffe Blitz of WW2.

I think the discrepancies are only glaring because we are thoroughly cross-referencing and examining every minute detail to prove/disprove it's the right man.

In 'normal' circumstances, we accept wee differences (like places of birth) and approximate dates of birth/ages can vary as we know between various pieces of documentation, but Jimmy has proved to have been a challenge.

For anyone else following this this thread, it might be interesting to note that on his Gordons (Boer War) papers, the following has been written:

"Discharged - Incorrigible & Worthless. Private" 29th November 1902,
Forfeiting all of his previous service which amounted to almost 2 years.

He originally enlisted at Stirling on 15th January 1900 at the age of 14 years 3 months (fibbing that he was 18 years 3 months).

He was just a wee boy!!

Laughing

Maybe too many wrestling bouts affected his brain!

He's certainly kept us entertained this last wee while.

Special thanks to Pierre Vandervelden for the photo of James Esson's gravestone at Robermont Cemetery.
