Hi,
I am new to the forum. I have recently researched the history of the (approx. 120) servicemen commemorated on the Inverkeithing WW1 memorial. I have researched the units they served in and where they are buried/commemorated (and visited some 70 of them to pay my respects). I have been unable to find any details on the below men. If any member of this forum has any information on one of them I would appreciate if you could share this with me:
George Borthwick, James F Borthwick, James A Anderson, David Brown, Arthur E Bryant, Charles Burnett, John Charlton, Crawford Cooper, William Donaldson, Cecil Horne, William H Kay, David Macnamara, James McGovern, Andrew McKay, Alexander McLean, Alexander Nicolson, John Petrie, William Pryde, Francis Smith, Robert Thornton, William Thornton.
Kind Regards,
A Morris |

John,
Thankyou for your email and this info on two of the men. I am not able to send private messages, as I get an error stating I do not have administration rights.
I live in the Netherlands now so I will follow up your advice next time I am back home in Inverkeithing.
Kind Regards,
Alex |

When you registered you did not provide any extra information on your profile which means I was not sure if you were a spammer or not.
I have now amended your profile and you should have the ability to send a PM.
We don't have many posts on the Inverkeithing War Memorial thread so if you have any information about the memorial or the men listed which you would like to add to the forum we'd be delighted to read it.
Kind regards.

Adam,
Thanks for giving me the PM access. I would surely like to share some of my findings with other members. I have found it very emotional researching the records of these men and paying my belated respects. As a young boy I passed the memorial 2 or 3 times a day on my way to Inverkeithing Primary School, hardly giving it a second thought - except perhaps on the days after remembrance Sunday. The men commemorated on the memorial fought in the battles of the 1914 retreat from Mons, Loos, The Somme, Arras, Paschendaele, The Spring 1918 German Offensives and finally the Advance to Victory. Five names commemorate seaman from the Royal Navy - sofar I have not traced any members of the RFC/RAF. Some of these poor men managed to survive the horrors of battle only to die from TB or influenza after the armistice. I would like to share more details in future postings
In the 1970's the memorial was relocated to a more prominent location on the main road leading into the High Street.
Rgds,
Alex |

You mention men dying of TB / Influenza after the Armistice. I would be interested in the details of any such men not found on CWGC.
This might be Pryde. 16537 was born Auchterderran Fife, enlisted Cowdenbeath.
Name: PRYDE, WILLIAM
Initials: W
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Highland Light Infantry
Unit Text: 1st Bn.
Date of Death: 17/05/1915
Service No: 16537
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 37 and 38.
Memorial: LE TOURET MEMORIAL _________________ Jim

Jim,
Thanks for the info. I already have this W Pryde on my list of possibles - but sofar I have not been able to find any definitive record for him with a link to Inverkeithing. Here are the ones not on CWGC that I have some details of dying from TB/influenza:
Name: James Binning
Born: Hillend abt 1892 (brother of Gunner Rober Binning (81580) RGA KIA 4/11/1916)
Enlisted: Inverkeithing 12/12/1915
Regiment: Black Watch (think 4th Btn - difficult to read from attestation papers)
Service No. 264964 (again difficult to read from attestation papers)
Died: 21/2/1919 from influenza
Name: David Gallie
Enlisted: Inverkeithing 10/2/1915
Regiment: Army Service Corps
Service No. M/2/049078
Discharged from Service: 2/10/1916 suffering from TB
Died: 1919-1924 (data from Scotland People)
Any info you could provide would be appreciated.
Rgds,
Alex |

Alex
I checked Binning and Gallie
Binning was 267969, 1st / 6th Royal Highlanders ( Black Watch), formerly Scottish Horse, when discharged in April 1918.
He will not qualify for CWGC as his death is not due to the reason for his discharge. He was dischaged due a penetrating GSW to the chest. As you may know, Spanish flu was rife in the UK at the time.
David Gallie will not qualify as he died in 1922 and so is outwith the CWGC cut off date, 31st August 1921. _________________ Jim

Jim,
Thanks for the information:
1. Can you tell me the date of death for David Gallie?
2. Do you have any details where both may be buried?
Rgds,

I do not have the date as the Death Certificate would have to be ordered on Scotland's People. You could register here http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
The only David Gallie died at Inverkeithing age 48 in 1922. I expect he might be buried in the local area.
On a quick search, there is no sign of Binning died in Scotland _________________ Jim
