DUNLOP.- Previously reported missing now officially presumed killed in action on 20th May, 1917, Private Robert Dunlop, H.L.I., aged 21 years, elder son of John Dunlop, draper, and Mrs Dunlop, Ravenston, Gladstone Road, Saltcoats."

SDGW - Born Stevenston; lived Saltcoats; enlisted Glasgow.

1901 Census Ayrs., Saltcoats, 54 Parkend Road. Robert Dunlop (5) scholar, listed amongst the family of John Dunlop, draper. Place of birth of all children has been transcribed "Saltcoats".

The service record for George when he joined the Territorials in 1912 shows that he was working for Nobels Explosive Coy, Chemical Row, Stevenston and enlisted at Ardrossan. His next of kin was his mother living in Magherasaul, Co. Down. The service record has the surname spelling as "McLUGHAN"

George is on the "Ireland's Memorial records 1914-1918" as follows
"McLUCHAN, GEORGE. Reg. No. 228109. Rank, Gunner, Royal Field Artillery; died France, June 11, 1918; born Drunigollan, Co. Down"

The 1901 census shows Lauchlan J and his parents Archibald and Caroline and his siblings - Christina(23); Barbara (26); Archibald (14); Caroline (12); Maggie Ann (9); Georgina (2); and a cousin Christina Fyfe (16 born United States) ; living at 16 Dockhead Street Saltcoats. His father was a wine and spirit merchant and Lauchlan aged 18 was an apprentice plumber. In 1911 the family were living at a house named "Dalmally" near Parkend Road, Saltcoats. Lauchlan was born at Laggan, Inverness shire.

A family tree on ancestry.com gives his date of birth as 31 August 1882.

The service records and the 1911 census have "John" - Lauchlan's middle name. He was employed for 7 years as an apprentice with Jas Hunter, Saltcoats and enlisted in Ardrossan. He was a Private in the 3rd Cameron Highlanders service number 12855. He was invalided from service because of "acute mania". He died on 4 September 1916 in Ayr District Asylum, his usual address was 60 Gladstone Road, Saltcoats. His death record shows occupation as "Private 3rd Battalion Lochiels Camerons formerly manager in Licensed Premises"

The Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald war database has an entry for Jesse showing "Ardrossan" and "of James Street, Devonport"

The Naval Casualties transcription shows Jesse date of birth as 9 August 1883 and his next of kin as wife Emily of 87 James Street, Devonport

The memorial has the name spelling "Saunders" but the newspaper and CWGC and Naval Information has "Sanders"

HMS Marmion was in collision with HMS Tirade in bad weather off Lerwick, Shetland Islands. Both ships were escorting a convoy across the North Sea. The Tirade suffered little damage but the Marmion foundered.

The record of soldiers effects shows Alexanders war gratuity paid to his widow Jean and there is a stamp attached saying "Died after discharge"

The death record at scotlandspeople shows Alexander Beaton Scobie, butchers salesman, army pensioner, died on 19 September 1918 at 23 Chapelwell Street, Saltcoats of tubercular disease of the spine. His parents were George, railway labourer, and Martha, nee Milligan, both deceased. His wife is recorded as Jeanie Forbes

The "Royal Navy and Royal Marine War Graves Roll 1914-1919" shows John was born in Myross, County Cork, Ireland and his father initial J lived at Union Hall, Cork

The death records on scotlandspeople show that John was single, and died on board HM Ship "Pactolus" in Ardrossan Harbour. He was 24 years of age, and his parents were James Kelly, fisherman, and Norah Kelly, nee Connell. He died of "submersion and shock" There is a register of corrected entries for John which has the additional information that John's usual residence was HM Ship "Thorn" then in Ardrossan Harbour.

There are several family trees on ancestry with James and his family which show he was born on 1 February 1990 in West Kilbride; his parents married and in Saltcoats and his father died in Saltcoats

James is also on the West Kilbride memorial
