Thanks Ken. Dundonian James Chalmers is also commemorated on the Clyne War Memorial in Brora. His parents cam from humble backgrounds and it looks like Lt Chalmers had worked his way up in the world. I think he may have been a teacher in Brora before the war but that is still to be confirmed.
Thanks

|
|
Looking at the minutes of the St Andrews&Dundee Provincial Training Centre for 1919 reveals an anomaly.
Seven men who died and are listed in the Roll of Service as of 26 December 1918 are not on the Memorial whilst Patrick Anderson, who is not listed as dead but who subsequently died,is indeed on the Memorial.
So far i have not been able to uncover why this occurred.
The missing names are:
John B Beveridge
James R Dow
William G Duncan
James B Gibson
Fred T Mackenzie
George C Miller
James W Pryde
Unveiling
The service and ceremony of unveiling was held in the College Hall on 22nd February 1924.The Rev Mr Nelson,Chairman of the Provincial Committee, presided and Mr James Malloch,Executive Officer of the National Committee, and who was Director of Studies during the war years, unveiled the Memorial. The Very Rev Principal Galloway offered up the Dedicatory Prayer, after which the Director of Studies,on behalf of the Memorial Committee, handed over the Memorial to the keeping of the Chairman and Members of the St Andrews&Dundee Provincial Committee
Another riddle is that many of those who died came from Wales and Northern England to study in Dundee-does anyone know why when Newcastle,Edinburgh etc had training centres?
More details on all the names in due course! |
