I make an apology now because the next picture is a little off-topic (and apologies if you have already read it elsewhere). This is the photo of William Charteris's war grave in Dunscore churchyard. He is listed on this memorial. I spoke to a very elderly relative about the sad state of the grave and she commented "Charteris? aye, they're all gone" so it seems that this soldier is in more need of commemoration than most. I have written to the Highlanders association to make them aware of it but I am equally sure that they will not have any funds for such a project.

I read somewhere recently that the village were planning to add Jane Hainings name to the war memorial. Any news on this? |

Haven't heard anything.
I might be down that way in the next few days, will try and find out.
I will be in Dumfries academy later today or tomorrow, will check to see if they have an unlisted memorial to her. |

I had a very nice letter today from a former colleague now working at the Highlanders Regimental Association thanking me for bringing the state of Pte Charteris's grave to their attention. The information will go to the highest level but generally Regimental Associations only spend money on those still living so it is unlikely they can do anything unless a benefactor turns up, but at least they are aware and some are thinking about the man which is what we are all about after all. |

I spoke to the keyholder for Dunscore church today, there are no plans to add Jane Haining to the local war memorial. There is however a new memorial to Jane close to the church on an area of grass beside the car park for the graveyard. The memorial was dedicated in 2005 - I photographed it today but unfortunately, due to incompetance on my part, the photos failed so I will have to go back and try again. |
