David McLelland is either 1340 or S/8296

His men is Private David McClelland Service No 1340, 2nd Bn Gordon Highlanders missing in action 25/9/1915 age 20 years.
The spelling on WM's and Rolls is McLELLAND and all records, civil and military as McCLELLAND. David's parents were David McClelland and Janet Fisher who married 25/12/1894. His father lost his first wife Jane Johnston in 1894 after birth of their third son - John James b 1887; Robert b 1893 and James b 1894. David and his 3 step-brothers all joined services and they all lost their lives, they are all commemorated on Crossmichael WM and Roll of Honour in Crossmichale Parish Church and on a plaque in Crossmichal Village Hall - refer to site for 'spoons' notes on plaque and hall. Brothers are - Robert Service No S/7830 missing 17/5/1915 and John Service No 9764 killed in action 19/12/1915 both in Gordon Highlanders; John also recoded on Colvend WM. Brother James served as James Johnston Service No 13664 in High Light Infantry missing 28/11/1917. Lots of notes from Ken.
On 11/12/1921 Crossmichale WM unveiled by Mrs Jamet McClelland, mother of David and step mother to her 3 lads.

This was difficult men to find and tie into Dunscore WM. Not able to find birth or his parents. Find he is commemorated on 3 other WM's; stained glass window; and church roll of honour. WM's are - New Abbey, down as at Lanecroft; Lockerbie and Applegarth. On roll of honour in Applegarth Church; the Wm outside no names only to Parish of Applegarth. Two stained glass windows in Applegarth Church in memory to all died in Great War - the windows tell the war story with badges etc. Look on site for Applegarth Church.
