I have decided to feature Adam Byers in my talk to the school for remembrance day. I have his service record, a group photo and the entry from the bn war diary. Does anyone else happen to have anything of interest? Is there a Regimental memorial that he might be on somewhere?
He was the only man of his Bn who died on that day (28th May 1916 near Hulluch) so it is a touch of 'All quiet on the western front'.

Do you have a copy of the article in the local newspaper reporting his death?

If I may ask; Anne has posted this chap's rank as Lance Serjeant whilst the image above mentions L-Sgt (presumably Sergeant).
Are the words simply interchangeable? I'd always believed it had something to do with traditional usage within a particular regiment or corps.
Thanks,

As far as I know Serjeant was the official spelling in the Army but Sergeant was in common useage and the two are interchangeable. It may well have been a regimental decision which spelling to use.
In CWGC they use Serjeant for the First World War and Sergeant for the second.
A Lance Sergeant can also be seen as L/Sgt or L/Sjt. They were senior corporals acting as sergeants.

In the present day, Serjeant (with a j) is still used by the Guards Regiments and the Serjeant at Arms in the House of Commons but I think everyone else has gone over to Sergeant.

By an amazing coincidence, Teddy mailed me saying she had met Byers Gt Nephew who was looking for info on him. We have been in touch and I will post the info I have on Adam Byers on the New Galloway thread after 11th November.
