Ellishader & Valtos - Isle of Skye

This war memorial stands on the roadside half-way between the communities of Ellishader and Valtos, near the Kilt Rock View Point, on the Isle of Skye so I would assume that it serves both communities.
It is a tall grey polished granite tapering pedestal set on a squre base and surmounted by a draped urn sculpture.

Jim

Looking at the OS get-a-map site they have a war memorial South of Valtos between Valtos and Herishader / Culnacnoc rather than Ellishader at NG 515 630.

This must be the entry 5905 in UKNIWM as Culnaknock. Is this your memorial do you think?

Should this one be moved to school memorials? According to the text on the page linked to below, the men named on the memorial were from the school that the memorial was placed outside of.

Looks like the web address doesn't conform to that understood by the forum software, so you will need to copy it all and paste it into your web browser address bar.

Placename: War memorial (Bhaltos)

Description

Culnacnoc or Valtos War Memorial was erected in front of the old Valtos school in memory of the seven former pupils who paid the supreme sacrifice in the Great War. It was unveiled on the 9th August 1921 by Captain Martin Nicol of Glendale. The Memorial, which is almost eleven feet high, cost £150, and this cost was met by subscriptions from former pupils at home and abroad. This War Memorial also commemorates the numbers of people from the area who served in defence of Home, Country and King during the Great War. (extracted from the Roll of Honour for Skye and Lochalsh compiled by Graham Ross, circa 2000, a copy of which may be viewed at Dualchas Skye and Lochalsh Museums Service in Portree, Isle of Skye) The War Memorial is situated at the side of the A855 at Valtos.

Area: Bhaltos

OS Grid Ref: 5156 6309

OS Map ref: NG51566309

Again, I'm confused:

The list of names at: http://www.staffin.net/data/localhistory/warMems/Valtos%20WarMemorial%20Names.htm

states: "He is also commemorated on the Valtos/Culnacnoc war memorial." or some entries just state "He is also commemorated on the Culnacnoc War Memorial."

ALSO?

I'm happy for this to remain in the Civic section. I think the school reference is a bit of a red herring. Even if the memorial had been placed elsewhere they all would have still gone to the school.

I have edited the post title from Ellishader & Valtos to Culnacnoc and Valtos.

The title of the WMR report has now been corrected, 9 years later, as has the distinctly incorrect grid reference
