I should haver made myself clearer:

There were 4 Mochrie brothers who paid the ultimate sacrifice during the Great War; 3 were killed at Loos in 1915 and the fourth at Arras in 1917: another Mochrie died on 25 Sep 1915 and is commemorated on the Menin Gate (rather than the Loos Memorial)

James, Matthew, Robert and Andrew were brothers - they apparently had another brother and sister who served and survived. There is no indication on CWGC that Thomas Mochrie was a relation.

One of the reports in one of the papers does say that I am an exiled Scot living in Sassanachshire.

Thanks for the kind comments on doing the boys proud. There is a heck of a lot more to tell on them, all in due course.

I have just read a thread posted on GWF regarding the Mochries. One of the contributors is a relative! Apparently 35 Mochries served; 9 paid the ultimate price.

The following soldier is NOT listed on this memorial, but as he has Kibbirnie connections I have posted him here for reference.

GILLEN, James (John) Private 6480 1st Bn Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers
Born: Kilbirney, Lanarkshire *Resided: Glenbuck, Co Antrim Enlisted: Belfast.
Age: 33 Date of Death: 31/07/1915 Cause: Killed in action.
Family Notes: Nephew of, Miss Mary Gillen, of Glenbuck, Dunloy, Co. Antrim.
Religion: Roman Catholic.

Intimation has been received by his friends in the Dunloy District that Private John Gillen has been killed in action at the Dardanelles. Private Gillen was an Army Reserve man, and rejoined at the start of the war, and being wounded three months afterwards. He recovered however and went back to the firing line, and was killed in action on the Gallipoli Peninsula. Before the war he acted as an instructor in the Dunloy Branch of the National Volunteers.

Other notes: Private Gillen’s Medal Index Card shows him as entering the French Theatre of Operations on 29/8/1914.
Census Notes: The 1911 Census shows a “John” Gillen (aged 31, born in Scotland) as a resident in the home of his aunt, Mary Gillen in Glenbuck, Co Antrim.
Special Notes: The newspaper item names Private Gillen as “John”, as does the 1911 Census; a search of the IWM records, Soldiers Died (Part 32) and the CWGC shows no “John Gillen” only “James Gillen,” it would appear that “John” is the name he went by.
Grave/Memorial: Addenda panel Helles Memorial.
Other memorials: Private Gillen is named in the Scottish Roll of Honour in the Scottish National War Memorial, Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh.

"Private James Quigley of the 2nd Royal Scots Fusiliers, writing to his brother in Kilbirnie on the 14th inst. from Hornbrook Hospital, Chislehurst, Kent, says "I am in good health but have been wounded in the right hip - a souvenir from the Germans" Private Quigley adds "There was a chap called Andrew Bryce in the same company as me in France who came from Glengarnock. He was killed on Thursday, just before I was hit. I was standing beside him, when he was shot right through the heart.""

"Word has been received from two Kilbirnie men in the fighting line that Private William McEwan, of the Royal Scots Fusiliers, had been killed at the battle of Neuve Chapelle. Private McEwan was a native of Kilbirnie, 35 years of age, single, a steelworker at Glengarnock, and joined Kitchener's army in August. He had been in France only five or six weeks."
