CPL. DAVID GOLDIE, BLK.WATCH.
David Weir Goldie – age 30 – Corporal (16) 1st Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
David was a butcher to trade and worked in the Dumfries slaughter-house. As a reservist he was mobilised and rejoined his old regiment, landing at Le Havre on 13 August 1914. He was severely wounded at Mons but after treatment in hospital and at home he was able to return to the front.
Born 1884 in Dumfries. Son of the late John Goldie and of Agnes (Richardson) Goldie of Friars Vennel, Dumfries. Husband of Mary Annie (Richardson) Goldie of 32 Munches Street, Dumfries who he married in 1909 in Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 16 June 1915 and buried in Guards Cemetery, Windy Corner, Cuinchy, France.


L-CPL. W. GORDON, KOSB.
William Gordon – age 33 – Lance Corporal (5224) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was employed as a stoker at the Dumfries Gasworks when, as a reservist, he was mobilised in August 1914. He joined his battalion in France in November 1914.
Born 1882 in Dumfries. Son of Thomas Gordon and of Jessie Copland (Brydson) Gordon of Dumfries. Husband of Johnann (Clint) Gordon (later McEwan) of 34 Queensberry Street, Dumfries who he married in 1914 in Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 8 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France,
Also named on the St John's Episcopal Church memorial in Dumfries.


PTE. JAMES GORMAN, KOSB.
James Gorman – age 22 – Private (2144) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James had been a locomotive fireman with the Caledonian Railway Company. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915.
Born 1893 in Dumfries. Son of James and Elizabeth (Nicholson) Gorman of 34 Queensbury Street, Dumfries. Husband of Annie (Kirk) Gorman of 60 Queensberry Street, Dumfries and of 107 Blackburn Street, Plantation, South Side, Glasgow, who he married in 1913 in Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 9 December 1915 and buried in Redoubt Cemetery, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the St John's Episcopal Church memorial in Dumfries.


PTE. JAMES GOURLAY, KOSB.
James McGregor Gourlay – age 18 – Private (1775) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway), King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a former pupil of the Dalbeattie Higher Grade Public School and of Noblehill School in Dumfries before being employed as a printer in Dumfries. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915.
Born 1896 at Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Alexander and Annie (McGregor) Gourlay of Union Street, Dalbeattie and of 10 Irving Terrace, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Dalbeattie War Memorial.

Note: birth records and the 1891 census have the family name as Creasey but by 1901 it is Gracie.
Alexander Gracie – age 24 – Private (11633) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Alexander joined his battalion in France in September 1914.
Born 1890 in Dumfries as Alexander McKay Creasey.
Son of Stephen and Mary (McKay) Gracie of 42 Loreburn Street, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 8 December 1914 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

His brother also fell but is not named on the War Memorial.
Stephen Gracie – age 34 – Private (6917) 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Stephen landed with his battalion at Le Havre on 14 August 1914.
Born 1881 in Dumfries as Steven John McKay Creasey.
Son of Stephen and Mary (McKay) Gracie of 42 Loreburn Street, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 5 November 1914 and buried in Vlamertinghe Military Cemetery, Belgium.

The brothers are named on the St. John's Church memorial in Dumfries as CREASY.


GUNNR. H. C. GRACIE, R.F.A.
Hamilton Cameron Gracie – age 25 – Gunner (84381) 55th Battery, Royal Field Artillery.
Hamilton enlisted in Dumfries and went to France in November 1915.
The 55th Battery was formed in early 1919 for service in Russia with the new 3.7 inch mountain howitzer. They spent 4 months fighting the Bolshevik forces before they were withdrawn.
Born 1894 in Perth. Son of the late James Gracie and of Lizzie H. Gracie of Dunard, Cardross, Dunbartonshire. Nephew of Margaret N. Gracie of 43 St. Michael's Street, Dumfries with whom he lived.
Died of Wounds on 30 June 1919 and buried in Troitza Churchyard but named on a special memorial in Archangel Allied Cemetery, Russia.


LT. J. J. GRACIE, M.C. KOSB.
John James Gracie, Military Cross – age 31 – Lieutenant:1st Battalion attached to 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Formerly Sergeant (9541) 1st KOSB.
In 1911 John was with 1st KOSB in India. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in April 1915 and served at the Somme in 1916 where he was awarded the M.C. as No. 9541 Co. S./M. John James Gracie, K.O. Sco. Bord.
For conspicuous gallantry in action. When all his officers became casualties he took command of his company, and held his ground with great determination till ordered to withdraw. He has done fine work since the war started.”
He was promoted to Lieutenant in July 1918.
Born 1887 in Dumfries. Son of Mary (Wilson) Gracie and of the late John Gracie.
Stepson of David Williamson and of Mary (Wilson) Williamson of 116 Irish Street, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 17 September 1918 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.

PTE. ALEX. F. GRAHAM, R.S.
Alexander Foster Graham – age 25 – Private (27985) 17th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Alexander was working as a van man for the Co-operative in Dumfries when he enlisted in January 1916 in the 15th (1st Edinburgh) Royal Scots. He was badly wounded in August 1916 and spent some time in hospital in Ireland before he returned to France in January 1917. He was badly wounded again in September 1918, losing an eye, and was evacuated to the 4th General Hospital in London where he died.
Born 1893 in Maxwelltown, Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of the late William Foster Graham and of Agnes (Watson) Graham (formerly Mrs. Fraser) of Moy House, 31 Brooke Street, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 27 September 1918 and buried in Dumfries (St. Michael's) Cemetery.
Also named on the St. Michael's Church memorial in Dumfries.

James Graham – age 23 – Private (40544) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Formerly Private (22751) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a clerk with the Glasgow & South Western Railway at Dumfries Station when he enlisted in December 1915. He was posted initially to the 7th/8th KOSB but was transferred to the RSF and served in various battalions until posted to the 2nd RSF in May 1918.
Born 1896 in Southwick, Colvend, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of the late Isabella (Jardine) Graham and of Quintin McGill Graham of 6 Wallace Street, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 20 October 1918 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Dumfries and on the G&SW Railway Memorial, now in Ayr Station.

James Graham – age 30 – Private (29346) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a cabinetmaker in Dumfries. In 1912 he was working at the Crichton Royal Institution. He was killed during the attack on Fouchy village, near Arras.
Born c.1887 in Dumfries. Son of the late Robert and Margaret Jane (Clint) Graham. Husband of Agnes (Dickson) Graham of Galloway View, Dockhead, Dumfries who he married in 1912 in Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 9 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.

John Graham – age 21 – Private (31164) 218th Company, Machine Gun Corps.
John was a painter to trade and was living at 40 Friars Vennel, Dumfries when he enlisted in January 1916. He was posted to the MGC and went to France in May 1916. He was wounded in and evacuated to hospital in England before returning to France in March 1917.
Born c.1895 in Edinburgh. Son of Elsie Graham of Charles Street, Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 16 August 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

Thomas John Graham – age 20 – Private (S/17662) 1/5th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Educated at St. John's School in Dumfries, Thomas was an apprentice upholsterer when he enlisted in 1916.
Born 1898 in Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire. Son of Thomas and Agnes (Beck) Graham of 64 Buccleuch Street, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 28 September 1918 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the St John's School Memorial, now inside St John's Episcopal Church, and on the St Mary's Church memorial in Dumfries.


PTE. R. GRIBBON, SEAFORTH H.
Robert Gribbon – age 19 – Private (S/25782) 7th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Robert had been working at Gretna when he enlisted. He had been in France for just 3 months when he was killed.
Born 1898 in Moffat, Dumfriesshire. Son of Alexander and Janet Gribbon of Holland Bush, Gasstown, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 22 March 1918 and named on the Pozieres Memorial, France.
Also named on the St. Michael's Church memorial in Dumfries.


PTE. W. M. GRIER, R.S.
William MacDonald Grier – age 33 – Private (50505) 2/10th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Formerly Private (24614) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was a Stationers Warehouseman in Dumfries when he enlisted in the 6th KOSB in June 1916. He transferred to the Royal Scots in October 1917. The 2/10th Royal Scots moved to North Russia in August 1918 as part of the Archangel Force.
Born 1885 in Lugar, Ayrshire. Son of William MacDonald Grier and of Elizabeth Campbell (Wallace) Grier of Mochrum, Wigtownshire. Husband of Margaret (Milroy) Grier of Queensberry Street, Dumfries who he married in 1911 in Glenluce, Wigtownshire.
Killed in Action on 27 October 1918 and named on the Archangel Memorial, Russia.
Also named on the Mochrum Parish War Memorial in Port William, Wigtownshire.


PTE. T. B. GRIFFIN, KOSB.
Thomas Bernard Griffin – age 19 – Private (17358) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Born 1899 in Dumfries. Son of Charles Power Griffin of Salmond Cottage, Crosslie, Johnstone, Renfrewshire, and of Ellen (Bruce) Griffin who in 1901 was at the Militia Barracks in Dumfries with Thomas. Charles and Ellen had married in 1898 in Berwick, so it is possible that Charles served with the KOSB.
Missing in Action on 18 August 1918 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.

William John (Jack) Haining – age 22 – Second Lieutenant: 3rd Battalion attached to 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
“Jack” enlisted as a Private in September 1914. He was selected for Officer training and commissioned in October 1915.
Born 1894 in Dumfries. Son of the late George Haining and of Wilhelmina (Boyd) Haining of 3 Gordon Street, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 28 January 1917 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Dumfries Academy Memorial, on the Greyfriars Church memorial and on the St Mary's Church memorial, both in Dumfries.


PTE. JOHN HALL, KOSB.
In some newspaper reports this man is referred to as Jack Hall.
James Hall – age (29) – Private (817) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was employed at the Nithsdale Mills and was an Army Reservist who had joined the Territorials some years ago. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915.
Born c.1886 in Hawick, Roxburghshire. Son of ??? Husband of Mary Hall (later Mrs. Sutherland) of 164 High Street, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 13 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.


PTE. WILLIAM HALLIDAY, KOSB.

William Halliday – age 30 – Private (38389) 8th Battalion, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.
Formerly Private (23248) 1st King' Own Scottish Borderers.
William was working as a cheesemaker at Redhills, Torthorwald, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted.
Born 1887 at East Kirkcarswell, Rerrick, Kirkcudbrightshire as William Telfer. Son of Jane Telfer, later of Glenhoul Farm, Dalry, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Killed in Action on 10 June 1917 and buried in Bedford House Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium.
Also listed on the Torthorwald Parish War Memorial in Collin Village and on the St Mary's Church memorial in Dumfries.


PTE. ARCH. HANLON, KOSB.
Archibald Hanlon – age 27 – Private (22791) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Archibald was working as a skinner with the Dundas Chemical Company of Dumfries when he enlisted in February 1916. He was posted initially to the 2nd KOSB
Born 1889 in Dumfries. Son of Mary Hanlon of Gasstown, Dumfries.
Husband of Margaret Jane (Carruthers) who he married in 1917 in Dumfries. He was serving with the 3rd KOSB at Duddingston Camp in Edinburgh and Margaret was a munitions worker at Eastriggs, Dornock, Dumfriesshire.
Missing in Action on 30 November 1917 and named on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, France.
Also named on the St. Michael's Church memorial in Dumfries.

PTE. OWEN HANLON, KOSB.
Owen Hanlon – age 29 – Private (40863) 2nd Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Formerly Private (9654) in the 2nd and the 6th King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Owen had enlisted in the KOSB in 1906 and had spent 7 years in India and Egypt. He was discharged, time expired, and returned home in March 1914. He was employed at the Arrol-Johnston Motor Works at Heathhall, Dumfries when in August 1914, as a reservist, he was mobilised. He landed at Le Havre with the 2nd KOSB in August 1914 and served throughout the early years of the war, including at the retreat from Mons. He was wounded on the Somme in July 1916 and returned to France in the October. Records show that he was found drowned but there is no official explanation.
Born 1887 in Dumfries. Son of James and Jane Hanlon of 27 English Street, Dumfries.
Died on Active Service on 4 December 1916 and buried in St. Pierre Cemetery, Amiens, France.


PTE. ROBERT J. HANLON, KOSB.
Robert James Hanlon – age 20 – Private (23371) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Educated at Noblehill School in Dumfries, Robert was employed as a joiner in Dornock in Dumfriesshire when he enlisted. Posted initially to the 1st KOSB, he was a signaller when he was killed.
Born 1896 in Georgetown, Dumfries. Son of Joseph and Maggie Hanlon of Under Craig's Cottage, Georgetown, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 9 April 1917 and buried in Point-du-Jour Military Cemetery, Athies, France.
Also named on the St. Michael's Church memorial in Dumfries.


PTE. ROBERT HANNAH, KOSB.
Robert Hannah – age 21 – Private (751) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was educated at Laurieknowe School, Maxwelltown and was employed as a coach-smith by Sloan's of Whitesands, Dumfries when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915.
Born 1894 in Dumfries. Son of Mary Hannah. Step-son of Thomas Harvey Jackson of 35 Church Street, Maxwelltown.
Killed in Action on 23 July 1915 and buried in Pink Farm Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also listed on the Maxwelltown/Troqueer War Memorial.


PTE. W. C. HANNAY, KOSB.
William Carswell Hannay – age 20 – Private (40182) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Educated at St. John's School in Dumfries, William was a shoemaker in Dumfries when he enlisted in the 2/5th KOSB in 1914. He was posted to France in mid-1916 and had been at the front for only a couple of months.
Born 1896 in Dumfries. Son of William and Isabella Hannay of 21 Shakespeare Street, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 15 September 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the St John's School Memorial, now inside St John's Episcopal Church, and on the church memorial.

William Carradine Harding – age 20 – Private (23605) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Educated at Noblehill School in Dumfries, William was an assistant to the Dumfries Sanitary Inspector when he enlisted in May 1916. He went to France in the September.
Born 1896 in Dumfries. Son of William and Eleanor (Carradice) Harding of Greenbrae House, 93 Lockerbie Road, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 27 October 1916 and buried in the A.I.F. Burial Ground, Flers, France.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Dumfries.

Archibald Gracie Hastie – age 33 – Corporal (4/9448) 1/8th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Archibald and his family were living in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire when he enlisted in August 1914.
He served with the 10th the 11th and 2nd Battalions of the Argylls.
Born 1885 in Dumfries. Son of David Halbert Hastie and of Jane Mary (Gracie) Hastie of Dumfries. Husband of Margaret Robert (Halliday) Hastie who he married in 1908 in Glasgow.
Missing in Action on 23 July 1918 and named on the Soissons Memorial, Aisne, France.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Dumfries and on the Coatbridge War Memorial.


PTE. R. C. HASTINGS, S.R.
Robert Carruthers Hastings – age 22 – Private (41091) 1/8th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Robert was employed at the Penman Motor Works in Dumfries when he enlisted in September 1914. He went to France in 1916 and served with the 10th and 1st Battalions before he joined the 1/8th. He was fatally wounded in early August 1918 and died in the 1st Australian General Hospital in Rouen.
Born 1896 in Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of David Herries Hastings and of Maxwellina (Carruthers) Hastings of 93 Friars Vennel, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 17 August 1918 and buried in St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France.
Also named on the former Laurieknowe Church memorial now in Troqueer Parish church.


PTE. JOHN HAWKINS, H.L.I.
John Hawkins – age 20 – Private (21958) 18th (Glasgow Yeomanry) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. Formerly Private (23763) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John had been in France with the HLI since June 1917.
Born 1898 in Dumfries. Son of William John and Margaret Hawkins of 71 Loreburn Street, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 26 March 1918 and named on the Pozieres Memorial, France.
Also named on the St. Michael's Church memorial in Dumfries.

George Borthwick Henderson – age 28 – Private (12071) "A" Company, 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George was a baker to trade. He enlisted in October 1914 but just before his battalion left for France he was taken ill and died in the Military Hospital in Farnham, Surrey.
Born 1886 in Dumfries. Son of Joseph Kennedy Henderson and of Margaret (Borthwick) Henderson of Burns Street, Dumfries. Husband of Mary (Campbell) Henderson (later Mrs.Matthews) of 123 St. Michael Street, Dumfries who he married in 1914 in Dumfries.
Died on Active Service on 30 May 1915 and buried in Dumfries (St. Michael's) Churchyard.


SERGT. J. HENDERSON, L.FUS.
I cannot trace personal details for James on birth or census records. His name appears on the Henderson/Haining family gravestone in Dumfries (St. Michael's) Cemetery and his sisters are named as his next of kin on the Army Registers of Soldiers effects.

James Henderson – age ?? – Sergeant (3554) 9th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers.
James served with the 3rd Reserve Battalion before he joined the 2nd Lancs. Fusiliers in France in November 1914. He had another spell with the 3rd before he joined the 9th Battalion in France.
Born ???? in Dumfries. Son of Robert and Euphemia (Haining) Henderson of Dumfries.
Brother of Mrs. Euphemia (Henderson) Laurie and Mrs. Mary (Henderson) McGeorge.
Missing in Action on 26 September 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Dumfries.

James Henderson – age 19 – Lance Sergeant (45661) 4th Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment.
James was a chauffeur at Elmbank House in Dumfries (where his father was a gardener) when he enlisted in December 1917.
Born 1898 in Dumfries. Son of James and Jane (Rountree) Henderson of Elmbank Lodge, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 11 June 1918 and named on the Soissons Memorial, France.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Dumfries.


PTE. JAMES HENDERSON, KOSB.
James Henderson – age 20 – Private (9241 & 201602) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
I think that James was a reservist and that he served as Private (6663) in the 2nd & 1st KOSB until he was time-expired, when he re-enlisted. Pre-war James worked in an aerated water company in Dumfries. He joined his battalion at Gallipoli in August 1915.
Born c.1897 in Dumfries. Son of Richard Henderson and of Mrs. Margaret (Starkland) Johnstone of 61 Friars Vennel, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 19 April 1917 and buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine.

Robert Reid Henderson – age 25 – Private (32389) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Robert had worked as an attendant at the Crichton Royal Institution in Dumfries but was working as a male nurse in private practice in Edinburgh when he enlisted in June 1916. He was initially placed in the Army Reserve but was mobilised in March 1917.
Born 1891 in Lockerbie, Dryfesdale, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late Joseph Henderson and of Margaret Henderson of 2 Burns Street, Dumfries. Husband of Ella Jane (Clark or O'Neil) Henderson (latterly Mrs. McIntyre) of 10 Drumdryan Street, Edinburgh who he married in 1915 in Auchencairn, Rerrick, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Missing in Action on 28 March 1918 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on a memorial plaque in the Crichton Chapel.


SERGT. J. HEWETSON, A.&S.H.
Note: All records spell the name as Hewitson.
John Hewitson – age 23 – Sergeant (7275) 11th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
John was a painter to trade in Dumfries when he enlisted in January 1915. He was posted to the 13th Training Battalion and promoted to acting Sergeant in January 1916. He joined the 11th A&SH in France in June 1916 and died in the 1st Field Ambulance.
Born 1892 in Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire. Son of John and Ellen Hewitson of "Rigghead", Glencaple Road, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 10 August 1916 and buried in Millencourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France. Also named on the St. Michael's Church memorial in Dumfries.


PIPER JAMES HIGGINS, GORDON H.
In March 1918 James admitted to enlisting under an assumed name and that his true name was James Higgins Kerr.
James Higgins Kerr – age 24 – Private (S/7094) 1/7th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
James was working as a motor trimmer when he enlisted in November 1914. He was posted to the 10th Gordons and landed with them in France in May 1915. He was wounded in July 1916, was treated in hospital at Etaples and rejoined his battalion in September. He was transferred to the 1/7th Battalion in early August 1918.
Born 1894 in Dumfries as James Kerr. Son of Margaret (Kerr) Higgins and step-son of James Higgins of 28 Shakespeare Street, Dumfries. Husband of Julia Ward (Hutchinson) Kerr of Glebe Cottage, Glebe Street, Dumfries who he married in 1915 in Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 28 August 1918 and buried in Brown's Copse Cemetery, Roeux, France.


L-CPL. JAMES W. HIGGINS, A.&S.H.
I cannot positively identify this man.
He may be the step-father of James detailed above, who was a traction engine driver in Dumfries.
In 1901 the family were at Shakespeare Street with James 30 (an engine driver), Margaret 27,
James 7, Hugh 2 and Henry 1.
James Higgins of 28 Shakespeare Street joined the Army Service Corps (Motor Transport) in April 1914 but there is no trace of his service record, or what became of him.

PTE. STEWART HOGG, A.&S.H.
Stewart Hogg – age 24 – Private (S/19695) 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Stewart was living at 11 Watt Street, Greenock when he enlisted in December 1915. He was working for the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company as a porter at the Princes Pier Station. Initially he was placed in the Army Reserve but was mobilised in April 1917 and posted to the 11th A&SH in France in the following June. In December he was accidentally wounded in a grenade explosion and evacuated to hospital. On his return to France in May 1918 he was posted to the 2nd Battalion.
Born 1892 in Dumfries. Son of Robert and Margaret Hogg of Netheryett, Annan Road, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 24 September 1918 and buried in Domino British Cemetery, Epehy, France.
Also named on the St. Michael's Church memorial in Dumfries and on the G&SW Railway Memorial now in Ayr Station.


PTE. W. E. H. HOGG, R.S.F.
William Edward H. Hogg – age 37 – Private (33457) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
William was working in the Golden Bull Hotel, High Street, Dumfries when he enlisted.
Born 1879 in Dumfries. Son of Mary Hogg and brother of John Hogg of 5 High Street, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 23 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.


PTE. WILLIAM HOLDEN, KOSB.
William Holden – age 57 – Private (3071) 2/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was on the KOSB National Reserve and had formerly served with the Royal Scots Fusiliers
He died, suddenly, in the Dumfries Royal Infirmary.
Born 1858 in Dumfries. Son of William and Margaret (Gillies) Holden. Husband of Jane (Harrow) Holden of 16 Greyfriars Street, Dumfries who he married in 1883 in Dumfries.
Died on Service on 20 May 1915 and buried in Dumfries (St. Michael's) Cemetery.
Also named on the Greyfriars Church memorial in Dumfries.


SEAMAN W. HOLDEN, R.N.
William Holden – age 24 – Able Seaman (Clyde Z/2490) Anson Battalion, Royal Naval Division, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.
In 1911 William was a carpenter's labourer in a shipyard on the Tees and was living with his mother Margaret Holden and brother Robert Shannon Holden at 17 Mandale Road, Thornaby on Tees. When he enlisted in November 1914 he was employed at the Crichton Royal Institution. He served at Gallipoli in the Drake Battalion from May 1915 and was invalided home in the December to the Naval Hospital at Chatham. He was posted to the Anson battalion in France in July 1916 but was fatally wounded by shrapnel and died in the 49th Casualty Clearing Station.
Born 1892 at Carstairs Junction, Lanarkshire. Son of William and Margaret (Shannon) Holden of Nith Cottage, Castlebank, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 15 November 1916 and buried in Contay British Cemetery, Contay, France.
Also named on the St. Michael's Church memorial in Dumfries and on a memorial plaque in the Crichton Chapel.

John Houston – age 25 – Private (4515 & 241183) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was a footman in Dollar, Clackmannanshire when he enlisted in early 1915. He had been in Egypt and Palestine for 2 years before serving in France.
Born 1892 in Tinwald, Dumfriesshire. Son of John and Agnes Houston of Poplar Bank, Moffat Road, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 29 July 1918 and buried in Raperie British Cemetery, Villemontoire, France.
Also named on the Tinwald Parish War Memorial

William Houston – age 30 – Private (S/20380) 14th (Fife and Forfar Yeomanry) Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
William had also been in service, as a Club Butler. He had been rejected by the army on three previous occasions before he enlisted in Glasgow in December 1916. He was drowned when the "Transylvania", sailing from Marseilles to Egypt with reinforcements, was sunk by the German submarine U-63 off Cape Vado, Italy.
Born 1887 in Tinwald. Son of John and Agnes Houston of Poplar Bank, Moffat Road, Dumfries. Husband of Ellen (Moore) Houston of 492 St. Vincent Street, Glasgow who he married in March 1917 in Glasgow.
Killed by enemy action/ Lost at Sea on 4 May 1917 and named on the Savona Memorial, Italy.
Also named on the Tinwald Parish War Memorial and on the Glasgow Roll of Honour.


PTE. EDWARD HOWAT, BLK.WATCH.
Edward Howat – age 19 – Private (S/6549) 8th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Educated at St. John's School in Dumfries, Edward was employed by J Maxwell and Son, Printers and Publishers of Dumfries when he enlisted. He joined his battalion in France in May 1915.
Born 1896 in Dumfries. Son of John William and Sarah Howat of 117 Broom's Road, Cresswell Terrace, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 11 August 1915 and buried in Gorre British and Indian Cemetery, France.
Also named on the St John's School Memorial, now inside St John's Episcopal Church, on the church memorial and on the Maxwell Company Roll of Honour now in Dumfries Museum.

Educated at St. John's School in Dumfries, John was working as an ironmonger in North Shields when he enlisted. He joined his battalion in France in March 1915.
Born 1895 in Dumfries. Son of John William and Sarah Howat of 117 Broom's Road, Cresswell Terrace, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 1 October 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the St John's School Memorial, now inside St John's Episcopal Church, and on the church memorial.

PTE. AUGUSTINE HULLIN, KOSB.
Augustine Hullin – age 42 – Private (14270) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Augustine had served with the KOSB in the South African War. He was living at St. Michael's Building, Dock Park and employed at the Crichton Royal Institution when he enlisted in August 1914. He went to France in April 1915 but was gassed in June and when he recovered was attached to the Royal Army Medical Corps. He died of illness in the University War Hospital in Southampton.
Born 1874 in Knaresborough, Yorkshire. Son of the late Daniel and Margaret Hullin formerly of Harrogate, Yorkshire and latterly of Dumfries.
Died on Active Service on 10 April 1917 and buried in Dumfries (Holy Cross) Roman Catholic Cemetery.


SIG. HUGH McM. HUME, SEAFORTH H.
Hugh McMillan Hume – age 25 – Private/Signaller (S/7086) Seaforth Highlanders Depot.
Hugh was a hairdresser and living at 62 High Street Sanquhar when he enlisted in January 1915.
He was posted to the 8th Seaforths in France in October 1915 but in July 1916 he was diagnosed with diabetes and in October 1916 he was discharged. He died at his parents home in Dumfries.
Born 1892 in Kirkmahoe, Dumfriesshire. Son the late James Hume and of Mary Hume of 49 High Street, Dumfries.
Died on 6 March 1917 and buried in Dumfries (St. Michael's) Cemetery.
Also named on the Sanquhar War Memorial.


GUNNR. SAMUEL HUME, R.F.A.
Samuel Hume – age 40 – Gunner (28627) "F" Battery, 14th Brigade, Royal Horse Artillery.
Samuel had served with the Imperial Yeomanry in the South African War and then had joined the RHA. After his time had expired he became a coachman with Mr Cutlar-Ferguson of Craigdarroch, Dumfries. In 1911 he and his family were living in Markinch in Fife where he was a coachman and, as a reservist, he was mobilised in August 1914. He rejoined his old regiment and landed in France with “G” Battery in November 1914.
Born 1877 in Dumfries. Son of the late Hugh and Catherine Hume of Ellangowan Lodge, Dumfries. Husband of Jessie Hume of Kirkbrae, Markinch, Fife.
Killed in Action on 28 July 1917 and buried in Coxyde Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Markinch War Memorial.


PTE. CHARLES HUNT, S.R.
Charles Hunt – age 21 – Rifleman (1987 & 240280) 5th/6th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Charles was employed at Motherwell Steel Works and was a member of the local Territorials when he was mobilised in August 1914. He went to France with the 1/6th Battalion in March 1915 and was wounded at Neuve Chapelle. It was 6 months before he could return to the front. He was wounded again in mid August 1917 and died in 13th General Hospital in Boulogne.
Born 1896 in Maxwelltown, Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Patrick and Mary Hunt of 75 High Street, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 29 August 1917 and buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, France.

He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in August 1914 as part of the original British Expeditionary Force. He was awarded the M.M. in January 1918 as 11183 Pte. J. J. Hunter, KOSB. (Maxwelltown)
Born 1894 in Dumfries. Son of John Welsh Hunter and of Isabella (Murdoch) Hunter of 37 Church Street, Maxwelltown.
Died on 12 February 1924 of tuberculosis in Lochmaben Hospital, Dumfriesshire.
Also named on the St. John's Church memorial in Dumfries.

Thomas was employed at the Arrol-Johnston Motor Works at Heathhall, Dumfries when he enlisted in early 1915. He went to Egypt in June 1917 and was killed at the River Auja near Jaffa.
Born 1893 in Dumfries. Son of Walter and Jane (McKnight) Hunter of 1 St. Michaels Buildings, Dumfries. Husband of Isabella (Pool) Hunter of 26 High Street, Dumfries, who he married in 1916 in Dumfries.

Killed in Action on 12 September 1915 and buried in Redoubt Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.

James Hutchison – age 34 – Private (1885) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James, of 46 Loreburn Street, Dumfries, was a clog maker when he enlisted in September 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915.
Born 1880 in Dumfries. Son of Samuel and Grace Hutchison. Husband of Jane Ann (Campbell) Hutchison of 81 Loreburn Street, Dumfries who he married in 1902 in Glasgow.
In 1901 James, a clog maker, born Dumfries was lodging in Dennistoun, Glasgow
Missing in Action on 13 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Dumfries.


CPL. BENJAMIN IRVING, R.S.
Benjamin Irving – age 34– Private (19807) 16th Battalion (2nd Edinburgh) Royal Scots.
Ben was a gardener at West Preston Street in Edinburgh when he enlisted there in December 1914.
He gave his age as 34 and named his mother, Helen of 35 English Street, Dumfries as his next of kin. He was posted to France in January 1916.
Born c.1880 in Dumfries. Son of Helen or Ellen (Irving) Kellochan and step-son of Alexander Kellochan of 35 English Street, Dumfries. Grandson of the late Benjamin Irving of 171 High Street, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 1 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Note: his half-brother Edward Kellochan also fell - See below.


PTE. JAMES IRVING, KOSB.
James Irving – age 41 – Private (1912) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James worked at the Rosefield Mills in Maxwelltown when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was wounded on 12 July 1915 and evacuated back to Scotland. He had been in the Old Mill Hospital in Aberdeen for about a month when he died.
Born 1874 in Lochmaben, Dumfriesshire. Son of the late Adam and Mary Ann Irving of Dumfries.
Brother of Miss Janet Irving of 10 Wallace Street, Dumfries.
Died of wounds on 22 August 1915 and buried in Dumfries (St. Michael's) Cemetery.


PTE. JOHN IRVING, H.L.I.

John Irving – age 33 – Private (25721 & 243514) 1/6th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
John had been a nurseryman in Dumfries when he enlisted, initially in the 12th HLI. He was reported missing on 27 August 1917 and then that he had been wounded but had died in a Prisoner of War camp. (About 250 prisoners of war were buried in the German and Anglo-German cemeteries in Jerusalem)
Born 1884 in Dumfries. Son of Janet (Irving) Henry and step-son of David Henry.
Brother of Agnes (Henry) Boyd of 87 Queensberry Street, Dumfries.
Died of wounds on 12 September 1917 and buried in Jerusalem War Cemetery, Israel.


PTE. ROBERT IRVING, KOSB.
Robert Irving – age 22 – Private (854) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was living in Buccleuch Street, Dumfries and was employed in the bookbinding department of the D&G Standard when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915.
Born 1894 in Howell, Kirkcudbright.
Son of the late Robert Irving and of Jane (Rutherford) Irving of Wigtown House, Crichton Royal Institution, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

David Blaylock Jardine – age 30 – Lance Corporal (559 & 252535) 1/6th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
David had been employed by the Glasgow and South Western Railway for 16 years and was a ticket collector at St Enoch Station in Glasgow when he enlisted in the 3/6th Battalion in December 1915. He was posted to the 1/6th in France in July 1916.
Born 1886 in Dumfries. Son of James and Agnes (Blaylock) Jardine of 15 Wallace Street, Dumfries. Husband of Helen McLay (Stevenson) Jardine of 21 Lilybank Street, Glasgow who he married in 1912 in Glasgow.
Killed in Action on 13 May 1917 and buried in Orchard Dump Cemetery, Arleux-en-Gohelle, France.
Also named on the St. Michael's Church memorial in Dumfries, on the Glasgow Roll of Honour and on the G&SW Railway Memorial now in Ayr Station.

Missing in Action on 18 September 1918 and named on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, France.
