David Jardine – age 43 – Private (1944) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
David had worked in the yarn store at Rosefield Mills in Maxwelltowns for over 20 years but when he enlisted in September 1915 he had been at the Ironhirst Peat Works for 2 years. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli on 4 June 1915.
Born 1872 in Urr Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Matthew and Janet (Henry) Jardine of 10 St. Michael's Buildings, Dumfries. Husband of Janet (Riddell) Jardine of 177 St Michael's Street, Dumfries who he married in 1898 in Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 13 June 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the St. Michael's Church memorial in Dumfries.


PTE. FRED. JARDINE, H.L.I.
Frederick Wilson Jardine – age 20 – Private (41812) 12th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Formerly Private (5454) 2nd King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Fred had worked at Troqueer Mills and then on munitions work at Dornock before enlisting in the KOSB. He had been in France for a year. A brother was missing at Gaza.
Born 1897 in Dumfries. Son of Robert and Janet Jardine of 113 St. Michael's Street, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 6 December 1917 and buried in Level Crossing Cemetery, Fampoux, France.

William Jardine – age 20 – Private (4578 & 241214) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was a warehouseman at Rosefield Mills in Maxwelltown when he enlisted in January 1916.
Born 1896 in Dumfries. Son of Robert H. and Janet Jardine of 113 St. Michael's Street, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 19 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.


PTE. JAMES JARDINE, KOSB.
I cannot identify this man.
The D&G Standard of 20/3/18 p.2 reported that Mr James Jardine of 168 St. Michael's Street, Dumfries, eldest son Signaller James Jardine, KOSB had been wounded in France and was in hospital in London. He was 29 years old and a clog sole maker, and had enlisted 3 months ago.
However I cannot find any other mention of him
.


PTE. J. J. JARDINE, CANADA.
John James Jardine – age 28 – Private (127016) 1st Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
John had been a member of the Salvation Army Corps in Dumfries and had worked in the Rosefield Mills in Maxwelltown before he emigrated to Canada in 1913. He was working as a weaver when he enlisted in October 1915 in Hespeler, Ontario and had been at the front for just two weeks when he was fatally wounded. He died in the 30th Casualty Clearing Station.
Born 1888 in Dumfries. Son of Alexander Young Jardine and Margaret Rae Jardine of 37 Queen Street, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 3 May 1917 and buried in Aubigny Communal Cemetery Extension, France.

John Jardine – age 31 – Lance Sergeant (295990) 12th (Ayr and Lanark Yeomanry) Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
John had been a postman in Dumfries since 1904 when he enlisted in the 1/1st Lanarkshire Yeomanry and as Corporal (2141) he landed with his battalion, as dismounted troops, at Gallipoli in October 1915. He was transferred to the 12th RSF in Egypt and served in Palestine (Gaza and Jerusalem)
Born 1886 at Lochrutton. Son of the late John Jardine of Lochfoot, Lochrutton and of Anne (Boyd) Jardine of 7 Balmoral Road, Greenbrae, Dumfries.
In 1901 John, age 14, was a Telegraph Messenger and was living with his family in Maxwelltown.
Husband of Margaret (Hamilton) Jardine who he married in 1913 in Torthorwald, Dumfriesshire.
Missing in Action on 8 December 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
Also named on the Lochrutton Parish War Memorial, on the Torthorwald Parish War Memorial in Collin Village, on the Dumfries Post Office Memorial and on the St. Mary's Church Memorial in Dumfries.


PTE. ROBERT JARDINE, KOSB.
Robert Jardine – age 23 – Private (12172) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was working on Poundland Farm, Dunscore, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion in France in May 1915.
Born 1892 in Dumfries. Son of Robert and Agnes Jardine of 165 Lockerbie Road, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the St. Michael's Church memorial in Dumfries and on the Dunscore War Memorial.


PTE. WILLIAM JARDINE, CAMERON H.
William Jardine – age 20 – Private (S/18349) 5th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Educated at Noblehill School in Dumfries, William was working as a sugar boiler in the Pleasance Preserve Works in Dumfries when he enlisted in May 1915. He joined his battalion in France in October 1915 but was fatally wounded and died in the 45th Casualty Clearing Station.
Born c.1896 in Dumfries. Son of the late Agnes (McAllister) Jardine and of William Jardine of Rose Bush Cottage, Isle of Man Moss, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 26 October 1916 and buried in Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.

PTE. JOHN JOHNSTON, KOSB.
John Johnston – age 43 – Private (1917) “B” Company, 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was employed at Rosefield Mills in Maxwelltown when he enlisted in September 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 where he was wounded and contracted enteric fever. He was evacuated to hospital in Malta before being invalided to the UK for further hospital treatment. It was June 1916 before he was fit to return to active service but while at Catterick Camp in Yorkshire he suffered appendicitis from which he died in Greenbank Hospital at Darlington, County Durham.
Born 1873 in Dumfries. Son of Robert and Elizabeth Johnston. Husband of Janet (Saunders) Johnston of 185 St. Michael Street, Dumfries who he married in 1892 in Dumfries.
Died on Active Service on 16 July 1916 and buried in Dumfries (St. Michael's) Cemetery.


PTE. ALAN JOHNSTONE, R.S.
Allan Johnston – age 21 – Private (30247) 15th Battalion (1st Edinburgh) Royal Scots.
Educated at Noblehill School in Dumfries, Allan was employed as a dairyman at Mouswald Grange, Ruthwell, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted in February 1916. He joined his battalion in France in July 1916.
Born 1895 in Tinwald, Dumfriesshire. Son of Malcolm and Jemima (Kirkpatrick) Johnston of "Allansfield," Annan Road, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 31 March 1917 and buried in St. Nicolas British Cemetery, Arras, France.

James Johnston, Military Medal – age 32 – Sergeant (2253 & 285422) Queen's Own Oxfordshire Hussars. (1/1st Oxfordshire Yeomanry)
James had served an apprenticeship with a horse trainer and had worked as a stud groom at Nunthorpe Hall in Yorkshire before he emigrated to America. He returned to enlist in October 1914 and went to France in 1916. He was awarded the M.M. as 285422 Sjt. J: Johnston, Yeo.
Born 1885 in Dumfries. Son of the late William and Janet Johnston of Dumfries. Brother of William Johnston of Sidney Place, Annan Road, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 15 April 1918 and buried in St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France.

John Douglas Johnston – age 28 – Lance Corporal (6360) 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards.
Educated at Noblehill School in Dumfries, John was a reservist who had spent 8 years in the Scots Guards. He was living with his brother Joseph at 180 Bedlay Street, Springburn, Glasgow when he was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Zeebrugge in October 1914.
Born 1886 in Dumfries. Son of the late Thomas Gillison Johnston of Dumfries and of Janet (Douglas) Johnston of 73 Albert Street, Townhead, Glasgow.
Killed in Action on 18 December 1914 and buried in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, France. Also named on the Glasgow Roll of Honour.

Educated at Noblehill School in Dumfries, Joseph was working in the Barr & Stroud Factory in Anniesland, Glasgow when he enlisted in September 1914. Although a reservist with the KOSB he joined the HLI. He landed with his battalion at Bolougne in November 1915.
Born 1883 in Dumfries. Son of the late Thomas Gillison Johnston of Dumfries and of Janet (Douglas) Johnston of 73 Albert Street, Townhead, Glasgow. Husband of Mary Eleanor (Cooper) Johnston of 180 Bedley Street, Springburn, Glasgow (later Mrs Gilmartin) who he married in 1912 in Edinburgh .
Killed in Action on 30 June 1916 and buried in Bouzincourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.
Also named on the Glasgow Roll of Honour and on the Barr &Stroud Company memorial now at Thales Optronics, Linthouse Road, Glasgow.

William Gibson Johnstone – age 19 – Private (235367) 1st Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Formerly Private (4443) KOSB.
William enlisted in the KOSB but was posted to the 2nd and then 1st Cameronians.
Born 1899 in Dumfries.
Son of James Duff Johnstone and of Helen (Gibson) Johnstone of 74 English Street, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 21 September 1918 and buried in Meath Cemetery, Villers-Guislain, France.


GUNNR. W. J. JOHNSTONE, R.F.A.
William James Johnstone – age 24 – Gunner (192571) “D” Battery, 317th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
William was an assistant draper with the Dumfries & Maxwelltown Co-operative Society when he enlisted in 1916.
Born 1893 in Dumfries. Son of John and Margaret Gordon Johnstone of Johnston Place, Rosevale Street, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 8 November 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Dumfries.

PTE. E. KELLACHAN, KOSB.
Edward Kellachan – age ?? – Private (11306) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Edward was a house painter in Dumfries when he enlisted in October 1895 as Private (5466) He served initially with the 1st KOSB before he transferred to 2nd KOSB in February 1898 and was in India until December 1903 when, his time expired, he was transferred to the Army Reserve. He was discharged from the army in October 1911. He re-joined his old battalion in France in November 1914.
Born c.1870 to 1878 in Dumfries. Son of Edward and Ann Kellochan.

William Kelly – age 25 – Private (S/43224) 4th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders transferred as Private (690507) to 257th Area Employment Company, Labour Corps.
Note: His Medal Card has 20705 Seaforth Highlanders and 690507 Labour Corps.
William, of 46 English Street, Dumfries was a Railway Porter and was a Private in the 2nd Seaforths when he married in 1917.
Born 1895 in Dumfries. Son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Lockerbie) Kelly. Husband of Gertrude Sylvester (McLelland) Kelly who he married in 1917 in St John's, Dumfries.
Died on Service on 21 July 1920 and buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery, Germany.
Also named on the St John's Episcopal Church memorial in Dumfries.


PTE. JAMES KENNEDY, KOSB.
James McGill Kennedy – age 28 – Private (26888) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James served with the 2nd, 6th and 1st Battalions of the KOSB. He died as a Prisoner of War in a German hospital near Lille.
Born 1890 in Dumfries. Son of William and Mary (McGill) Kennedy of Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 23 July 1918 and buried in Tourcoing (Pont-Neuville) Communal Cemetery, France.

James Kennedy – age 20 – Private (S/3364) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Educated at Noblehill School in Dumfries, James was employed with Messrs R. Barbour and Sons, drapers, Dumfries, and later with Messrs Allan and Inglis, drapers, Glasgow. He enlisted from there in August 1914 and joined his battalion in France in the December. He was fatally wounded on 19 May 1915 and died in hospital.
Born 1894 in Polton, Lasswade, Midlothian. Son of Francis Robert and Mary Kennedy of 3 Greenbrae Buildings, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 20 May 1915 and buried in Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Also named on the Glasgow Roll of Honour.


PTE. THOMAS J. KERR, R.FUS.
Thomas John Redmond Kerr – age 25 – Private (65953) 2nd Battalion, Royal Fusiliers.
Formerly Private (30500) Norfolk Regiment.
Thomas was a baker in Dumfries when he enlisted in October 1915, initially in the Army Service Corps. He went to France in May 1917 to join the Norfolk Regiment before being posted to the Royal Fusiliers in June 1917.
Born 1891 in Dumfries. Son of James Neilson Kerr and of Margaret (Stewart) Kerr of "Strowan," Park Road, Maxwelltown, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 1 December 1917 and named on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, France.
Also named on the Greyfriars Church memorial in Dumfries.


LIEUT. W. N. KERR, LONDON REG.
William Niven Kerr – age 24 – Second Lieutenant: 1/19th Battalion (St. Pancras), London Regiment.
Formerly Private (4328 & 331555) 1/9th (Glasgow Highlanders) Highland Light Infantry.
William had served his apprenticeship with the Maypole Dairy Company in Dumfries and was working in the Ayr branch when he enlisted in the HLI in 1914. He joined his battalion in France in March 1916. He was commissioned in the London Regiment in September 1917 and survived the war only to die of influenza at the 13th Casualty Clearing Station in Ascq, near Lille.
Born 1894 in Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of the late Mary Kerr and of William Niven Kerr of Radville, Saskatchewan, Canada. Brother of Mrs Mary Jane Law of Maxwelltown, Dumfries.
Died on Service on 26 November 1918 and buried in Ascq Communal Cemetery, France.

William Kerr – age 19 – Private (18079) 5th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Educated at Noblehill School in Dumfries, William was a clerk in the Dumfries parcel office of the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company when he enlisted in May 1915. He joined his battalion in France in August but was wounded at the Battle of Loos on 25 September 1915 and died in the 20th General Hospital at Camiers, near Etaples.
Born 1896 in Dumfries. Son of Thomas and Janet (Rutherford) Kerr of 6 Balmoral Road, Greenbrae, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 3 October 1915 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the G&SW Railway Memorial now in Ayr Station.


PTE. JOSEPH KINSTRY, KOSB.
Joseph Kingstrey – age 29 – Private (130162) 63rd Battalion, Machine Gun Corps.
Formerly Private (32554) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Joseph was reported missing on 23 March 1918 and later that he had died of his wounds and pneumonia while a prisoner of war. He was originally buried in Geissen Military Cemetery in Hesse but was re-interred in December 1923.
Born 1888 in Dumfries. (Birth Register indexed as Kingstree)
Son of Alexander and Bridget Kingstree of Dumfries. Husband of Mary (Foley) Kingstrey of 7½ St. Andrew's Street, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 3 April 1918 and buried in Niederzwehren Cemetery, Kassel, Germany.


PTE. J. J. KIRKPATRICK, D.C.M. KOSB.
James Jardine Kirkpatrick, Distinguished Conduct Medal – age 36 – Corporal (9246 & 201607) King's Own Scottish Borderers Depot.
James was serving as Private (6738) with the 1st Battalion, KOSB in India when war was declared. He took part in the initial landings at Cape Helles, Gallipoli in April 1915.
He later transferred to the 1/5th Battalion and was awarded the DCM in 1917 as 201607 L./Cpl. J. J. Kirkpatrick, K.O.S.B.
"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When he saw that no officers or N.C.O.'s were left, he rallied all the men he could, and led them in a charge on an enemy redoubt, which he captured. He also volunteered three times to carry messages from the redoubt to the advancing troops at great personal risk".
Born 1882 in Lockerbie, Dryfesdale, Dumfriesshire.
Son of the late William and Janet (Wilson) Kirkpatrick. Husband of Elizabeth Cunningham (Kirk) Kirkpatrick of 21 High Street, Dumfries who he married in 1916 in Dumfries while a Private in the 1st KOSB.
Died on 30 March 1919 of “natural causes” at home in Dumfries, and buried in Dumfries (St. Michael's) Cemetery.


PTE. JAMES KIRKPATRICK, KOSB.
James Kirkpatrick – age 24 – Private (4287 & 241038) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was a carver with a granite merchant in Dumfries when he enlisted in May 1915. He joined his battalion at Gallipoli in September 1915 and then served in Egypt and Palestine.
Born 1894 in Dunscore, Dumfriesshire.
Son of the late Jane Kirkpatrick and of James Kirkpatrick of 92 Lockerbie Road, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 13 November 1917 and buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel.
Also named on the Townhead Church memorial now in St. Michael's Church in Dumfries.

John Bell Kirkpatrick – age 29 – Private (38203) 14th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Born 1888 in Dumfries. Son of the late John Kirkpatrick and of Mary (Bell) Kirkpatrick of 16 Brewery Street, Dumfries. Husband of Barbara (Brennan) Kirkpatrick of 13 Friars Vennel, Dumfries who he married in 1911 in Dumfries.

Thomas Edwards Laurie – age 20 – Lance Corporal (6358 & 333088) 1/9th (Glasgow Highlanders) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Thomas worked in his father's live-stock auctioneers business. He enlisted in the Lanarkshire Yeomanry in 1916 and was posted to the HLI in the November.
Born 1897 in Dumfries. Son of James and Robina Laurie of "Hollyhurst," Annan Road, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Dumfries Academy Memorial, on an individual memorial in St. Mary's Church in Dumfries and on the church memorial.


CPL. WILLIAM LAURIE, CANADA.
William Laurie – age 27 – Corporal (405570) 38th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
William had been in Canada since 1912 and was working as a Commercial Traveller when he enlisted in April 1915 in Toronto, Ontario. He was a Sergeant/Instructor in England for 2 years before going to France in April 1918.
Born 1891 in Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of the late William Laurie and of Jessie Ann (Brown) Laurie of 2 Church Place, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 10 August 1918 and named on the Vimy Memorial, France.
Also named on the Dumfries Academy Memorial and on the St. Michael's Church memorial in Dumfries.


C.S.M.. JAMES LAWRIE, KOSB.

James Laurie – age 42 – Company Sergeant Major (7877) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James had attended the Dumfries and Maxwelltown Industrial School. He enlisted, aged 16 years and 6 months, as a boy musician in the 1st KOSB in June1891. He served in the South African War and was discharged in December 1913 as Sergeant (3694) after 22 years and 6 months service.
He and his wife and family were living in Benwell, Newcastle-on-Tyne when he re-enlisted in 1914. He was Mentioned in Despatches in December 1915 as Laurie, No. 7877 Company-Sergeant-Major J. (killed).
Born 1876 in Dumfries. Son of the late James Laurie and of Eliza (Laurie) Laurie. Husband of Euphemia Kennedy (Henderson) Laurie of Pleasance Cottage, Annan Road, Dumfries who he married in 1904 in Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Dumfries.

Frederick James Lee – age 21 – Lance Corporal (77220) 22nd Air Line Section, 2nd Indian Army Corps Signal Company, Royal Engineers.
Fred had served his apprentice ship as a motor mechanic at Penman's Queensberry Motor Works in Dumfries. He was working in Glasgow, and living at 44 Westend Park Street, when in March 1914, he enlisted in the Territorial Force as Sapper (9053) in the Scottish Airline Signalling Company, Royal Engineers. In April 1915 he re-enlisted in the Regular Army at Hitchen, Hertfordshire as Driver (77220) Royal Engineers and went out to Egypt in August 1915. James Leslie – age 26 – Private (9657) “C” Company, 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1911 James was serving with the 1st KOSB in India. He landed with the 2nd battalion at Le Havre on 15 August 1914 and was killed near Ypres.
Born 1888 in Annan, Dumfriesshire. Son of William and Janet Leslie of 13 Friars Vennel, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 14 January 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.


PTE. JAMES BRANNEY LINDEN, KOSB.
James Branney Linden – age 20 – Private (2119 & 240743) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was an apprentice sculptor at a granite works in Dumfries when he enlisted.
Born 1896 in Dumfries. Son of William John and Susan (Branney) Linden of 2 Newall Terrace, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 19 April 1917 and buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine.


The D&G Standard of 1/9/1915 p.2 reported that the late Robert Little, slater and chimney sweep had 4 sons serving in the army. Robert & John in the Black Watch, William in the RAMC and Charles in the 1st KOSB – and a son-in-law Roger Murray (see below) also in the 1st KOSB.

Charles Wilson Little – age 28 – Private (6407) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Charles was a chimney sweep in Kilmarnock when he enlisted in August 1914. He joined his battalion at Gallipoli in August 1915, and then served in Egypt and France.
Born 1889 in Dumfries. Son of the late Robert and Janet (McKinnell) Little of Dumfries. Husband of Mary (Wilson or Haynes) Little of 35 High Street, Kilmarnock (later Mrs Revill of 2 County Cottages, County Street, Bath Road, Bristol) who he married in 1912 in Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 26 February 1917 and buried in Guillemont Road Cemetery, Guillemont, Somme, France.

Stewart worked in the munitions factory at Gretna until he enlisted in 1916.
Born 1897 in Maxwelltown, Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of James Cook Lockerbie and of Sarah (Kerr) Lockerbie of 46 English Street, Dumfries and of The Bow, West Morton Street, Thornhill, Dumfriesshire.

William Lockerbie – age 29 – Private (14295) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Educated at St. John's School in Dumfries, William was a porter with the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company at Ardrossan Station when he enlisted in August 1914, initially in the Black Watch. He transferred to the 8th KOSB before they went to France in July 1915.
Born 1887 in Dumfries. Son of William and Agnes Lockerbie of 177 St. Michael's Street, Dumfries. Husband of Alice McCardle (Palmer) Lockerbie of 160 St. Michael's Street who he married in 1909 in Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 17 August 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

Robert had been employed by J Maxwell and Son, Printers and Publishers of Dumfries before he moved to a stationery company in Newcastle. He enlisted from there in November 1914 in the Northumberland Fusiliers but transferred to the KOSB in January 1915 and landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May.
Born 1893 in Dumfries, as Robert Alexander Henderson.
Son of Mary Nicholson (Henderson) Lomas (later Mrs. James McGeorge) of 26 High Street, Dumfries, and step-son the late William Lomas.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.

John Malcolm – age 19 – Private (48077) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
John enlisted in September 1917 and went to France in April 1918. He was fatally wounded and died in the 3rd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station in Frevent.
Born 1899 in Dumfries. Son of Mary Oliver Malcolm of Auchenrivock, Canonbie, Dumfriesshire, and the late William Malcolm.
Died of Wounds on 23 August 1918 and buried in St. Hilaire Cemetery Extension, Frevent, France.

Robert Malcolm – age 19 – Private (32512) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was employed as a cabinetmaker when he enlisted in July 1917. He had been in France for three months, and in the front line for just two days, when he was killed.

PIPER ARCH. M. MAXWELL, KOSB.
Archibald Milligan Maxwell – age 18 – Private (51454) 15th Battalion (1st Edinburgh) Royal Scots.
Archibald had enlisted in the KOSB in March 1916 but was too young to serve overseas. As he approached his 18th birthday (17years and 310days) in March 1917 he attested again and in June was mobilised as Private (13265) in the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) He was posted to the 3rd Reserve battalion in December (as Private 38739) and then to the 1st Battalion in France at the end of March 1918. However on arrival he was transferred again, to the 15th Royal Scots, and less than two weeks later he was fatally wounded.
Born 1899 in Kilwinning, Ayrshire. Son of David Johnstone Maxwell and of Williamina (Neisham) Maxwell of Loreburn Street, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 12 April 1918 and buried in Le Grand Beaumart British Cemetery, Steenwerck, France. Also named on the St. Michael's Church memorial in Dumfries.

2nd LT. R. GORDON MILLAR, A.&S.H.
Robert Gordon Millar – age 33 – Second Lieutenant: 4th Battalion attached to 11th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Robert was the minister at St. Mary's Church in Dumfries when he was commissioned in August 1916. He had been educated at Arbroath High School and joined the Post Office in Dundee before going on to St. Andrew's University where he graduated M.A. in 1913. He was wounded on 23 April 1917 at Rouex near Arras and died in the Duchess of Westminster Hospital in Le Touquet.
Born 1883 in Arbroath, Angus. Son of the late Alexander Millar and of Mary (Lowe) Millar of Ancrum Road, Dundee. Husband of Katherine Grace H. (Rigold) Millar of Dumfries who he married in 1916 in Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 11 May 1917 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.

SEGT. ERNEST MILLER, CANADA.
Ernest Miller – age 29 – Sergeant (463644) 3rd Battalion, Canadian Pioneers.
Ernest served his apprenticeship as an engineer at the Barclay Curle Works in Glasgow. When he qualified he worked as an engineer in a gold mine in West Africa before moving to Montreal. He eventually joined the Canadian Pacific Railway and was in Vancouver in August 1914 where he was a member of a militia unit, the 6th Duke of Connaught's Own Riflles. He enlisted for overseas service in July 1915 at Vernon in British Columbia.
Born 1887 in Dumfries. Son of Joseph and Elizabeth Miller of Glenkilm, Lockerbie Road, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 13 June 1916 and buried in Menin Road South Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Dumfries Academy Memorial and on the St. Michael's Church memorial in Dumfries.


2nd LT. WALTER MILLER, A.&S.H.
Walter Miller – age 21 – Second Lieutenant: 11th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Formerly Private (2194) Lanarkshire Yeomanry.
Walter was a member of the clerical staff in the Granton Timber Company in Dumfries when he was mobilised in August 1914. He was commissioned in the Argylls a year later. He died in the General Hospital in Dannes-Camiers.
Born 1895 in Dumfries. Son of James and Eliza Miller of 59 English Street, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 30 April 1917 and Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Dumfries Academy Memorial.


SERGT. WILLIAM MILLER, KOSB. {same man} PTE. W. L. McALLISTER MILLER, KOSB.
William Lee McAllister Miller – age 40 – Corporal (16337) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Sergeant W. L. Miller was an “old Volunteer” who enlisted in the 9th Reserve Battalion of the KOSB in September 1914 and earned rapid promotion. He worked as a picture-framer and was a well known local footballer and latterly a referee, as well as a member of the Young Men's Society of St. Andrew's Roman Catholic Church. He was drowned when the Troopship “Royal Edward” was torpedoed and sunk by UB-14 in the Aegean.
Born 1875 in Dumfries. Son of John and Catherine Miller of 5 Nith Street, Dumfries. Husband of Margaret (Ward) Miller of 73 Queen Street, Dumfries who he married in 1903 in Dumfries.
Killed by Enemy Action/Lost at Sea on 13 August 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
His brother, Thomas Riley Miller of the 9th Cheshire Regiment, was killed in France on 29/10/1915.

David had worked as a printer in Dumfries before he moved to New Zealand in 1913 as the representative of a London company. He enlisted in October 1915 at Trentham Camp, near Wellington and sailed from there in February 1916.

Frank was a tailor in Dumfries when, as a Territorial, he was mobilised in August 1914. He served as an Instructor and finally went to France in the summer of 1918.
Born 1891 in Dumfries. Son of Francis and Lucy (Kerr) Mitchell of 76 Queensberry Street, Dumfries. Husband of Janet (MacAuley) Mitchell of 15 Irish Street and of 96 Whitesands, Dumfries who he married in 1912 in Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 4 October 1918 and buried in Philosophe British Cemetery, Mazingarbe, France.

Henry Kerr Mitchell – age 21 – Private (78796) Middlesex Regiment, transferred as Private (153401) to the 337th Works Company, Labour Corps.
Henry had been a member of the Territorials with the KOSB but had never been passed as fit for front line service. He served in the UK with the KOSB, the Middlesex Regiment and the Labour Corps where he finally gained the fitness standard required. He had just been transferred to the Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment) when he was taken ill. He died of pneumonia in the Fort Pitt Military Hospital at Chatham, Kent.
Born 1897 in Dumfries. Son of Francis and Lucy (Kerr) Mitchell of 76 Queensberry Street, Dumfries. Husband of Susan (McGregor) Mitchell, of 95 Gibson Terrace, Edinburgh who he married in 1915 in Edinburgh.
Died on Service on 18 November 1918 and buried in Dumfries (St. Michael's) Cemetery.

James Montgomery – age 20 – Private (241104) 4th (Reserve) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was employed at the Ironhirst Peat Works when he enlisted. He was in training when he was taken ill and he died at Hawick Military Hospital, Roxburghshire.
Born 1897 in Dumfries. Son of Samuel and Helen (Thomson) Montgomery of 32 Brewery Street, Dumfries.
Died on Service on 23 September 1917 abd buried in Troqueer Cemetery, Dumfries.
Note: James is buried with his father who also died on service.
Samuel Montgomery – age 60 – Private (13770) Royal Defence Corps. Died 8 December 1920. At the time of his son's death he had been serving with the RDC at Leith Docks for over 2 years.

Norman Stevenson Montgomery – age 21 – Second Lieutenant: 2nd Battalion, Coldstream Guards. Norman was an accomplished pianist and was First Violin in the Dumfries Amateur Orchestra. He had served his apprenticeship at the National Bank in Dumfries and had taken a position with the Honk Kong and Shanghai Bank in London from where he joined the Artists' Rifles Officer Training Corps. He was commissioned in October 1915 and went to France in February 1916.
Born 1895 in Dumfries. Son of John Sorley Montgomery and Annie Montgomery of Octavia House, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 17 June 1916 and buried in Essex Farm Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Dumfries Academy Memorial and on the St George's Church memorial in Dumfries.


PTE. HENRY MORIARTY, A.&S.H.
Henry James Moriarty – age 33 – Private (201815) 1/7th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Henry had worked as a compositor at the Dumfries & Galloway Standard before he moved to Airdrie in 1912. He enlisted there in 1916 and had been in France for about a year when he was killed.
Born 1885 in Dunscore, Dumfriesshire. Son of Thomas and Mary Moriarty of Dumfries. Husband of Mary (Holmes) Moriarty of 32 North Bridge Street, Airdrie and of 69 Shakespeare Street, Dumfries who he married in 1910 in Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 13 October 1918 and buried in Auberchicourt British Cemetery, France.

George Morrison – age 23 – Private (25561) 17th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Although his parents lived in Liverpool, George was brought up by his grandmother Elizabeth Watson of 81 Loreburn Street, Dumfries. When he enlisted in June 1915 he was employed by a chemist at his aerated works in Brewery Street. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre in January 1916.
Born 1893 in Dumfries. Son of Peter Stewart Morrison and Elizabeth Morrison of 29 Hogarth Road, Kirkdale, Liverpool.
Killed in Action on 25 October 1916 and buried in Faubourg d'Amiens Cemetery, Arras, France.


LIEUT. ANDREW MUIR, S.R.
Andrew Muir – age 28 – Lieutenant: 1/7th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Andrew was a teacher in Glasgow, latterly at Hutchesons' Boys Grammer School. He had started teacher training in 1906 at the Glasgow Training College (now Jordanhill College of Education) and in 1914 he was studying for an M.A. at Glasgow University. He was the organist and choirmaster at the Milngavie and Baldernock United Free Church. Andrew was commissioned in November 1914 and joined the 1/7th Cameronians at Gallipoli in October 1915.
Born 1887 in Dumfries. Twin son (with Robert) of John and Mary Muir of Chrystal Place, Dumfries.

After he recovered he was posted to the 6th KOSB in France in June 1917.

John Muirhead – age 45 – First Engineer: S.S. "Clan Murray" (Glasgow) Mercantile Marine.
The “Clan Murray” was inbound from Australia to Belfast with a cargo of wheat when she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine UC 55 off the south coast of Ireland.
Born 1871 in Dumfries. Son of Mary (Allan) Muirhead and the late Hugh Muirhead of Dumfries. Husband of Jane Bertram (Donaldson) Muirhead of Redburn, Canal Avenue, Johnstone, Renfrewshire who he married in 1906 in Johnstone.
Killed by Enemy Action/Lost at Sea on 29 May 1917 and named on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.

PTE. JAMES MULHEARN, A.&S.H.
James Mulhearn – age 20 – Private (301797) 2nd Battalion. Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
James was an apprentice at Rosefield Mills in Maxwelltown when he enlisted in the 2/8th Argylls in May 1916. He was posted to the 14th Battalion in France in September 1917 and transferred to the 2nd Battalion in June 1918.
Born 1898 in Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Margaret Mulhearn of 8 Queensberry Street, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 22 September 1918 and buried in Villers Hill British Cemetery, Villers-Guislain, France.


PTE. F. MULHOLLAND, GORDON H.
Francis Mulholland – age 29 – Private (S/3533) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Francis first joined the army at the age of 14 and served in the South African War with the KOSB. He was employed at the Pioneer Rubber Company in Manchester when he re-enlisted.
Born 1887 in Dumfries. Son of the late John and Catherine Mulholland of St. Michael's Street, Dumfries. Husband of Mary Jane (Edwards) Mulholland) of Oldham, Lancashire who he married in 1910 in Kensington, London.
Missing in Action on 13 November 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


PTE. H. MULLONEY, Y.& L.R.
All records spell the name as Mullaney.
Herbert Mullaney – age 22 – Private (24314) 8th Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment.
Herbert was a plasterer like his father and the family were living in Rotherham, Yorkshire when he enlisted in December 1915. He was posted to his battalion in France in June 1916 but only days later he was wounded on the first day of the Battle of the Somme on 1 July 1916.
Born 1894 in Dumfries. Son of James and Margaret (Herries) Mullaney of 166 Melrose Terrace, Middle Lane, Rotherham.
Died of Wounds on 3 July 1916 and buried in Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-l'Abbe, France.


PTE. DANIEL MULLOY, KOSB.
Daniel Mulloy – age 37 – Private (7869) 1st Battalion, Royal Scot Fusiliers.
Daniel had previously served in the South African War with the KOSB. He enlisted in the RSF in August 1914 and was seriously wounded in September 1915 at the Battle of Loos. He was discharged from the army in April 1916 and awarded a Silver War Badge (No.505018). He died of an epileptic seizure, resulting from his wounds, at the Cottage Hospital in Kirkcudbright.
Born 1879 in Dumfries. Son of the late Hugh Mulloy and of Bridget (Martin) Mulloy of 40 Friars Vennel, Dumfries.
Died on 17 August 1916 and buried in Holy Cross cemetery, Dumfries.
Named on the United Kingdom Book Of Remembrance.

PTE. JAMES E. MUNDELL, KOSB.
James Edgar Mundell – age 19 – Private (1066) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was an apprentice jeweller in Dumfries when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but contracted dysentery and died onboard the Hospital ship “Sicilia” en route from Gallipoli to Malta.
Born 1896 in Penpont, Dumfriesshire. Son of James Bald Mundell and Mary Ann (Edgar) Mundell of Nunfield, Edinburgh Road, Dumfries.
Died on Active Service and buried at Sea on 26 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Greyfriars Church memorial and on the St. Michael's Church memorial, both in Dumfries.


L-CPL J. MURDOCH, KOSB.
John Murdoch – age 22 – Lance Corporal (12114) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was employed in the Troqueer Mills when he enlisted in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Bolougne in May 1915.
Born 1892 in Dumfries. Son of Joseph and Helen (Coupland) Murdoch of 50 Irish Street, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 8 August 1915 and buried in Le Touret Military Cemetery, Richebourg-l'Avoue, France.


SERGT. D. M. MURRAY, M.M., S.R.
David Martin Murray, Military Medal – age 20 – Sergeant (40888) 9th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) Formerly Private (1367) Lanarkshire Yeomanry. (Source:SDGW)
David was working in the National Bank in Dumfries when he enlisted in March 1915 in the Lanarkshire Yeomanry. He was posted to the 9th Scottish Rifles and was awarded the M.M. in 1917 as 40888 Lance Corporal D. M. Murray, Sco. Rif.
Born 1897 in Dunscore, Dumfriesshire. Son of James and Margaret Murray of 98 Broom's Road, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 22 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Dumfries Academy Memorial and on the St Mary's Church memorial in Dumfries.


SERGT. JAMES MURRAY, KOSB
James Murray – age 38 – Sergeant (4654) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James enlisted in the KOSB in 1893 when he was 18 and had served his term of 21 years when he was killed at La Bassee. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre on 15 August 1914.
Born 1875 in Stranraer, Wigtownshire. Son of Thomas and Mary Ann Murray of Friars Vennel, Dumfries. Brother of John of Old Bridge Street, Maxwelltown, who was a hairdresser in Friars Vennel, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 18 October 1914 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
