Good evening,

May I offer a bit further concerning P/M W.G.K. Mackie? There seemed to have been a question about his relationship to Dumfries. According to a news article I had read, his parents lived on Edinburgh Road, Dumfries. Perhaps this is your answer.

He had originally enlisted in the Seaforths at age 15 in 1901, eventually transferring to the 3rd K.O.S.B. and finally transferred to the 2nd Battalion in France. You may not have been aware of it but he was also awarded the "Silberne Medaille de St. Ernest" in 1910. And being a competitive Piper, he won the prestigious Gold Medal for piobaireachd at the Northern Meeting in 1909. Quite an achievement and exciting career.

Hopeful that some of this will be of interest.

11537 Sjt.-Piper Mackie, W. C. K., 2nd Bn. (Edinburgh)

Don't know of any Dumfries connection.

For Robert McGuffog, the SNWM has him as Staff Sergeant and born Kirkcudbrightshire.

Great information Dick, thanks very much. It all helps to turn these names into real people for those who look into the memorials.

The name of Bdr Stephen Gilbert has been added to the memorial.

I also noticed that significant work has been done around the memorial so that people attending a service at the memorial do not have to stand in the road.

Good evening Paul,

Thank you for replying to my note regarding a Piper from Dumfries. I have another concern, about a Piper from Daliburgh but a bit hesitent to mention it; being so far from the source, and doubtful about how it might be taken. But I would like to see this Piper get his due.

Kenneth MacLeod was from Daliburgh and enlisted in the Cameron Highlanders in March of 1911 at the age of 17. He served in France with the 1st Battalion, having previously served with the 3rd (Special Reserve). Having been woumded at Mons, he was invalided home. On release from the hospital, he served as a Piper at the depot. He was taken ill and died at the Invergarry Sanatorium where he died on the 30th July, 1918 and was buried with Military Honours at the Kilchulman Burial Ground.

However, his name on the South Uist Memorial appears to be in error.; "Pioneer Kenneth MacLeod, 1st Camerons." I doubt that there had been a 'Pioneer' (Sergeant) MacLeod with the Battalion. This error, if in fact it is, may be quite understandable if the engraver had only the rank as "Pr." to refer to. It's happened before.

I hope that this note will not be taken as critical.

This last post does not relate to Dumfries. It relates to South Uist and it should be answered here:

It's surprising to me that so few names are duplicated on Dumfries and Max/Troqueer.

Maybe before the burghs merged in 1929 people felt an affinity with one community rather than the other.
Or maybe the "highheidyins" made them chose?

He is listed on the Dumfries, Kirkgunzeon and New Abbey War Memorials and the family grave is in New Abbey.
