STOKER JOHN SHANKS, R.N.
John Shanks – age 23 – Stoker 1st Class (K/27968) H.M.S. Hampshire, Royal Navy.
Educated at Noblehill School in Dumfries, John was a signalman with the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company at Irvine in Ayrshire when he enlisted in the navy in 1915. He served at the Battle of Jutland but was lost when the “Hampshire” hit a mine off Orkney while en route to Russia with Lord Kitchener as a passenger.
Born 1893 in Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire as John Jardine.
Son of Private James Shanks of the 2/5th KOSB and Jane (Jardine) Shanks of Jardine Buildings, Noblehill, Dumfries.
Missing in Action/Lost at Sea on 5 June 1916 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.
Also named on the Irvine War Memorial and on the G&SW Railway Memorial now in Ayr Station.


LIEUT. J. P. SHANNON, RIFLE B.
John Paterson Shannon – age 34 – Second Lieutenant: 12th Battalion, Rifle Brigade.
Formerly Private (29820) 1st King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was a meat inspector and slaughter house superintendent to Dumfries Council as well as a qualified sanitary inspector. He had joined the 3rd KOSB in 1903 and rose to the rank of Sergeant with the Territorial 5th KOSB. He was discharged as time-expired in March 1916. However he remained a reservist and was mobilised in the October 1916 as Private (5627) but was reinstated as a Sergeant before he went to France to join the 1st KOSB in January 1917. In June 1917 John was sent to Newton Ferres in Devon as Sergeant (29820) for Officer training and was commissioned in September 1917. He survived the war but died of influenza and pneumonia at home at Noblehill Farm.
Born 1885 in Dumfries. Son of the late Robert Shannon and of Mary Agnes (Paterson) Shannon, of Noblehill Farm, Dumfries.
Died on Service on 4 March 1919 and buried in Dumfries (St. Michael's) Cemetery.
Also named on the Townhead Church memorial now in St. Michael's Church in Dumfries.


PTE. WILLIAM SHARKEY, KOSB.
William Sharkey – age 27 – Private (23480) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was employed with a Government contractor at the munitions factory at Dornock, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted.
Born 1890 in Dumfries. Son of Michael and Emily (Jones) Sharkey of College Street, Maxwelltown. Husband of Ellen Jane (Black) Sharkey of 42 Loreburn Street, Dumfries who he married in 1912 in Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 16 August 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

PTE. HUGH SHARP, CONNAUGHT R.
Thought to be:
Hugh Sharpe – age 29 – Private (5241) 6th Battalion, Royal Munster Fusiliers.
Formerly Private (13246) Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.
Hugh was working as a ship-rigger in a Glasgow shipyard, and living at White Street in Govan, when he enlisted in August 1914 in the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. He was posted to the Munsters before the battalion left for Gallipoli, landing at Suvla Bay in August 1915. In October 1915 they were withdrawn and moved to Salonika in northern Greece. After almost two years there they moved again this time to Egypt, landing in September 1917, for service in Palestine.
Born 1889 in Dumfries. Son of James and Mary Sharpe of Church Street, Maxwelltown and later of Govan, Glasgow.
Missing in Action on 29 March 1918 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
Also named on the Glasgow Roll of Honour - as Hugh Sharpe, Royal Munster Fusiliers.
Hugh was one of five brothers who served. Bernard, Private (4898) 1st Irish Guards and Michael Private (19591) Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers were both badly wounded.
In 1901 James,45 Mary,43 James,20 Mary,18 Michael,16 John,14 Hugh,11 Bernard,7 and Teresa,4 were at Orchard Street in Govan

Formerly Private (S/18209) 10th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and Private (S/41416) 1/5th Gordon Highlanders.
Born 1898 in Tongland, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Thomas and Jane Sherman of Nithsdale Terrace, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 10 April 1918 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.

William Currie Sherman – age 38 – Sergeant (22/343) 22nd (Tyneside Scottish) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers.
William was employed in a ship-yard at Wallsend, Northumberland when he enlisted.
Born 1878 in Auchencairn, Rerrick, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Thomas and Jane Sherman of Nithsdale Terrace, Dumfries. Husband of Mary Jane (Jackson) Sherman of 40 Victoria Terrace, Wallsend-on-Tyne who he married in 1905 at Wallsend, Tynemouth, Northumberland.
Died of Wounds on 15 June 1917 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Swan Hunter and Wigham Richardson shipyards memorial in Wallsend.


SERGT. A. M. SINCLAIR, CANADA.
Alfred Marriott Sinclair – age 45 – Sergeant (129389) 72nd Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Seaforth Highlanders of Canada).
Alfred was a book-keeper living with his wife at Broadway East in Vancouver, British Columbia when he enlisted there in September 1915.
Born 1872 in Penpont, Dumfriesshire. Son of Samuel Sinclair and Mary Dobson (Wilson) Sinclair of Penpont. Husband of Elizabeth Nisbet (Gibson) Sinclair of Kimberley, Prestwick and of 158 Queen's Drive, Glasgow who he married in 1901 in Gorbals, Glasgow.
Killed in Action on 9 April 1917 and buried in Canadian Cemetery No.2, Neuville-St.Vaast, France.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Dumfries.

C.S.M. FRED. SINCLAIR, KOSB

Frederick William Sinclair – age 47 – Company Sergeant Major (26) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Fred was foreman warehouseman with a tweed merchants in Loreburn Street, Dumfries and for a long period was a committee member of Dumfries Football Club.
A long-standing member of the 3rd Volunteer Battalion (Dumfriesshire) KOSB, Fred enlisted with the Dumfries Company of the newly formed 5th KOSB in April 1908. He landed at Gallipoli with the 1/5th KOSB on 6 June 1915, where he served as Company Sergeant Major of 'A' Coy.
Fred died in hospital on Mudros after an attack of jaundice.
Born 1868 in Penpont, Dumfriesshire. Son of Samuel Sinclair and Mary Dobson (Wilson) Sinclair of 10 Glebe Terrace, Dumfries.
Died on Active Service on 11 November 1915 and buried in Portianos Military Cemetery, Lemnos, Greece.
Also named on the Penpont War Memorial and on the St Mary's Church memorial in Dumfries.

PTE. J. SLIMMONDS, KOSB.
John Slimmons – age 26 – Private (9302) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John had originally enlisted in the KOSB in August 1905 and was in India with the 1st KOSB in 1911. He was working in a shipyard in Greenock when he married in 1913 and was probably a reservist as he joined his battalion in France on 12 September 1914.
Born 1888 in Dumfries as John Slimmon Denard. Son of Elizabeth Denard.
In 1891 the family were in Irish Street, Dumfies as Archibald Slimmon 39, Elizabeth Denard 23, Maria Denard 4. John Denard 2.
John's marriage register entry show his parents as the late Archibald Slimmons and Elizabeth (Currie) Slimmons (later Mrs Thomas Campbell)
Husband of Mary (Connelly) Slimmons of 1 William Street, Greenock who he married in 1913 in Greenock West, Renfrewshire.
Missing in Action on 28 October 1914 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.


PTE. ALBERT SMITH, R.S.F.
Albert Smith – age 26 – Private (29964) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Formerly Private (S/8471) Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Albert was a clogger when he enlisted in the Argylls in March 1915 in Stirling. Pre-war he had served with the 5th KOSB Territorials from 1908 to 1911. He joined the 10th A&SH in France in October 1915 but was wounded in July 1916 and invalided home. He returned to France in the November and was transferred to the 1st RSF but was then posted to the 12th RSF in Egypt in July 1917. He was a nephew of Patrick O'Neil, KOSB. (See above)
Born c.1891 in Carlisle. Son of the late Peter Smith and of Jane Smith of 50 Irish Street, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 4 November 1917 and buried in Beersheba War Cemetery, Israel.


GUNNR. H. M. B. SMITH, R.F.A.
Herries Muir Brown Smith – age 24 – Gunner (133690) “D” Battery, 50th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
Herries was a drapers salesman and was living at 46 Lockerbie Road in Dumfries in 1915.
Born 1894 in Kirkcudbright. Son of Maggie Smith. Husband of Mabel Mary (Shannan) Smith who he married in 1915 in Ruthwell, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action on 27 March 1918 and buried in Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Dumfries as Herries M. B. Smith


GUNNR. JAMES SMITH, R.F.A.
I cannot identify this man.
The D&G Standard of 16/6/15 p.4 reported that a James Smith of the 4th Lowland Brigade, RFA had been wounded and was being treated in the Red Cross Hospital in Maxwelltown. However it provided no other details and he was not mentioned again.

James Smith – age 21 – Private (2117 & 240627) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Educated at St. John's School in Dumfries, James was a grocer in Dumfries when he enlisted in October 1914. He served in Egypt and Palestine.
Born 1895 in Birkdale, Southport, Lancashire. Son of Alexander and Agnes Smith of Southport.
Cousin of his next of kin Miss Mary F. Smith of 34 Academy Street, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 19 April 1917 and buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine.
Also named on the St John's School Memorial now inside St John's Episcopal Church.


PTE. WILLIAM SMITH, KOSB.
William Smith – age 37 – Private (17383) 2nd Battalion, “C” Company, 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was a cattledrover and he and his wife and family lived with his father-in-law, James McBurnie (a butcher), and his family at 145 High Street Dumfries. William joined his battalion in France on 27 April 1915.
Born c.1878 in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Son of William and Mary (Wilson) Smith. Husband of Phillippa (McBurnie) Smith of 145 High Street, Dumfries who he married in 1905 in Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 5 May 1915 and Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

PIPER MURDO STEWART, KOSB.
Murdo Stewart – age 27 – Private (799) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Murdo enlisted in the 5th KOSB Territorials in March 1911. He was a lithographer with J. Maxwell and Son, Printers and Publishers of Dumfries. He was wounded, losing four fingers of his left hand, on 12 July 1915 and was evacuated home to Henry Street, Dumfries. He was officially discharged from the army on 8 January, seven days after his death.
Born c.1891 in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, USA. Son of George and Elizabeth (Robertson) Stewart of Henry Street, Dumfries and of Maxwelltown.
Died on Service on 1 January 1918 and buried in Dumfries Cemetery.
Also named on the St. Michael's Church memorial in Dumfries and the J. Maxwell company Roll of Honour, now in Dumfries Museum


SAP. ROBERT STEWART, R.E.
Note the family gravestone and all civil records have the family name as STUART
Robert Stewart – age 21 – Driver (219368) Royal Engineers Training Depot (Aldershot)
Educated at Noblehill School in Dumfries, Robert was a Railway Greaser. He died in Parkhead Hospital in Dumfries of a cerebral haemorrhage
Born 1895 in Dumfries. Son of the late Robert Stuart and of Janet (Dickson) Stuart of Front Row, Gasstown, Dumfries.
Died on Service on 1 June 1917 and buried in Dumfries (St. Michael's) Cemetery


PTE. WALTER STEWART, KOSB.
Walter Duncan Grieve Stewart – age 25 – Private (2669 & 240855)1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Born 1892 in Dumfries. Son of the late Edmond and Mary Jane Stewart of 55 Friars Vennel, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 19 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.

Thomas William Stordy – age 30 – Gunner (168012) 160th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery.
Thomas was living in Glasgow when he enlisted there.
Born 1887 in Carlisle. Son of John and Jane Stordy of Primrose Bank, Lockerbie Road, Dumfries. Husband of Georgina Kerr (Murray) Stordy of 171 Sandyfaulds Street, Glasgow who he married in 1910 in Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 24 April 1918 and buried in Warloy-Baillon Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.
Also named on the Townhead Church memorial now in St. Michael's Church in Dumfries and on the Glasgow Roll of Honour.

Thomas Tait – age 19 – Private (18928) 6th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Educated at Noblehill School in Dumfries, Thomas was an engine cleaner with the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company at Dumfries when he enlisted in June 1915. He joined his battalion in France on 2 October but was wounded and died in the 23rd General Hospital in Etaples.
Born 1896 in Rerrick, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of the late Robert Tait and of Janet (Carnochan) Tait of Milldamhead, Annan Road, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 11 November 1915 and buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
Also named on the G&SW Railway Memorial now in Ayr Station.


PTE. WILLIAM TAIT, A.&S.H.
William Tait – age 27 – Private (S/16034) 11th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
William has served his apprenticeship as a nurseryman at Larchfield in Dumfries and was employed by Barr & Hunter, Seedsmen when he enlisted in November 1915. He was mobilised in February 1916 and joined his battalion in France in June 1916.
Born 1889 in Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire. Son of William and Ellen Tait of 114 Queensberry Street, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 15 September 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the St. Michael's Church memorial in Dumfries.


PTE. JOHN M. TEENAN, KOSB.
John Michael Teenan – age 25 – Private (22800) “D” Company, 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was a cabinetmaker in Dumfries when he enlisted in February 1916. He joined the 2nd KOSB in France in June before transferring the the 1st KOSB.
Born 1890 in Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Robert and Mary Nicholas (Carruthers) Teenan of 9 Maxwell Street, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 27 September 1916 and buried in Vlamertinghe Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Dumfries Academy Memorial.

PTE. DAVID THOM, R.S.F.
David Alexander Thom – age 36 – Private (13329) 7th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Educated at Noblehill School in Dumfries, David had been a Railway Fireman at Dumfries where his father was an Engine Driver. He was living in Troon when he enlisted at Ayr. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915.
Born 1879 in Dumfries. Son of William and Helen Thom of Dumfries. Husband of Margaret Isabel (Paterson) Thom (later Mrs. Cowan) of 1 Collinan Terrace, Gillis Street, Troon, Ayrshire who he had married in 1901 in Kirkcudbright.
Died of Wounds on 13 May 1916 and buried in Bethune Town Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Troon War Memorial.


PTE. JOHN THOM, KOSB.
John Thom – age 30 – Private (1727) “A” Company, 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He contracted dysentery and evacuated to Egypt where he died in the 5th Canadian Hospital in Abbassia Barracks, Cairo.
Born 1885 in Dumfries. Son of John and Jane Thom of 21 High Street, Dumfries. Husband of Maggie Jane (Wills) Thom, of "Ivy Bank," Maxweltown and of 42 Loreburn Street, Dumfries who he married in 1911 in Dumfries.
Died on Active Service on 14 October 1915 and buried in Cairo War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the St John's Episcopal Church memorial in Dumfries.


L-CPL. G. RAMSAY THOMSON, R.FUS.
George Ramsay Thomson – age 27 – Lance Corporal (5244) 12th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers.
George was an architect and a partner in Crombie & Thomson of Irish Street, Dumfries. He enlisted in August 1914 in London and landed with his battalion in France on 1 September 1915.
Born 1887 in Dumfries. Son of the late Sarah (McQueen) Thomson and of George Thomson. Step-son of Barbara Thomson of West Grove, St. Cuthbert's Avenue, Maxwelltown, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 28 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Dumfries Academy Memorial and on the St George's Church memorial in Dumfries.


PTE. R. THOMSON, KOSB.
Robert Thomson – age 56 – Private (3080 & 20081) 5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert had previously served with the Galloway Rifles. In August 1914 and despite his age he managed to enlist in the Army Reserve. He died suddenly at home of angina.
Born c.1859 in Dumfries. Son of the late James and Mary Thomson. Husband of the late Bridget Quin and of Elizabeth (Shaw) Thomson of 18 St. David Street, Dumfries.
Died on Service on 28 March 1915 and buried in Troqueer Cemetery, Dumfries.

PTE. T. J. THOMSON, AUSTRALIA.
Thomas James Thomson – age 26 – Private (1115) 4th Battalion, Australian Infantry.
Thomas was a joiner when he enlisted in September 1914 at Randwick, Sydney, NSW and he sailed from Sydney in the October. Pre war he had served with KOSB. He was wounded on 9 May 1915 at Gallipoli and evacuated to the 17th Australian Hospital in Alexandria where he died.
Born 1889 in Dumfries. Son of John and Mary (MacDonald) Thomson of Rae Street, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 11 May 1915 and buried in Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the Dumfries Academy Memorial.


PTE. GEORGE TINNING, BLK.WATCH.
George Tinning – age 23 – Private (6613 & 7183 & 268378) 1/6th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) Formerly Private (294) Scottish Horse Yeomanry.
George was employed as a grocer in Dumfries when he enlisted in August 1914 in the 1/3rd Battalion, Scottish Horse Yeomanry. The Scottish Horse battalions landed as Infantry at Gallipoli in September 1915. George was wounded and evacuated to Alexandria, Egypt. He was invalided home to recover and was transferred to the 6th Black Watch before he went to France in December 1916. He died in the 30th Casualty Clearing Station at Aubigny.
Born 1894 in Dumfries. Son of George and Mary Tinning of 45 Brooke Street, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 8 April 1917 and buried in Aubigny Communal Cemetery Extension, France.


PTE. JAMES W. TODD, CAMERON H.
James Wells Todd – age 19 – Private (S/18009) 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
James was a clerk in Dumfries when he enlisted in May 1915. He joined the 2nd Camerons in France in July and was posted to the 1st Battalion in October 1915. He died in the 2nd Field Ambulance at Contalmaison Chateau.
Born 1897 in Johnstone, Dumfriesshire. Son of William and Ellen or Helen Todd of 66 Buccleuch Street and of 8 Kirkowen Street, Annan Road, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 23 July 1916 and buried in Contalmaison Chateau Cemetery, Somme, France.
Also named on the Greyfriars Church memorial in Dumfries.


C.S.M. R. TOWNSEND, DCM, KOSB.
Robert Townsend, Distinguished Conduct Medal – age 28 – Company Sergeant Major (2028 & 240579) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was a Policeman in Newcastle when he enlisted. He died in the Nasrieh School Hospital in Cairo.
He was awarded the DCM in 1917 as 240579 C.S.M. R. Townsend, K.O.S.B.
"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in rallying his men after they had been repulsed from an enemy redoubt, and leading them with great determination again to the attack".
Born 1889 in Hawick, Roxburghshire. Son of Charles and Mary Townsend of 54 Bank Street, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 21 November 1917 and buried in Cairo War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the St John's Episcopal Church memorial in Dumfries and on the Hawick Roll of Honour.

PTE. ROBERT TRODDEN, KOSB.
Robert Trodden – age 37 – Private (16275) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was a stone mason at Barjarg Tower, Keir, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted in October 1914. He was drowned when the Troopship “Royal Edward” was torpedoed and sunk by UB-14 in the Aegean.
Born 1879 in Annan, Dumfriesshire. Son of John and Margaret Trodden of Blackhills, Annan. Husband of Elizabeth (Lizzie McDonald) Trodden, of 113 St. Michael Street, Dumfries who he married in 1903 in Dumfries.
Killed by enemy action/Lost at Sea on 13 August 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

Born 1893 in Dumfries. Son of the late Frederick W. Tuellmann and of Mary Jane (Boyle) Tuellmann of 2 Huntingdon Road, Dumfries.

Born 1894 in Dumfries. Son of George and Margaret (McDonnell) Turner of Swans Vennel, Dumfries. Husband of Mary (Marchbank) Turner of 70 Shakespeare Street, Dumfries who he married in 1914 in Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 20 July 1916 and buried in Dive Copse British Cemetery, Sailly-le-Sec, France.

PTE. DAVID TWEEDIE, KOSB.
David Tweedie – age 19 – Private (241003) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
David had originally enlisted in the 2/5th KOSB in January 1915 when he was just over 15 years old. He went to France at the beginning of April 1918 and was officially reported missing later that month. However he sent a letter to his mother in June and the report was cancelled. Sadly he died later that year.
Born 1899 in Castle Douglas, Kelton, Kirkcudbrightshire as James Davidson. Son of Nellie Davidson of Leswalt, Wigtownshire. Foster son of David and Annie Tweedie of Thistle Lodge, Greenbrae, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 30 September 1918 and buried in Dadizeele New British Cemetery, Belgium.

George Turner Wallace – age 21 – Private (4631 & 241258) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George was employed at the Rosefield Mills in Maxwelltown when he enlisted. He was wounded at the second battle of Gaza in April 1917 but recovered to take part in the later actions in Palestine where he was wounded again. He was evacuated back to Egypt but died in the 44th Stationary Hospital in Kantara.

William was a draper in Dumfries when he enlisted in December 1914. He joined the 2nd Camerons in France in June 1915 and in May 1916 was transferred to the MGC. He survived the war but died from pneumonia at the Rest Camp Hospital in Cherbourg.
Born 1893 in Dumfries. Son of John and Janet Wallace of 4 Manse Cottage, Dock Park, Dumfries.
Died on Service on 18 December 1918 and buried in Tourlaville Communal Cemetery and Extension, Cherbourg, France.


PTE. ROBERT WALLER, KOSB.
Robert Waller – age 22 – Private (874 & 203483) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was a postman at St. John's town of Dalry in Kirkcudbrightshire when he enlisted in August 1914. He landed with the 1/5th KOSB at Gallipoli in June 1915. He was wounded and invalided home but when he had fully recovered he was posted to the 7th/8th KOSB in France in August 1917.
Born 1895 in Dumfries. Son of Robert and Isabella Waller of 105 English Street, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 28 March 1918 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.

Born 1889 in Dumfries as Robert Gorman. Son of Elizabeth Gorman, later Mrs. Thomas Meechan, of 167 High Street, Dumfries.

Clement Henderson Walter – age 31 – Private (29853) “C” Company, 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Clement had worked for a number of years at the “Scotsman” newspaper and was employed on newspaper work in Dumfries when he enlisted in January 1915. He played the organ at a number of Dumfries churches and was a pianist at many local concerts.
Born 1885 in Newington, Edinburgh. Son of the late Elspeth (Henderson) Walter and of James Walter of 76 Bonaly Road, Edinburgh. Husband of Laura Ann (Lothian) Walter of Polton Road, Lasswade, Midlothian who he married in 1914 in Lasswade.
Missing in Action on 9 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.

John Watson – age 41 – Lance Corporal (1831) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Pre-war John had served in India with the KOSB. When he re-enlisted in August 1914 he was working at the Rosefield Mills in Maxwelltown. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915.

James contracted dysentery and was invalided home. He returned to France in September 1917 and served with the 1st RSF.

James Samuel Wells – age 21 – Private (76797) 22nd Casualty Clearing Station, Royal Army Medical Corps.
James was a chemist's assistant in Dumfries when he enlisted in November 1915. In August 1916 he was posted to the 51st and the 26th General Hospitals in Etaples, France and in November 1916 was transferred to the 22nd CCS which, when it moved to Cambrai two years later, was where he died from influenza.
Born 1897 in Castle Douglas, Kelton, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Robert Black Wells and of Mary Anderson Wells of 9 Wallace Street, Dumfries.
Died on Service on 23 November 1918 and buried in Cambrai East Military Cemetery, France.

Robert was a fireman with the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company at Corkerhill in Glasgow when he enlisted. He joined the 1st HLI in France in January 1915 and was wounded at Neuve Chapelle. He was invalided to hospital in Cheshire and when recovered was transferred to the 1st KOSB and sailed with them to Gallipoli.
Born 1895 in Dumfries. Son of the late John Wemyss and of Mary (McDonald) Wemyss of 116 Irish Street, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 19 June 1915 and buried in Twelve Tree Copse Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.

William White – age 18 – Boy 1st Class (J/29911) H.M.S. "Formidable" Royal Navy.
Educated at St. John's School in Dumfries, William had been a choir-boy at St.John's for a number of years. He was an apprentice plumber when he joined the navy in March 1914. He was posted to the battleship “Formidable” in June and had just signed-on for 12 years when he was drowned when his ship was torpedoed and sunk in the English Channel off Lyme Regis by the German submarine U-24.
Born 1897 in Dumfries. Son of William and Mary White of 30 English Street, Dumfries.
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 1 January 1915 and named on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.
Also named on the St John's School Memorial, now inside St John's Episcopal Church, and on the church memorial.

James had been brought up at the Crichton Royal Institution in Dumfries where his father was a gardener and he was working at the Bangour Asylum in Linlithgowshire when he enlisted at Uphall (now West Lothian) He joined his battalion in France on 2 October 1915.
Born 1894 in Dumfries. Son of the late Archibald William Douglas Wightman and of Agnes Mary (Scott) Wightman of 6 St. Michael Street, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 23 October 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.

2nd LT. ALEX. N. WILSON, KOSB.
Alexander Newbigging Wilson – age 26 – Second Lieutenant: 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Formerly Private (2905 & 330760) 1/9th (Glasgow Highlanders) Highland Light Infantry.
Alexander had been an ironmonger with his father in Dumfries but was working in Glasgow when he enlisted. He went to France with his battalion in November 1914 and served with the 1/9th HLI until he was wounded at the Somme in July 1916. He was selected for officer training, commissioned in the KOSB in March 1917 and went to Egypt in May 1917.
Born 1891 in Dumfries. Son of James and Jane Pringle (Newbigging) Wilson of 3 Lovers' Walk, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 24 November 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.

Jack was a member of St. Michael's church choir and a sorting clerk and telegraphist at Dumfries Post Office when he enlisted in October 1916. He went to France in January 1917 and served in a Wireless Company. He died in the 2nd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station.
Born 1896 in Dumfries. Son of David and Lizzie Jane Wilson of 1 Park Terrace, Glebe Street, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 26 July 1917 and buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.

Thomas Wilson – age 30 – Driver (M2/047741) 621st Mechanical Transport Company, Army Service Corps.
Thomas was a chauffeur with the Gladstone family at Capenoch House, Penpont, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted in February 1915 at Grove Park, Greenwich, London. He went to France in May but by December was back in the UK. He returned to France in March 1916 and was attached to the 5th Battalion, Special Brigade of the Royal Engineers.

William emigrated to Canada in 1912. He enlisted in April 1915 in Toronto, Ontario and in November arrived in England where he became an instructor at the Shorncliffe Camp in Kent. He went to France in June 1916.
Born 1891 in Dumfries. Son of William and Janet Wilson of Maxwell Street, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 11 July 1916. and buried in Woods Cemetery, Belgium.

James Thomson Wright – age 41 – Private (6483) 2/6th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
James was a described as a Restaurant Keeper at “McKie's Eating House” in Friars Vennel in Dumfries when he enlisted in June 1916. Probably because of his age he was posted to a second-line battalion of the Argylls for “home” service. In early 1917 they were in East Anglia when James became ill. He was taken to the 1st Eastern General Hospital in Cambridge where he died from meningitis.
Born 1876 in Kirkgunzeon, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of the late John and Jessie Wright of Newhouse, Cowar Cottage and of Camphill, Kirkgunzeon. Husband of Elizabeth Milligan (McKie)Wright of 36 Friars Vennel, Dumfries who he married in 1911 in Dumfries.
Died on Service on 15 March 1917 and buried in Dumfries (St. Michael's) Cemetery.
Also named on the St George's Church memorial in Dumfries.


LIEUT. WILLIAM WYLLIE, L.Y.
William Wyllie – age 26 – Lieutenant: Lanarkshire Yeomanry attached to 11th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
After attending Dumfries Academy, William trained in his father's grain merchant business in Dumfries but in about 1909 he went to Argentina and latterly he had been under-manager of a ranch at San Baldomero in Buenos Aires Province. He returned to enlist in September 1914 and, with his brother John Taylor Wyllie, joined the Dragoons. The brothers were commissioned as Second Lieutenants in the Lanarkshire Yeomanry in April 1915. William was promoted to Lieutenant a year later and went to Salonica in November 1916.
Born 1890 in Dumfries. Son of James and Elizabeth Wyllie of Elmbank, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 10 April 1917 and buried in Karasouli Military Cemetery, Greece.
Also named on the Dumfries Academy Memorial.
