GUNNR. JOHN NEILSON, R.F.A.
John Neilson – age 21 – Gunner (103910) “C” Battery, 98th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
Educated at Noblehill School in Dumfries, John was a lino-type operator at the “Standard” when he enlisted in August 1915. He trained at Maryhill Barracks in Glasgow before he went to Salonica in March 1916. He contracted malaria and dysentery and died in the No.28 General Hospital.
Born 1895 in Dumfries. Son of Donald and Maggie Neilson of 9 Kirkowen Street, Dumfries.
Died on Active Service on 29 October 1916 and buried in Salonika (Lembet Road) Military Cemetery, Greece.
Also named on the Greyfriars Church memorial in Dumfries.


PTE. JOHN NEISHMAN, KOSB.
Note: All military records use Neishman. Civil records have NEISHAM.
John Neishman – age 24 – Private (1722) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was working as a labourer at the Crichton Royal Institution when he enlisted in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915.
Born 1891 in Dumfries. Son of William and Helen (McMurdo) Neisham of 4 Burns Street, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 23 November 1915 and buried in Redoubt Cemetery, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the St. Michael's Church memorial in Dumfries.


PTE. JAMES NELSON, KOSB.
James Nelson – age 27 – Private (9510) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James and his brother Joseph were brought up by their grandmother, Wilhelmina Adams, in Lochthorn, Dumfries. James joined the Army in about 1907 and was with the 1st KOSB in India when war broke out. The battalion returned to the UK before landing at Gallipoli in April 1915.
Born 1887 in Dumfries. Son of the late Andrew and Wilhelmina (Adams) Nelson.
Killed in Action on 10 May 1915 and buried in Pink Farm Cemetery, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the memorial in Locharbriggs village hall in Dumfries.


PTE. JOHN F. D. NELSON, S.R.
Note: on some records the family name is Neilson.
John Fife Dickson Nelson – age 32 – Private (34504) 5th/6th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) Formerly Private (2748) KOSB.
John had been a painter at the Crichton Royal Institution when he enlisted in 1914. He had been in France for a year and died in the No. 3 General Hospital at Le Treport.
Born c.1886 in Dumfries. Son of late James and Maria (Dickson) Nelson of Greenbrae, Dumfries. Husband of Isabella (Edmond) Nelson of 35 Swans Vennel, Dumfries who he married in 1912 in Glasgow.
Died of Wounds on 25 September 1918 and buried in Mont Huon Military Cemetery, Le Treport, France.
Also named on the St. Michael's Church memorial in Dumfries.


2nd LT. A. T. NEWBIGGING, R.S.F.
Alexander Tweedie Newbigging – age 20 – Second Lieutenant: 3rd Battalion attached to 1st Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Alexander had left Dumfries Academy in 1913 to attend the Royal Technical College in Glasgow. He was an apprentice civil engineer and a member of the Officer Training Corps when he was commissioned in March 1915. He joined the RSF in France in April 1916 and was wounded at the Somme in July.
Born 1897 in Dumfries. Son of Elizabeth Newbigging of 12 Windsor Circus, Glasgow, and the late John Newbigging of Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 3 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Dumfries Academy Memorial and on the Royal Technical College Memorial.


PTE. JAMES NICHOL, R.S.F.
James Conlin Nichol – age 35 – Private (17015) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
James had served for a number of years in the Gordon Highlanders and, at the outbreak of war, he re-enlisted but in the RSF. He joined his battalion in France in February 1915 and had only been at the front about a month when he was wounded. He was evacuated but died in the Jervis Street Hospital in Dublin.
Born 1880 in Dumfries as James Conlin. Son of Rose Ann (Conlin) Nichol and step-son of William Nichol of 14 High Street, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 17 April 1915 and buried in Grangegorman Military Cemetery, Dublin, Ireland.

PTE. GEORGE J. NICOLL, H.L.I.
Note: some military records show his second name as James.
George John Nicoll – age 29 – Private (40850) 17th (3rd Glasgow) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. Formerly Private (7865) Royal Scots.
George was a butcher in Dumfries when he enlisted in March 1916. He went to France in August as a Royal Scot but was posted to the HLI.
Born 1888 in Dumfries as George John Nicoll. Son of Thomasina (McLean) Nicoll of 92 Lockerbie Road, Dumfries, and the late James S. Nicoll.
Killed in Action on 18 November 1916 and buried in Frankfurt Trench British Cemetery, Beaumont-Hamel, France.


PTE. CHARLES NICHOLSON, KOSB.
Charles Gillan Nicholson – age 19 – Private (1757) “C” Company, 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Charles was the son of Sergeant (4246) William Nicholson of “D” company 2/5th KOSB and was brought up in Dumfries. He was a motor mechanic when he enlisted in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915.
He was a nephew of Private (1736) John Carruthers, of St. Michael's Buildings, Dumfries who also served with the 1/5th KOSB and who was killed on 19 June 1915 at Gallipoli. (See above)
Born 1896 in Dumfries. Son of William and Sarah (Gillan) Nicholson of 56 Main Street, Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial , Gallipoli, Turkey.


PTE. JOHN NIVEN, SEAFORTH H.
John Niven – age 20 – Private (S/16260) 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Born 1897 in Rutherglen, Lanarkshire. Son of Robert and Hannah Niven.
In 1901 John Niven, aged 3, born Rutherglen and a nephew, was with the Kirkpatrick family in Terregles, Dumfries. His siblings, Annie 11, Robert 9 and Hannah 7, were at 149 St. Michael Street Dumfries with their Grandmother Ann Niven, 71.
Annie and Robert were named as his next of kin on the Army Registers of Soldiers effects and they placed an In Memoriam message to “Our Dear Brother – 149 St. Michael Street, Dumfries”.
Missing in Action on 4 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the St. Michael's Church memorial in Dumfries.


LIEUT. JOHN NOBLE, M.G.C.
John Noble – age 30 – Lieutenant: 5th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders attached to 9th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps. Formerly Corporal (S/12793) 6th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
John was educated at Dumfries Academy and in 1905 went to Glasgow University where he would study for eight years. During this time he took subjects spanning the arts and sciences including Latin, Moral Philosophy, Maths and Chemistry. He won prizes in Honours Maths, Astronomy and Physical Laboratory. In November 1913 he graduated both MA and BSc (Pure Science) and then qualified as a teacher from Jordanhill Teacher Training College. He was at Henderson Street School in Glasgow when he enlisted in September 1914 and he landed with the 6th Camerons at Boulogne in July 1915. He had been promoted to Lance Corporal in January 1915 and then to Corporal in September before being commissioned in February 1916.
Born 1888 in Dumfries. Son of Joseph and Marian Noble of 28 Cardoness Street, Dumfries. Husband of Agnes Lennox Muir (McLeod) Noble who he married in 1917 in Kirkmahoe, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action on 28 September 1918 and buried in Ypres Town Cemetery Extension, Belgium.
Also named on the Dumfries Academy Memorial, on the Glasgow University Roll of Honour, on Jordanhill Teacher Training College Memorial and on the Glasgow City Council Education Department memorial.

PTE. DANIEL O'CONNELL, KOSB.
Daniel O'Connell – age 22 – Private (1974) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Daniel was a butcher in Dumfries Market when he enlisted in the 3rd KOSB Special Reserve in August 1910 as Private (6025). He had joined the Territorials 5th KOSB in April 1909 when he was 17 as Private (571). In August 1914 he was working as a trimmer at the Arrol-Johnston Motor Works at Heathhall, Dumfries and he landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915.
Born 1893 in Dumfries. Son of Daniel and Mary Jane O'Connell of Loreburn Street Dumfries. Husband of Mary (Bell) O'Connell of 16 Queensberry Street, Dumfries who he married in 1914 in Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the former Laurieknowe Church memorial now in Troqueer Parish church.


PTE. J. G. O'NEIL, KOSB. {same man} PTE. JOHN G. O'NEIL, LABOUR C.
John George O'Neill – age 31 – Private (22017) King's Own Scottish Borderers, transferred as Private (439139) to Labour Corps, 662nd (Home Service) Company.
John died on influenza in the Military Hospital at Curragh Camp, Dublin.
Born c.1887 in Glasgow. Son of the late James and Ann (Hill) O'Neill. Husband of Margaret Ann (Coulthart) O'Neill of Greenside, Edinburgh and of 167 High Street, Dumfries who he married in 1908 in Dumfries.
Died on Service on 26 November 1918 and buried in Edinburgh Eastern Cemetery.


L-CPL. PATRICK O'NEIL, KOSB.
Patrick O'Neil – age 36 – Lance Corporal (6348) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Patrick was born in Carlisle but after his father's death in 1891 the family moved to Dumfries.
He joined the army in about 1896 and served in the South African War. In 1911 he was with his battalion in Berwick before they went out to India. He returned with them at the end of 1914 before sailing again in March 1915 to Gallipoli.
Born c.1878 in Carlisle. Son of the late Charles O'Neil and of Susan (Collins) O'Neil, of Dumfries.
Brother of Mrs M Fox of 33 Loreburn Street, Dumfries and uncle of Private Albert Smith. (see below)
Died of Wounds on 10 June 1915 and buried in East Mudros Military Cemetery, Greece.

PTE. ROBERT PAGAN, KOSB.
This name is also on the St John's School Memorial, now inside St John's Episcopal Church, and on the church memorial.

There are two men who this might be:

Robert Pagan – age 35 – Private (6381) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert joined the army as Private (6739) in June 1899 and served in the South African War. In 1902 he went to India and served there, and in Burma, until his term expired. He was transferred to the Army Reserve in June 1907 and discharged in June 1911. He rejoined his old battalion in 1914 and went to France on 11 January 1915.
Born 1880 in Maxwelltown, Torqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of the late William and Agnes Pagan of 10 South Queensberry Street, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 9 February 1915 and buried in Dranouter Churchyard, Belgium.

OR

Robert Pagan – age 19 – Private (25049) “D” Company, 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was a vanman with the Dumfries and Maxwelltown Co-operative Society when he enlisted in June 1916.
Born 1897 In Glencairn, Dumfriesshire. Son of David and Susan (Edgar) Pagan of 6 Briarbank, Greenbrae, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 13 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.


PTE. JOHN PATTERSON, LONDON REG.
John Patterson – age 36 – Rifleman (452764) “A” Company, 2/11th Battalion, London Regiment (Finsbury Rifles)
John was a carpenter and was living in Kennington in London when he enlisted there in October 1916. By the following February he was in France. He died in the 61st Casualty Clearing Station.
Born 1881 in Dumfries. Son of James K. and Ellen Patterson of 52 English Street, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 23 September 1917 and buried in Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium.


PTE. CHARLES PEARSON, KOSB.
Charles Pearson – age 22 – Private (7221) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Charles joined the 2nd KOSB in France in December 1914.
Born 1891 in Dumfries. Son of the late David Pearson and of Elizabeth (Flinn or McKune) Pearson of High Street, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 15 November 1915 and buried in Carnoy Military Cemetery, Somme, France.

PTE. DAVID PEARSON, KOSB

David Pearson – age 33 – Private (9965) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
David had joined the army in August 1907 and served with the 1st KOSB in India. He was wounded at Gallipoli and then went with his battalion to France in March 1916. He was wounded at the Somme and evacuated to the Cambridge Hospital in Aldershot where his left foot was amputated.
David was awarded a Silver War Badge (90307) and discharged from the army in December 1916.
He died of Tuberculosis at 26 High Street, Dumfries.
Born 1887 in Dumfries as David Johnstone Flynn. Son of Elizabeth (Flynn) Pearson of High Street, Dumfries. David Pearson married Elizabeth (Flinn) McKune, a widow, in 1889 in Dumfries but David (senior) is shown as his father on the death register entry for David (junior).
Died on 28 March 1920.
His mother's eldest son, Andrew McKune, was killed in the South African War. Andrew enlisted as Private (6325) in the 1st KOSB in January 1898.
Born 1880 in Stewarton, Ayrshire. Father James. Mother Elizabeth (Flynn) who married in 1873 in Kilmarnock.

William McClure Percy – age 31 – Private (41527) “B” Company, 11th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Formerly Private (21891) Highland Light Infantry.
William was a hairdresser in Dumfries when he enlisted in February 1917. He was posted to the HLI in France in May 1917 but transferred to the 2nd Royal Scots. He was wounded in September 1917 and evacuated to hospital in Southall, Middlesex. He returned to France in April 1918 and was posted to the 11th Royal Scots.
Born 1887 in Dumfries. Son of Andrew and Agnes Percy of Dumfries. Husband of Bessie Armstrong (Johnstone) Percy of 74 English Street and of 1 Cameron Place, Craigs Road, Dumfries who he married in 1916 in Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 29 September 1918 and buried in Dadizeele New British Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Dumfries.


PTE. J. PHILLIPS, KOSB
John Phillips – age 35 – Private (16283) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John joined the 2nd KOSB in France in January 1915.
Born 1881 in Kirkpatrick-Fleming, Dumfrieshire. Son of the late James Phillips and of Jane Phillips (later Mrs William Cook) of Springfield, Gretna, Dumfriesshire.
Missing in Action on 10 July 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
John and his brother James, Private (7543) 2nd Border Regiment, who died of wounds on 12 November 1917, are named on the Gretna War Memorial and are named on adjacent family graves in Gretna Cemetery.


PTE. JAMES PLAYER, SEAFORTH H.
James Robertson Player – age 27 – Private (2127) 1/4th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
James was an attendant at the Crichton Royal Institution before he moved into private nursing in London. He enlisted there and landed with his battalion at Le Havre in November 1914. He was killed at Neuve Chapelle. His oldest brother David was senior attendant at the CRI and his next of kin.
Born 1887 in St Andrews, Fife. Son of John and Mary (Robertson) Player of St. Andrews, Fife.
Missing in Action on 11 March 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
Also named on the St. Michael's Church memorial in Dumfries.

Brazel Gordon Preece – age 18 – Cadet: Royal Air Force.
Brazel had been employed at the Arrol-Johnston Motor Works at Heathhall, Dumfries when he joined the Royal Flying Corps in February 1918. He was killed when his RE8 aircraft crashed at 37 Training Depot Station. RAF Yatesbury in Wiltshire.
Born 1900 in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. Son of William George and Rebecca Buzza (Webster) Preece of 22 Cresswell Avenue, Dumfries.
Died on Active Service on 16 November 1918 and buried in Dumfries (St. Michael's) Cemetery.

His father also died on service but is not named on the war memorial.
William George Preece – age 53 – Sergeant (S/5656) Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Born 1866 in Gateshead, Co. Durham. Son of Edward and Mary Preece. Husband of Rebecca Buzza (Webster) Preece of 22 Cresswell Avenue, Dumfries who he married in 1884 in Falmouth, Cornwall.
Died on Service on 2 November 1919, in Birmingham, and buried in Dumfries (St. Michael's) Cemetery

Arthur Proudfoot – age 27 – Private (16509) 7th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Educated at St. John's School in Dumfries, Arthur landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915.
Born 1888 in Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire.Son of George and Mary (Thomson) Proudfoot of 38 Munches Street, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the St John's School Memorial now inside St John's Episcopal Church.


PTE. W. PROUDFOOT, KOSB.
William Proudfoot – age 37 – Private (18226) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was a butcher at the Dumfries slaughter-house when he enlisted in March 1915. He joined the 1st KOSB in Gallipoli in July 1915. He later transferred to the 2nd KOSB.
Born 1878 in Dumfries. Son of the late John and Janet (Dickson) Proudfoot of Dumfries.
Brother of John Proudfoot of 8 Burns Street, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 19 November 1916 and buried in Gorre British and Indian Cemetery, France.
Also named on the St John's Episcopal Church memorial in Dumfries.

Thought to be:
Robert John Rae – age 25 – Private (83545) 23rd Company, Machine Gun Corps.
Formerly Private (27333) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was a postman when he enlisted in October 1916. He was wounded in July 1917 and evacuated to hospital in London. He returned to the front in October 1917 but died in the 44th Casualty Clearing Station, west of Poperinge.
Born 1892 in Dunscore, Dumfriesshire. Son of Mary Jane Rae, of Burnfoot, Auldgirth, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 4 March 1918 and buried in Nine Elms British Cemetery, Belgium.


PTE. ROBERT W. RAE, GORDON H.
Robert William Rae – age 19 – Private (1912) 8th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Robert was a painter in Dumfries when he enlisted in October 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915.
Born 1896 in Gasstown, Dumfries. Son of Robert and Sarah (McCartney) Rae of 58 Friars Vennel, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.


PTE. WM. RAE, KOSB.
William Rae – age 26 – Private (1914 & 240520) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William had been a postman in Dumfries. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915.
Born c.1892 in Dumfries. Son of Andrew and Jane (McNae) Rae. Grandson of John and Mary McNae of Palnackie in Kirkcudbrightshire with whom he lived as a child at Rerrick, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Killed in Action on 29 July 1918 and buried in Oulchy-le-Chateau Churchyard Extension, France.


PTE. J. RAIN, KOSB.
John Rain – age 28 – Private (30916) 1/4th Battalion (Borders), King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was educated at the Dalbeattie Higher Grade Public School. He enlisted in May 1917 and served in Palestine where he was killed at el-Mughar.
Born 1889 at Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Andrew and Grace (McLaughlan) Rain of Dalbeattie and later of Church Crescent, Dumfries. Husband of Margaret Sturgeon (Morris) Rain of Southwick Road, Dalbeattie who he married in 1914 at Dalbeattie.
Killed in Action on 13 November 1917 and buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel.
Also named on the Dalbeattie War Memorial.


L-CPL. JOHN RAMAGE, KOSB.
John Ramage – age 22 – Lance Corporal (14604) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was employed in the Troqueer Mills when he enlisted in September 1914. He landed with the 8th KOSB at Boulogne in July 1915.
Born 1895 in Dumfries. Son of John and Isabella Ramage of 16 Brewery Street, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 19 December 1917 and buried in Heudicourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.
Also named on the St George's Church memorial in Dumfries.

Thomas (Tom) Ramsay – age 28 – Private (1708 & 240414) “A” Company, 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Educated at St. John's School in Dumfries, Tom was employed at the Dumfries Peat Works when he enlisted in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915.
Born 1889 in Dumfries. Son of James and Mary Ramsay of 5 St. Michael's Terrace Dumfries. Husband of Janet (Hanley) Ramsay of 7 Rosevale Cottages, Dumfries who he married in 1914 in Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 13 November 1917 and buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel.
Also named on the St John's School Memorial, now inside St John's Episcopal Church, and on the church memorial.

All records and all other memorials spell the name correctly as RACTLIFFE.
William Thomas Ractliffe – age 23 – Sapper (63858) 103rd Field Company, Royal Engineers.
Educated at St. John's School in Dumfries, William was an apprentice joiner in Dumfries when he enlisted in 1914. He went to France in August 1915.
Born 1893 in Dumfries. Son of George and Elizabeth (Pyle) Ractliffe of 6 Gordon Street, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 10 September 1916 and buried in Carnoy Military Cemetery, Somme, France.
Also named on the Dumfries Academy Memorial, on the Nithsdale Amateur Rowing Club Roll of Honour, on the St John's School Memorial, now inside St John's Episcopal Church, and on the church memorial.


SERGT. JAMES REID, S. GDS.
James Reid – age 27 – Sergeant (5994) 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards.
James was a grocer when he enlisted in March 1905. By 1911 he was a Corporal in the 1st Scots Guards and was serving in Egypt. In August 1914 the 2nd battalion was in London and James landed with them at Zeebrugge on 7 October 1914.
Born 1886 in Dumfries. Son of the late Samuel and Mary Ann (Lowrie) Reid of Dumfries. Husband of Fanny (Wallace) Reid of Georgetown, Dumfries and later of Gillfield Terrace, Dumfries who he married in 1909 in Glasgow when he was a Corporal in the 1st Scots Guards based at Ramillies Barracks in Aldershot.
Missing in Action between 22 October and 7 November 1914 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the St. Michael's Church memorial in Dumfries.


PTE. ARTHUR RICHARDSON, KOSB.
Arthur Evens Richardson – age 19 – Private (4345 & 241073) “D” Company, 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Arthur enlisted in early 1915 and in September landed at Gallipoli where he contracted dysentery and was invalided home. He rejoined his battalion in Egypt in October 1916.
Born 1897 in Dumfries. Son of John and Jessie Richardson of Church Lodge, Crichton Royal Institution, Bankend Road, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 19 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
Also named on the St. Michael's Church memorial in Dumfries.

Richard John Richardson – age 22 – Lance Corporal (16918) 9th Company, Machine Gun Corps.

Richard enlisted in August 1914 and joined the 2nd KOSB at Ypres in October 1914. He later transferred to the MGC and fought at the Somme in 1916.
Born 1894 in Dumfries. Son of John and Jessie (Kirkpatrick) Richardson of Church Lodge, Crichton Royal Institution, Bankend Road, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 23 November 1917 and named on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, France.
Also named on the St. Michael's Church memorial in Dumfries.

David Richardson – age 32 – Rifleman (1795) 2nd Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Corps.
David was a carter living in Liverpool when he enlisted in January 1899 as Private (5358) in the local militia, the 5th Lancashire Fusiliers. He transferred to the Army, in the KRRC, in March 1899 and served in the South African Campaign. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre on 13 August 1914.
Born c.1882 in Dumfries. Son of ??? Husband of Sarah Richardson of 13 Gordon Street, Great Homer Street, Liverpool.
Missing in Action on 23 October 1914 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.


PTE. JOHN RICHARDSON, KOSB.
John Richardson – age 19 – Private (2642 & 240844) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Born 1897 in Noblehill, Dumfries. Son of John and Agnes Jane (Tait) Richardson of Dalston Bank, Greenbrae, Dumfries and formerly of Glencaple.
Missing in Action on 19 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
Also named on the Greyfriars Church memorial in Dumfries.


L-CPL. ROWLAND RICHARDSON, KOSB.
Note: Military records have Rowland. Civil records have Roland.
Rowland Richardson – age 29 – Lance Corporal (8135) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Roland's mother died when he was 2 years old and he and his siblings lived with their aunt Agnes Jane (Richardson) Kennedy in Dumfries throughout their childhood. Roland and his wife were living in Maxwelltown in 1911 but he must have joined the army pre-war since he was a reservist and reported to his battalion in Dublin in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre on 15 August 1914.
Born 1885 in Dumfries. Son of the late Mary (Jackson) Richardson (died 1887) and of William James Richardson of 177 St Michael's Street, Dumfries. Husband of Rose Ann (Shearman) Richardson of Welltrees Street, Maybole, Ayrshire who he married in 1907 in Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 22 October 1914 and buried in Canadian Cemetery No.2, Neuville - St. Vaast, France.


SAP. T. RICHARDSON, AUSTRALIA.
Thomas Richardson – age 39 – Sapper (17792) 11th Field Company, Australian Engineers.
Thomas served his time as a joiner in Dumfries before he emigrated to Australia in 1913. He was living in Williamstown in Victoria when he enlisted in September 1916. He landed in France in November 1917 but was wounded on 1 October 1918 and died in the 58th Casualty Clearing Station.
Born 1879 in Borgue, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of John and Agnes (Chesney) Richardson of 106 St. Michael Street, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 10 October 1918 and buried in Tincourt New British Cemetery, Somme, France.
Also named on the St. Michael's Church memorial in Dumfries.

Victor Valentine Richardson – age 36 – Rifleman (3034 & 371015) 2/8th Battalion, London Regiment (Post Office Rifles)
Victor had served in the South African War and was a postman in Dumfries when he enlisted in 1914. Although intended to be a second-line unit, the battalion landed in France in January 1917.
Born 1881 in Dumfries. Son of John and Jane Richardson of Dumfries. Husband of Sarah (Walker) Richardson (later Mrs. Ernest Ridding) of 36 Friargate, Preston, Lancashire who he married in 1907 in Preston.
Missing in Action on 27 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the St John's Episcopal Church memorial in Dumfries and on the Post Office Memorial in Dumfries.


PTE. WM. RICHARDSON, CANADA.
William Richardson – age 32 – Private (73249) 28th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
William was a tailor in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan when he enlisted there in October 1914. He had over 10 years pre-war service with both the Galloway Rifles and the 5th KOSB. He sailed from Montreal in May 1915 and landed in France in September 1915. He survived the war and was discharged from the army in July 1919 but died of tuberculosis on his return to Canada.
Born 1887 in Maxwelltown, Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of James and Mary Jane (Anderson) Richardson of 22 English Street, Dumfries. Husband of Margaret Jane (Shennan) Richardson of Bowman Avenue, Elmwood, Winnipeg, Manitoba and of 166 Lockerbie Road, Dumfries who he married in 1916 in Dumfries.
Died on 21 January 1920 and buried in Winnipeg (Brookside) Cemetery, Manitoba, Canada.
Also named on the St George's Church memorial in Dumfries.


PTE. JOHN RITCHIE, KOSB.
John Ritchie – age 29 – Private (4652 & 241271) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John had been a machineman in the “Standard” but was employed by the Puckha Coffee Company in Dumfries when he enlisted.
Born 1889 in Dumfries. Son of John and Janet Ritchie of Comley Cottage, Stoop, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 29 April 1917 and buried in Port Said War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the Townhead Church memorial now in St. Michael's Church in Dumfries.


PTE. GEORGE ROBERTSON, KOSB. {same man} PTE. G. A. ROBERTSON, R.S.F.
George Affleck Robertson – age 21 – Private (204539) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Formerly Private (240611) King's Own Scottish Borderers. .
George was working as a nurseryman when he enlisted in October 1914. He was posted initially to the 1st KOSB before being transferred to the RSF. .
Born 1896 in Holywood, Dumfriesshire. Son of William and Mary Robertson of Barkerland, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 1 August 1917 and buried in Lebucquiere Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Also named on the St. Michael's Church memorial in Dumfries.

Roberta Ewart Robertson – age 20 – Civilian Munitions Worker.
Roberta was killed in an explosion in the munitions factory at Gretna, Dumfriesshire.
Born 1896 in Dumfries. Daughter of William and Priscilla (Ewart) Robertson of 34 Bank Street, Dumfries.
Died on 27 March 1917.
Also named on the Gretna Old Parish Church memorial.


PTE. DAVID ROBSON, BLK.WATCH.
David Robson – age 24 – Private (S/10367) 8th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Formerly Private (8326) 5th Reserve Cavalry Regiment.
David worked for the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company as an engine cleaner at Dumfries. He was with the Royal Scots Greys for about 10 months before he joined the 8th Black Watch in France in July 1915.
Born 1894 in Dumfries. Son of Henry and Mary Robson of Jardine Cottage, Noblehill, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 24 March 1918 and named on the Pozieres Memorial, France.
Also named on the St Mary's Church memorial in Dumfries and on the G&SW Railway Memorial now in Ayr Station.


SAP J. ROBSON, NEW ZEALAND.
James Robson – age 25 – Sapper (4/1542) New Zealand Engineers Tunnelling Company.
James had emigrated to New Zealand in 1913 and was a miner, living at Onslow Street, Christchurch, when he enlisted in September 1915. He sailed from Auckland in December 1915.
He sustained multiple gun shot wounds and died in the No.8 Casualty Clearing Station.
Born 1893 in Dumfries. Son of Robert and Jane (Bell) Robson, step son of Robert Johnstone of Dumfries. Ward of Jane Robson of 64 Friars Vennel, Dumfries "who had brought him up since infancy".
Died of Wounds on 26 May 1917 and buried in Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun, France.


PTE. WILLIAM RODGER, A.&S.H.
William John Rodger – age 18 – Lance Corporal (S/8080) 10th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Educated at Noblehill School in Dumfries, William enlisted in Ayr and joined his battalion in France on 1 June 1915. He died in the 13th General Hospital, Boulogne.
Born 1897 in Carlisle, Cumberland. Son of William and Annie Rodger of 1 Tig Road, Newton-on-Ayr, Ayrshire. Formerly of 5 Maxwell Street, Annan Road, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 2 October 1915 and buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Ayr War Memorial.

Thomas Handford Rodgers – age 35 – Private (2147) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas worked at the Cochrane & Company Works at Newbie, Annan, Dumfriesshire when he enlisted in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915.
Born 1880 in Dumfries. Son of Thomas and Henrietta (Baxter) Rodgers.
Husband of Alice McMichael (Shennan) Rodgers of Battery Street, Annan who he married in 1901 in Annan.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Annan War Memorial and on the Cochrane Company Roll of Honour.

James Ross – age 23 – Private (13111) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was working with his father as a licensed hawker when he enlisted in September 1914. He joined his battalion in France in June 1915.
Born 1893 in Dumfries. Son of James and Mary Ross of 155 High Street, Dumfries.
Missing in Action on 3 September 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


PTE. THOMAS ROWLEY, KOSB.
Thomas Rowley – age 19 – Private (6085) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1901 Thomas, aged 7, was living with the Bowes family at 107 Shakespeare Street, Dumfries and in 1911 was a Private with the KOSB at the barracks at Berwick. In August 1914 he was residing with Mrs Skachill at 42 College Street, Maxwelltown and, as a reservist, was mobilised. He went to France with the 2nd KOSB in August 1914. He was wounded in the summer of 1915 and in November 1915 returned to France to join the 6th KOSB.
Born 1893 in Dumfries. Son of James and Ellen (McDade) Rowley.
Missing in Action on 9 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


PTE. MALCOLM S. RUSSELL, KOSB.
Malcolm Stark Russell – age 23 – Private (44165) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.

Malcolm had been employed in a dental surgery in Dumfries when he enlisted in the Lanarkshire Yeomanry.
Born 1895 in Dumfries. Son of the late Alexander Russell and of Robertina Russell of 10 Murray Place, Dumfries.
Killed in Action on 23 July 1918 and buried in Buzancy Military Cemetery, Aisne, France.
Also named on the Greyfriars Church memorial in Dumfries.

PTE. EDWARD SADLER, KOSB.
Edward Saddler – age 20 – Private (6276) King's Own Scottish Borderers Depot.
Edward had been an army reservist for about 4 years when he was mobilised in August 1914. He joined the 2nd KOSB in France at the end of August but was wounded and evacuated home. He had returned to the barracks at Berwick in early 1915, prior to a posting, when he was drowned while bathing in the sea.
Born c.1895 in Dumfries. Son of Samuel Saddler of Queensberry Street Dumfries.
In 1911 Samuel, a widower, aged 45, born England, and Edward, aged 17, born Dumfries were residents in a lodging house in Carlingwark Street, Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Died on Active Service on 30 June 1915 and buried in Berwick-upon-Tweed Cemetery, Northumberland.


SERGT. A. W. SANDERS, L.FUS.
Alexander Wright Sanders – age 39 – Sergeant (21332) 18th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers.
Formerly Sergeant (9276 & 24291) 17th Manchester Regiment.
In 1911 Alexander had been a pattern painter with a firm of locomotive engineers in Manchester but was a park-keeper with Manchester Corporation when he enlisted in the city's 2nd “Pals” battalion in January 1915. He was for a time an instructor at Oswestry and went to France in February 1917.
Born 1878 in Dumfries. Son of Charles Stewart Sanders and of Mary (Tait) Sanders of Dumfries. Husband of Janetta Callander (Muirhead) Sanders who he married in 1906 in Lochmaben, Dumfriesshire.
Missing in Action on 12 April 1918 and named on the Pozieres Memorial, France.
Also named on the St. Michael's Church memorial in Dumfries.
Alexander's twin brother William Sanders, Sergeant (65178) with the Royal Engineers, was awarded the Military Medal twice and a Distinguished Conduct Medal.
His DCM Citation reads No.. 65178 Sjt. W. Sanders, M.M., R.E. (Dumfries).
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When his section was holding the right flank of the line with enemy fire converging from three sides, his conduct in visiting posts under a hail of bullets was a great inspiration to his men. He assisted materially in getting two machine guns into action, thereby arresting the enemy's advance. The orderly withdrawal and successful evacuation of the wounded was largely due to his organising capacity and coolness under devastating fire.

Note, he was an Engineer not an Infantry man nor a Machine Gunner!


PTE. ROBERT SCOTT, M.M. KOSB.
Robert Scott, Military Medal – age 23 – Private (2172 & 240651) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was an apprentice plumber in Dumfries when he enlisted. He landed at Gallipoli with the 1/5th KOSB in June 1915 but contracted enteric fever and was invalided home in November 1915.
After he recovered he joined the 6th KOSB in France in March 1917 but was wounded on 15 April and evacuated to the Cromarty Military Hospital, Ross and Cromarty, where he died.
He was awarded the MM in June 1918 as 240651 Pte. R. Scott, K.O.S.B. (Dumfries)
Born 1895 in Dumfries. Son of Robert and Isabella Scott of Wallacetown, Gasstown, Dumfries.
Died of Wounds on 24 July 1918 and buried in Dumfries (St. Michael's) Cemetery.


PTE. WM. SCOTT, KOSB.
William Shankland – age 19 – Private (1162) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
(Served as William Scott)
William worked as a saddler in Dumfries when he enlisted. He landed at Gallipoli with the 1/5th KOSB in June 1915.
Born 1895 in Castle Douglas, Kelton, Kirkcudbrightshire as Scott.
Son of Isabella (Scott) Shankland and step-son of William Shankland of Greenbrae Buildings, Dumfries and of 9 Stable Row, Craigbank, New Cumnock, Ayrshire.
Missing in Action on 20 June 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Townhead Church memorial now in St. Michael's Church in Dumfries.
