This was the third attempt to take these photographs. First time I was late for an appointment so had to give it a miss. Second time I was all set to take them, camera in hand, only to discover the memory card was full.
Third time lucky.

The Kavak was sailing from Demerera - Halifax (21 Nov) - Newport, Mon. with a cargo of bauxite and pitch.
At 04.06 hours on 2 Dec 1940, U-101 attacked convoy HX-90 about 340 miles west of Bloody Foreland and reported one ship sunk and another damaged. In fact, only Kavak (Master Jackson Napier) was hit and sunk. The master, 23 crew members and one gunner were lost. 15 crew members and one gunner were picked up by HMS Viscount (D 92) and landed at Liverpool. [uboat.net] _________________ Ken |

Wikipedia has:
Douglas-Hamilton was one of four brothers who made history by simultaneously being at the rank of squadron leader or above at the outset of World War II, he himself commanding No. 603 Squadron RAF from 18 December 1941 till 20 July 1942.
Educated at Harrow, and Balliol College, Oxford. Douglas-Hamilton saw active service between 1939 and 1944, flying Spitfires in Operation Torch over Malta. On return to Britain, he was killed whilst carrying out reconnaissance over the French coast, and crashed in southern England.
