Drumclog Memorial Kirk was named in remembrance of the Battle of Drumclog fought in 1679.A copy of the banner under which they fought is painted on the east wall of the Kirk

Major Greenshields-Leadbetter is also commemorated with a stained glass window in Bedrule Church which was designed by his father.

James MacNicol came from Melvich in Sutherland where he is listed on the local war memorial. He was employed by the Duke of Hamilton in Lanarkshire before the war. The 13th Bn Black Watch was made up from dismounted men of the Black Watch.

The 8th Bn HLI did not serve overseas during the First World War. After the Gretna Rail Disaster many men from the 8th Bn HLI volunteered for overseas service with the 7th Bn Royal Scots. On 28th June 1915 the 7th Bn Royal Scots suffered heavy casualties in an attack on Turkish trenches.

William Ramsay Mitchell son of John and Mary is also listed on Strathaven town memorial and that of Strathaven Academy/Avondale Higher Grade School.
His father John was a founding member of Drumclog Church, William was Blacksmith at Caldermill by Drumclog. He is shown as Lcpl on his 1914/15 star but pte on his defence and war medals which match the index card.
I proudly display his medals and family bibles of two brothers from Drumclog church to celebrate the end of the war.

Alan Edmonstoune Greenshields Leadbetter – age 21 – Major, "L" Battery. 15th Brigade, Royal Horse Artillery.
Alan was educated at Ardvreck School in Crieff, Perthshire and at Rugby School in Warwickshire, and was commissioned from the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich in February 1915. He landed with the 92nd Battery of the 17th Brigade of the Royal Field Artillery at Gallipoli in April 1915. He was made Adjutant to the brigade and was promoted to Lieutenant in December. He then served in Egypt before moving with the 29th Division to France in March 1916. He was wounded in at Longueval in November and evacuated home for some months before returning to France where he was promoted to Captain in May 1917 and to Major in July but he was killed a month later.
Both the 15th Brigade of the RHA and the 17th Brigade of the RFA were part of the 29th Division.

Born 1896 at Edmonston, Biggar, Lanarkshire as Alan Edmonstoun Leadbetter. The birth was also registered at St, George, Edinburgh where his father was domiciled at 2 Magdala Place. Son of Thomas Greenshields Leadbetter, architect, and of Mary Anne (Usher) Leadbetter of Spital Tower, Denholm.
Killed in Action on 4 August 1917 and buried in Canada Farm Cemetery, Belgium.

I have just entered this as WMR 86624 as I am working my way steadily through Lanarkshire now, currently progressing the Churches.
This may be the only Memorial anywhere to combine the Covenanters with WW1
