Irving, Lt. W.J.T.

Named on the Annan War Memorial in Dumfriesshire as:

IRVING, W. J. T. Royal Artillery.
William John Thomson Irving age 24 Second Lieutenant (89371) 76 (Highland) Field Regiment, Royal Artillery.
Born 1915 in Dornock, Dumfriesshire.
Son of the late George Irving and of and Elizabeth Irving of Tulliesfield and of Albie Croft, Annan.
Killed in Action on 10 June 1940 and buried in the only Commonwealth War Grave in Hornoy Communal Cemetery (to the west of Amiens) in France.

ANNAN OFFICER KILLED. Official intimation has been received that 2nd Lieut. Wm. J. T. Irving, R.A., only son of Mrs Irving and the late Mr George Irving, Albie Croft, Annan, and formerly of Tulliesfield, was killed in France on the 10th June last year. Lieut. Irving, who was twenty-four years of age at the time of his death, was educated at Annan Academy and at Dumfries Academy, and served his apprenticeship as a solicitor with Messrs John Roddick & Son. Annan. He qualified as a law agent at Edinburgh University, and after some further experience in the city, he received an appointment with Messrs Dewar, Oliver Webster, solicitors, Arbroath. At the outbreak, war he was an officer in the local regiment of Artillery, and was mobilised immediately with his unit. He went to France at an early date, and had experience both on the northern front and farther south region of the Maginot Line. Lieut. Irving was young man of fine character, and had the foundations of a promising career in the legal profession before joining the Army,


William was commissioned in June 1939 London Gazette 6/6/1939 p.3785.
The Dundee based Territorial 76 Field Regiment landed at Le Havre with the 51st (Highland) Division in January 1940 but were transferred to the 3rd Division in March 1940.

Lieut W J.T. IRVING , RA listed in the Roll of honour - ARBROATH & DISTRICT 1939-1945 printed by T Buncle & Co Arbroath .

Has a photo of him head & shoulders in uniform :

Lieutenant William J. T. IRVING , Royal Artillery , was the only son of the late George Irving and of Mrs Irving , Albie Croft Annan. Qualified as a law agent , he was well known in ARBROATH , where , before the outbreak of the war, he held an appointment with Messrs Clark Oliver Dewar & Webster , SSC. He was an officer of the local Territorial Army Unit of the Royal Artillery , and was mobilised at the outbreak of the war and went to France with the First Expeditionary Force . He was killed in action in that country, near Abbeville , on 10th June 1940, and was buried in Hornoy Military Cemetery. Lieutenant Irving was 24 Years of age
