Interesting, he's not on my radar.
I have found a mention of him in the local newspaper, he joined up in Dundee in 1903 and was previously a shoemaker. He was 29 years old.

I imagine he had no family in the town hence his omission from local memorials?

Off the radar is right. Father is a William Jones Silk, boot finisher, born England circa 1862; mother - Rose born Midlothian circa 1861. Siblings born Dundee. In 1891 the family comprised 6 and they lived in Kilmarnock, the youngest having been born Kilmarnock.
Killie and shoe making people. Fits just fine. Thanks very much, sir.
