1901 Wigtown Census: 31 North Main Street: James McCredie, aged 20, born Thornhill, occupation: house painter living with his parents, John P and Susan McCredie, plus 2 brothers & 1 sister.
Register of Soldiers' Effects: Register of Soldiers' Effects: James McCredie: 6th Bn KOSB, Pte 24657. Died on service (presumed) 3/5/1917. £2 7s 11d paid to Catherine McCredie on 21/11/1918 and £3 war gratuity paid to Catherine McCredie on 18/11/1919.

Wigtownshire Free Press (14/6/1917): Mrs McCredie, Panmure Villa, Glenluce, has received official intimation that her husband, Pte James McCredie, KOSB, has been missing since 3rd May. Pte McCredie has been on active service on the western front for some five months. Prior to enlisting, he carried on a thriving painter's business in Glenluce and district. He also rendered valuable and much appreciated service to the local company of the Boy's Brigade and to the Parish Church Choir. He is a son of Mr McCredie, Wigtown, and his youngest brother, who is also in khaki, is meantime in hospital in this country.

Wigtownshire Free Press (19/8/1915): Intimation has been received that Private Andrew Aird, C Company, 1st Bn, Cameron Highlanders, has been missing since 24 October. Prior to the war he was employed as a postman at Glenluce where his wife and 3 children reside. He has a brother at the Front in France. His father and mother reside in Sorbie. Any information about him will be appreciated by his wife and parents.

Mike - Aird is also named on the Upper District of Sorbie War Memorial.

Andrew Aird, Private (5836) 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders. Age 35.
Born c.1880 in Sorbie. Son of John and Grace Aird of Sorbie. Husband of Sarah (Ferguson) Aird of Glenluce, Wigtownshire. (Later Mrs. John Clive of Springburn, Glasgow) who he married in 1907 in Kirkmabreck, Kirkcudbrightshire. Andrew was the postman in Glenluce when he enlisted.
Missing in action 24 October 1914 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium and on the Glenluce War Memorial.

Given his age, his battalion and his date of death I think Private Aird had been a Cameron Highlander before he had been a postman and had been recalled to the colours as a reservist in August 1914.

Wigtownshire Free Press (19/8/1915): Mrs James Parker, Crews, has been informed by the War Office that her husband, Private James Parker, 1/5 KOSB, has been missing since 12 July, the date of the charge of Achi Baba, in the Dardanelles. He, and his brother Pte John Parker, of the same Corps, volunteered as bomb throwers, the one taking the right side of the river, the other the left. Both lads, who enlisted in October, are sons of Mr Thos Parker, fisherman, Glenluce who, since writing this, has received a letter from John stating that he had been wounded, and is laid up in 10a Ward, St George's Military Hospital, Pembroke, Malta, and so far has not heard anything about his brother James.

Ken and Adam, Thanks for the extra on Aird. I've now added his photo, having worked out the apparently new release of Photobucket. It had me foxed for a while!

There's something about that photo of Aird which makes me think it was taken in the early 1900s and overseas. The tunic collar, hair and 'tasche have a late Victorian/ early Edwardian Imperial garrison duty feel to them.

Wigtownshire Free Press (26/10/1916): Official intimation has been received by Mrs Parker, Station Cottage, Glenluce, that her son, Gunner Alex Parker, has died from wounds received in action. Previous to enlisting he was in the employment of the Dunragit Creamery.

Wigtownshire Free Press (9/11/1916): Mrs Turley, Knockeen, Barr, has received official notice of the death from wounds received in action of her brother, Pte Wm Clive, 13th Batt Canadian Force. Private Clive joined the 92nd Canadian Highlanders in March, and came over to England in June, where he completed hs training. Pte Clive was the youngest son of Nr and Mrs D Clive, Kilfinnan, Glenluce, and had emigrated to Canada about nine years ago.

Wigtownshire Free Press (31/8/1944): Official information has been received that Lance Corporal Francis Funai, KOSB, has been killed in action in North West Europe. He was the only son of Mrs Funai, Glenluce, and prior to enlisting a member of the Territorials. He was 23 years of age and was employed as a mason by the Department of Agriculture, Dunragit. He was a former member of the 1st Glenluce Company of the Boys Brigade where his conduct and manly qualities brought him promotion and high praise from his Commanding Officer. He lost both his parents some years ago. His sister is married to an airman and lives in the village.

Named on the memorial as H McGarva, I think this is the man named below, Thomas Henry McGarva as the only other H McGarva is a Gatehouse man and named on Anwoth & Girthon memorial.

Wigtownshire Free Press (30/8/1917): Initimation has been received by Mrs McNally, Glenluce, that her nephew Thomas H McGarva, KOSB, was killed in action on July 21st. Privaye McGarva, who was the son of Mr R McGarva, Las Palmas, Grand Canary, was 17 years of age and spent five years of his all-too-short life in Glenluce with his aunt. He received his education at Glenluce Academy, and was also for a short time at Dumfries Academy. Private McGarva enlisted about two-and-a-half years ago when he was hardly 15 years of age. His teachers, schoolmates and friends in Glenluce, with whom he was a prime favourite, deeply regret his death and extend their sympathies to his relatives.

He is named on the Dumfries Academy memorial (also as just Henry)
