Some rare abreviations on the Second World War panel.

A NAAFI name and I'm assuming a Home guard name.

NSRY could perhaps be Nottinghamshire Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry? Here are his CWGC details:

Name: CAMERON, ALEXANDER GALT
Initials: A G
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Lance Corporal
Regiment/Service: Royal Armoured Corps
Unit Text: Nottinghamshire Yeomanry
Age: 20
Date of Death: 26/03/1943
Service No: 7947426
Additional information: Son of Robert B. and Catherine Cameron, of Eskdalemuir, Dumfriesshire.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Face 5.
Memorial: MEDJEZ-EL-BAB MEMORIAL

There are 3 Falside's listed on this memorial which is a very uncommon surname. So uncommon that there are only 3 Falsides listed on the CWGC website:

I thought that possibly William was the father of John and James until I looked him up on the CWGC:

Name: FALSIDE, The Rev. WILLIAM JAMES
Initials: W J
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Chaplain 4th Class
Regiment/Service: Army Chaplains' Department
Age: 35
Date of Death: 07/10/1918
Additional information: Son of the Rev. John Tully Falside, of United Free Manse, Davington, Eskdalemuir, Dumfriesshire, and the late Elizabeth Semple Falside, M.A.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: I. D. 2.
Cemetery: FAENZA COMMUNAL CEMETERY

He died aged 35 so oculdn't have been. However, when I looked James up I found:

Name: FALSIDE, JAMES
Initials: J
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: King's Own Scottish Borderers
Unit Text: 1st Bn.
Age: 19
Date of Death: 25/08/1917
Service No: 27096
Additional information: Son of Jemima Jessie Macintosh Falside, of 33, Livingston Place, Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire, and the late Rev. John Tully Falside.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 66 to 68.
Memorial: TYNE COT MEMORIAL

So William and James were brothers But what of John?

Name: FALSIDE
Initials: J C R
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Lance Corporal
Regiment/Service: King's Own Scottish Borderers
Unit Text: 1st/5th Bn.
Date of Death: 29/06/1915
Service No: 1460
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: II. F. 17.
Cemetery: SKEW BRIDGE CEMETERY

No family details are given. Was he another brother and if so, why no family details given?

From the 1901 census, the only Falside family in Eskdalemuir were
Rev John age 57
his wife Jemima age 44
Elisabeth 8
Annabella 6
John 5
James 3

William Falside from Eskdalemuir (age 17) was living with his aunt and uncle in Govan as a scholar.

So - 3 brothers it is then Crying or Very sad

And the only 3 Falsides to die in the Great War.

I wonder why John didn't have any family details listed on his CWGC entry?

It's all very sad.

Jon was killed in 1915 and notice his details only show his initial rather than his name. I've found this more common in deaths earlier in the war where there is less detail. I don't know why this should be since there are many 194-15 entries which have full details.

Here is a link to the Univeristy of Glasgow online RoH for a photograph of William James Falside

http://www.archives.gla.ac.uk/honour/gallery.php?id=77

I found this when I 'Googled' Falside. The only other entries were for the place Falside in the Borders or for street names with Falside in them. It looks like the name died with the three brothers.

L/Cpl, 1460, John Cuthbert Rutherford Falside, 1/5th KOSB was killed in action on 29th June 1915 at Gallipoli. From Capt. Scott-Elliot's 'War History':

"On this night the Battalion was suddenly ordered to fill a gap in the firing-line to the right of the R.N.D. A French unit had left its place without waiting for the arrival of its relief. However, the French soon arrived and took over their section.

One man was killed and about 15 wounded by enemy rifle fire."

John was 19 years old and an apprentice lawyer. He is buried at Skew Bridge Cemetery, Grave II. F. 17.

It's incredible to think that a surname can be wiped out in a whole country, and yet it seems to be the case with the Falside family.

I did a quick check on the Scotlands People website and found no males with the Falside surname were born after 1856 to 1906 (1906 being the most recent year for births you can search) who were not the Reverends sons, there were no other male Falside's married after 1877 or before 1931, no male Falside's at all died after 1918 and before 1956.

The Reverend John Tully Falside seems to have lived a very unfortunate life, his fist wife the mother of his his eldest son William died then he remarried having his second two sons. All three we know perished in the war.

It's a very sad story.
However, it's a tribute to this Forum that the story of the Falside's has been uncovered after 90 years.

The names of the 3 Falside brothers also appear on the Lockerbie War Memorial.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this fascinating story.

As said above, it's amazing to think a surname can just be "wiped out" like that.
