Can anyone help track down these names from the Bute Roll of Honour in the CWGC or SNWM? I am sure some of the merchant sailors listed will not be eligible.

I can find only one Donald McIntrye of the Cameron Highlanders who died on that date (or 26th September). He wasn't born on Bute but on the nearby Cowal Peninsula. He may be the same man?

Alternatively there is another Donald MacIntyre but he was serving in the Gordon Highlanders and was from Kingarth which is in the south of Bute which to me casts doubt on him being the right man. This is the man who will be listed on the Kingarth War Memorial but I don't think he is the Cameron Highlander.

Thanks Paul
I had seen John A Johnstone RSF and wondered if it was the same man? I don't know if we can be sure.
A very good shout on McAlpin/ McAlpine. I think that's the man. I think you are correct for Mackintosh too.
Many thanks

Pretty confident about Johnston, right regiment, Bute connection for next of kin and the difference between the dates would be, the date he died and the date notification was received.

Thanks Paul. I think he's probably the best choice at this point. I'll see what else I can find about him.
Thanks

I think we have ourselves a non-com here.
S/10635 Private James Nuttall Cameron Highlanders.
I have his MIC and fortunately his service record survives with a link to Rothesay. It even has a date of death just 18th instead of 16th June. He had a SWB too. Discharged as unfit due to military service. All we need then is to prove that cause of death stated in the ROH

I have his death certificate. Cause of death is chronic nephritis. Does that match the service record?
I'll email the DC on to you if you'd like, Paul. |

Incidentally the death certificate has the 16th as his date of death. |

There was some debate about chronic nephritis being linked - or not - to gassing on the GWF several years ago
http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=88457
Perhaps Nuttall should get his own thread in the non-comms section if this is worth progressing?
Thanks
