The Rothesay and Bute Memorial Album lists Sapper John Hosie, Royal Engineers. It states he died of illness contracted on service, 10th July 1920.
Nothing on CWGC or SNWM. He's not on the memorial at Rothesay even though it was dedicated two years after his death.
Found two possible matches:
35399. Medal Index Card and Medal Rolls show nothing to confirm this is the correct man.
88920: Sapper John Hosie, shows his place of birth as Arbroath, and his address as Dundee. He was discharged in 1919 due to being no longer fit for service (attributable to a gunshot wound). Nothing on his record advising his subsequent death
I've not been able to check Scotlandspeople for a death certificate as I have no credits at the moment - it's probably the only possible chance to confirm this man should be on the CWGC. If it doesn't confirm a service related cause of death I think we're on a hiding to nothing. |

After having read through the records for John Hosie, 88920, Sapper, RE, his wife was Davina, not Maggie.
There is a marriage on SP's Marriage Index as follows:
1912 - HOSIE, John Ramsay, DAILLY, Davina, District of St. Mary, Dundee (282/02/0108)
Two of their three children had Dailly as their middle names (details again from his records).
He was discharged 8th February 1919 - disability states as Gun Shot Wound, Sacrum ('tail bone').
I thought there might have been a possibility that wife Davina pre-deceased him and he had married a Margaret/Maggie so I had a wee look and found a death for her.
1959 - HOSIE, Davina, other name Dailly, age 66, death registered in Dundee West (282/02/0408).

1915 Valuation Roll
Tenant/Occupier: Dwelling House, 74 Ardbeg Road, John Hosie
Can't find anyone with the surname Hosie living in Bute on the 1911 Census.

Anne - that's the only link to Bute that I can see too. On the schedule his occupation is Tobacconist.
On his DC in 1920 his father is shown as James Hosie (deceased) a Brewery Foreman; and his mother as Jessie Hosie, afterwards Lavery, m.s. Riddell.
She died on 25 August 1922, aged 61, of TB at Ruchill Hospital, Residence 169 Comely Park Street [son John's address]
1st husband - James Hosie, spirit salesman. (they married in 1883 in Calton, Glasgow) 2nd husband - William Lavery, coachman. (they married in 1910 in Dennistoun, Glasgow)
So Glasgow folk. _________________ Ken |

Thanks for the info everyone. I had a look at the service record, and the 41 pages actually contain pages for the man numbered next sequentially to him as well.
I take it that this looks unlikely to be worth considering submitting? It appears that it's not possible to link his cause I death to his war service. |

John - I wonder if his is him????
Medal card of Hosie, John
Highland Light Infantry 1475 (Incomplete) Lance Corporal
Labour Corps 509849 Serjeant
It could explain the rank of Sapper on the Rothesay Roll - mixing up Labour Corps with Engineers????
His mother's maiden name was Riddell. Is that where John R Hosie comes from???
I don't know if it would be worth checking for a pension record under HLI.
The "cause of death" was so common that I doubt there will be a provable link to his Army service, but............. _________________ Ken |

The Glasgow HLI soldier may be this man:
HOSIE, J R
Rank: Corporal
Service No: 14680
Date of Death: 28/11/1917
Regiment/Service: Highland Light Infantry 16th Bn.
Grave Reference: XXXIV. G. 14.
Cemetery: TYNE COT CEMETERY
Although SNWM lists him as James, not John
HOSIE, James R
Rank Cpl
Service number 14680
Decoration
Place of birth Glasgow
Date of death 28 November 1917
Theatre of death F&F
Cause of death Killed in action
SNWM roll THE HIGHLAND LIGHT INFANTRY
Unit name Unknown Unit attached to THE HIGHLAND LIGHT INFANTRY
Other detail 16th Bn.
I'd be more inclined to think the GRoH would be for a 1917 death rather than 1920

So we have found a brother
James Riddell Hosie Cpl.14680 16th HLI died 28/11/1917.
Glasgow Roll of Honour address 169 Comleypark Street.
Next of Kin from "effects" - Jessie.
John Hosie died 10/7/1920 at 169 Comleypark Street.
Mothers name Jessie Hosie m.s. Riddell.
But we still don't know for sure which regiment John served with?
Is that correct????? _________________ Ken |

I would say it's certain that John served in the Royal Engineers at some point since he has their cap badge on his hat in the photograph. |
