I’m post this topic about an aviator , probably Scottish, that during the second war died in North Italy near Bergamo:
Name: Kirkland, William
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Sergeant (Air Gunner)
Regiment/Service: Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve
Service n°: 2211818
Additional Information: Son of William and Margaret Duncan Kirkland, husband of Doris Millie Kirkland, of Heaton, Newcastle-on-Tyne. (source for this information in www.cwgc.org)
His wife's name before marriage was: Doris Millie Cooper, the wedding date was 12 04 1941.
Doris Millie Kirkland was born 5th March 1916. She died in May, 1993 in Newcastle upon Tyne.

William Kirkland died in July, 13, 1944. He crashed in northern Italy, near Bergamo 50 km NE of Milano with his aircraft: WELLINGTON X HE293, 142 SQDN RAF, 205 GROUP. Airport of departure: Regina, Italy.
Target: Milano-Lambrate marshalling yard. Crew:
Pilot Officer (Nav.) DAWSON, ERNEST ALBERT WESLEY (RCAF); Flight Sergeant (W.Op./Air Gnr.) BERWICK, EDWARD; Flight Sergeant (Pilot) FAIRCLOUGH, KENNETH ARTHUR; Sergeant (Air Gnr.) KIRKLAND, WILLIAM; Flight Sergeant (Air Bomber) SMITH, GEORGE EARL (RCAF).
They are all buried in Milan War Cemetery. You see the web site of CWGC

I believe that William ( father ) & his parents were Scottish because there is no marriage in England and no birth in Newcastle. Newcastle Upon Tyne has been an error, or was shown the city where William ( son ) carried out the training for the Royal Air Force.
I have just done a basic search on a website called Scotlands People and there is one match to a marriage in 1911 between a William Kirkland and a Margaret with a second christian name Duncan www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
William Kirkland (father) & Margaret Duncan (mother) Main married on the 23rd August 1911 at Margaret's address, 104, Middleton Street, Govan. William's address was 26 Church Street, Coatbridge.
They had a daughter (other than son William), Catherine Margaret b. 13th July 1912 at 20, Portland Street, Coatbridge.
Catherine married Charles McMaster on 2nd Jan 1935 in Coatbridge.
Charles McMaster died on 4th Sept 1959 in Hairmyres Hospital, East Kilbride.
His death was registered by a son giving a Wishaw address.

The name of Charles & Catherine's son was Alexander K. McMaster.
The address given was 22 North Dryburgh Road, Wishaw. The same address was given as the usual residence of Charles so this was probably the family home.
I have also found a possible daughter of Charles & Catherine named Elizabeth Murdo McMaster born Motherwell 1943. Charles' mother was named Elizabeth Murdo.
There was a marriage of Elizabeth Murdo McMaster & Thomas Craig in Wishaw in 1961.

I would like to track down Alexander K. McMaster and Elizabeth Murdo McMaster & Thomas Craig ( and their children ) . to ask them about their uncle William Kirkland. Probably they live in Wishaw or nearby.
When I have discovered these episodes of the history of my city and I have remained impressed.
These episodes have been completely forgotten. On the place of crash there is not any headstone to memory of these episodes.
I would like to find any documents about William Kirkland and his crew. any Photos of William Kirkland and his crew, articles in newspapers, etc.

Please can you help me?
Please can you tell me with whom I need to talk for have help?
Many thanks
Sergio, Italy

This detail was provided by his NOK to CWGC, possibly in the late 1940's / early 1950's. It could be his parents lived at Heaton, but more likely his widow lived there. He might never have lived there himself.

Hi Sergio and welcome to the forum.

Sergio - I am sorry, I do not know.

It is possible that the Lanarkshire Family History Society can help your search.
