BLYTH, JAMES Pte. KOSB 27 April 1920
Listed on the Colvend War Memorial.
Stewartry Roll of Honour:
Barnbarroch, Colvend. Enlisted August 1917 - KOSB Transferred to Royal Scots. Died 27 April 1920 at Richmond Military Hospital, Dublin.
I've just got his Death Certificate from Ireland.
Registered at District No. 3 City North, City of Dublin
1920, 27 April at Richmond Hospital
James Blythe (note the E) of The Cottage, Barnbarrack (sic) Dalbeattie, Scotland. Batchelor. 21 Years. Ex Soldier.
T.B. HIP Cardiac Failure.
Informant: Edw Gallacher, Inmate, Richmond Hospital.
(There is no column on the certificate for parents of the deceased)
I can't seem to pin down either a MIC or Service Record. Can anyone help?
From my research, Richmond Hospital had a 30-40 bed neurological unit for "shell-shock" until 1919 and I'm wondering if James was admitted there but stayed on due to his TB?
The only James Blythe born 1898-1900 was at Barrhead, Renfrewshire and he was still there in 1901. _________________ Ken |

Thanks to 1911 census I've finally got this man's pre-war history,
born 13 September 1899 in Castle Douglas, Kelton Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Robert and Anne (Peacock) Blyth.
In 1911 (age 11) he was at Burn St. in Dalbeattie.
He enlisted in August 1917 in the KOSB but seems to have transferred to the Royal Scots (possibly Pte. 50585) however his military record until his death (ex soldier) in Richmond Hospital, Dublin is still a mystery.
Any ideas would be welcome _________________ Ken |

I've just realised that I've been looking at this man on and off for the last 3 1/2 years and this week have had contact with a relative. The family story is that James was injured in a motor cycle accident (possibly a despatch rider, but....) I've been looking at the cause of death again and am wondering what "T.B. Hip" actually means.
I had assumed Tuberculosis but over 3years researching wiser I now realise that the word tuberculosis was rarely used.
Any ideas on T. B. Hip ? (B=broken?) _________________ Ken |

I googled T B Hip and it appears the cause of death could have been Tuberculosis of the Hip Joint.
Good old Google!

Anne - did I say wiser
I've always assumed that TB was a lung disease
My wife has just told me that as a child she had an operation because of TB in her shin-bone.
Should have checked with her first - will I never learn. (err. No) _________________ Ken |

Hi Jane and welcome to the forum.
I'd be really please to get any information about James as his military service is a bit of a mystery to me - as is why he came to die in Ireland.
I did have some contact with Roy Blyth of Wigan but we never did resolve the question.
Since James and his father are named on memorials at my local church it's of special interest. _________________ Ken |
