Some casualties on CWGC have info that isn't always obvious (certainly to me) what it means. Here's two examples.

Additional information: Son of the late William and Elizabeth Low Smith, of Brechin.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: 5.
Memorial: CHATHAM NAVAL MEMORIAL

Regiment/Service: Royal Army Medical Corps
Unit Text: Details, Bangalore
Date of Death: 16/08/1917

Anyone able to explain? |

RFR is Royal Fleet Reserve
CH is Chatham
B7495 is his former regular naval number
It looks like he enlisted in 1906 for 5 years and was called back to the colours in August 1914. _________________

Thanks for that Derek. I knew it must have some bearing upon the man but it's not usually in most CWGC entries.
On a similar subject, I've wondered why some CWGC casualties only have their initial listed and not their full forename? Is it simply not recorded?

Derek
The basic details which appear are those supplied to CWGC by the relevant authority. This included the intial only.
Later the NOK were asked to supply additional details. In most cases, but not always, they requested the christian name be included.

I see, thanks for that explanation Jim.
I had no idea so much of the CWGC record was supplied by the N.O.K.

Hi Derek,
The reason for two numbers with the same regiment was that he served with a territorial battalion. In early 1917 (officially 1 March 1917), all territorials were renumbered within specified 6-digit number blocks - the 9th (Glasgow Highlanders), Highland Light Infantry was issued the block 330001 to 355000.
Of course, the obvious difference with this man is that he was dead before the renumbering came into effect. There are hundreds of similar examples, all of which, to my knowledge, were due to the men being posted missing but not officially declared dead by early 1917, so were still on the nominal roll of the battalion and therefore renumbered.
Best wishes,
Stuart _________________ www.sonsofgalloway.org.uk

I'd never heard of the renumbering of territorials.
Cheers for that Stuart.
