Pte William Scott, Black Watch, died in hospital 1st July 1918.
His name appears on a Roll of Honour for the Ancient Order of Foresters in Hawick.
Can anyone find the name to match the date of death?
I have exhausted my research with this.
(But I have a sneaking suspicion that I may have found him though it is a little tenuous to say the least - I wont say anything else until someone else can prove that they can't trace him with the date of 1st July, 1918) _________________

Anne,
THANK YOU for that - you have confirmed what I thought that the man was:
Name: SCOTT, WILLIAM
Initials: W
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Unit Text: 1st Bn.
Date of Death: 01/08/1918
Service No: 29509
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Face 5.
Memorial: KIRKEE 1914-1918 MEMORIAL
I had found the MIC details but what you found on Ancestry has proved a direct link with the 1st July 1918. And so I'm 99% sure that we have the right man.
I now wonder which was the real date of death was? _________________

It could have been a transcription error by CWGC, why not ask them if they can check the original manuscript documents?

It is not a CWGC error.
The original register gives the 1st August 1918 date, as provided by the Army.
In common with others on the Kirkee Memorial, he was originaly buried in a Cantonment Cemetery which became unmaintaiable.
William Scott is buried in Poona (St. Sepulchre’s) Cemetery, Grave: A.450 _________________ Jim

Jim,
What's the official definition for a cemetery to be declared "unmaintainable"? _________________

Derek
There are various resons why this can be, it happens here with individual graves, at times.
In this case it was due to the partition of India, Civil unrest circa 1947 etc, which meant they could no longer be maintained by CWGC. Their only option to commmemorate the casualties, as required by the Charter, is by a memorial for this purpose ie. Kirkee Memorial within the cemetery there. _________________ Jim

See here for a fairly recent news item about this cemetery in Pune:
http://www.dnaindia.com/mumbai/report_christians-accuse-caretaker-of-running-illegal-nursery-in-hadapsar_1545862
It may help explain why William Scott and other Great War soldiers are now commemorated on the Kirkee Memorial.
Kirkee Cemetery is actually in Pune but it commemorates burials from across this part of North India.
There are other memorials in Karachi, Chennai (Madras) and Dehli which serve he same purpose for other parts of India and Pakistan

Just come to this (7 years late )
He is named on the Liddesdale War Memorial in Newcastleton, Roxburghshire as:

He enlisted in Lochgelly and as Private (S/7076) he joined the 2nd Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) in France in October 1915. At some point he was transferred to the 1st Garrison Battalion of the Scottish Rifles which had been formed in February 1916 and moved to India. William died at Poona in July 1918.
Born 1886 in Castleton as William Milligan. (Source: SNWM and GRoS – Birth Register)
Son of Rachel (Milligan) Scott and step-son of John Scott who married in 1889 in Castleton.
(Source:1891 census and GRoS – Marriage Register)

(Source: Army Registers of Soldiers effects and GRoS – Marriage Register)
Died on Service – 1 July 1918.

The War Memorial in Ballingry for the Benarty District of Fife does not have names and it may be that he is named on the War Memorial in Saline. _________________ Ken |
