Do you have a death certificate which confirms his death was due to his war service / effects of gassing? If so, CWGC would accept him without difficulty. It appears this man died in Toronto, having been discharged from the Army.
CWGC have to act according to the terms of their Royal Charter and will not accept a case for consideration which cannot be proved conclusively, usually by a death certificate. Circumstancial evidence ie. gravestone, newspaper reports, personal letters, etc are good for supporting a valid case, but are not sufficient evidence on their own.
It has to be realised it is not CWGC who make the decision, it is the relevant military authority.
The criteria used by VAC are not those used by CWGC. They will remember him as a Canadian / Canadian soldier, as they do for survivors who died long after the 1921 CWGC cut off date _________________ Jim

I've found out from Canada that he has a marker on his grave which says he died because of effects of gas when fighting at St Juilen.
He's no relative so not got his death certificate.

The marker does not quite say that, but the DC detail does. William died age 32 of TB - Pulmonary ( one year or more ) caused by gas. Do you have his service file or medical record showing why he was discharged home? _________________ Jim

The grave marker has mention about St Julian.
I just cannot put my hands on the paperwork right now.
I did give info to the Canadian site but it crashed.

The marker mentions he was wounded and gassed at St. Julian in 1915, three years before he died. As stated, the DC in the format I have it clears things up and should be acceptable to CWGC via my contacts. What is now required is Pope's service file to confirm against.
There is no point in me ordering it from Canada if you or Marika Pirie have already obtained and paid for it.
Let me know by PM. _________________ Jim

10685 Pte William Pope, 4th Battalion C.E.F., has been forwarded as a case to CWGC as a Non Comm death due to service related causes. His details are now in the system and will be decided by the Canadian Military Authorities. This may take a considerable period of time.
William was the son of the late William and Janet Pope of Aberdeen and was residing in Toronto. He is buried in the Veterans Section of Toronto's Prospect Cemetery.
Will update when further details become available. _________________ Jim

The name of Pte. William Pope was added to the CWGC Debt of Honour register today.
He is listed as " Son of William Pope, of Toronto, Ontario. ". I am querying this as his father resided in Aberdeen and none of the evidence I put forward linked him to Toronto.
