This is the one that started it all off for me from a postcard in my family collection that no-one knew anything about. I was astounded to get an indentification in less than 48hrs and so I set about checking all the names on it to see of any of the men had married into my mother's family line. But no joy! I eventually solved the mystery by showing the postcard to a Great Aunt - the reason was quite simple. The postcard had been bought at the time of the memorial's unveiling because the family had been living in that area at the time and the said Aunt was at the ceremony as a member of the local primary school group.
If anyone wants a copy of the postcard showing the memorial as it was in the beginning, please PM me with your email address and I'll forward a scan to you.

Is this a significant factor in the plane being lost?

I would not have thought so. Essen was noted for particulary heavy flak as well as nightfighters. In peacetime flying, the take off and landing are widely recognised as being the two most dangerous parts of flight and this plane had already taken off succesfully and flown all the way to Germany so I think it highly unlikely that it was some fault with the aircraft and much more likely that it would be enemy action.
