Craigie - Kyle & Carrick

The Craigie war memorial is a grey granite celtic cross with central boss and wheel-head set on a tapering pedestal and square base approximnately 10-12' high. It has an ornate celtic pattern carved on the face of the cross and the commemoration and names of the WWI dead are set in lead lettering on the face of the pedestal. The names of the WWII dead are set in lead letters on the side of the pedestal. The monument stands on the south side of the main street next to no.2 main street.
The dedication reads:
IN MEMORY OF
THE BRAVE MEN OF THIS PARISH
WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES
IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918

The WW1 inscription is quite faded and does not photograph well.

Note, in contrast to the name given in the original posting, the memorial lists the surname of one of the men as "Findlay-Hamilton" rather than "Hamilton"

The war memorial in Craigie village has been refurbished, thanks to a conservation grant from the War Memorials Trust - and financial assistance from South Ayrshire Council.

The War Memorials Trust works for the protection and conservation of war memorials within the UK to ensure they continue to commemorate those who gave their lives in conflict, recognising the monument's importance in local and national culture.

Renovation work to the steps and surrounds at the ornate Celtic cross memorial in Craigie was required to help reverse the effects of weather erosion and decay through age at a cost of £1,600.

Members of the Craigie Village Community Council made a successful application for conservation funding to the War Memorial Trust for assistance and received £1,200, with the Council agreeing to make up the difference in order for work to proceed.

The newly-completed works were unveiled at a special ceremony today (16 August 2012) where Councillor John McDowall, Portfolio Holder for Sustainability and the Environment said: "The Craigie war memorial is a shrine dedicated to those service personnel from the village who did not make it back from war to families and loved ones and the memorial will forever remember and recognise this ultimate sacrifice.

"I'd like to congratulate the Craigie Village Community Council for their initiative in finding funds to undertake renovation work to the memorial and am especially pleased we could support them in such an important project, right in the heart of the village."

Speaking on behalf of the Community Council, Michael Bowler added: "Today marks a special moment for us as it gives us a chance to reflect on the significance of the memorial and those who died for our freedom.

"The Celtic cross is an extremely important part of life in Craigie village and is the focal point for all our remembrance activities every year.

"The work we have undertaken is one small way we can continue to remember those who did not come home to Craigie after the wars and I am thrilled the memorial is back to looking its best.

"On behalf of the residents in Craigie, I'd like to thank the War Memorial Trust for their grant to assist with the work and South Ayrshire Council for making up the rest of the funds to allow us to get the steps and surrounds renovated."
