This memorial is one of 5 plaques (the other 4 not being war memorials) that are mounted on a single wooden backboard. They were removed from Bengall Hall in 1973. Location of Bengall Hall is not known but there is a Bengall Farm nearby which is probably connected in some way.
The memorial is now in the stairwell of Dryfesdale Parish Church in Lockerbie. OS Map Ref: NY 137 818

| HMS Zaria was the Armed Patrol depot ship at Longhope ( Scapa Flow) from June 1915 but not sure what its role would have been the month before when Frank Grierson died. |

I just found this entry on Frank J Grierson with photo of memorial plaque in Dryfesdale Parsih Church. I would like to confirm this is the same person on my church war memorial in Clincarthill Parish Church, Glasgow (formerly Battlefield East Parish Church). I have struggled to get any information prior to his death, but your memorial tablet seems to fit, but not your reference to HMS Zaria. The CWGC site gives his date of death as 27 May 1915 which agrees with your plaque, but he was on HMS Princess Irene, which blew up in Chatham Dockyard whilst explosives were being loaded. I assume FJ Grierson was born 7 August 1888 to parents John Charteris Grierson and Jane Johnston and he was the brother of James N Grierson.
If you have any further information on him or his family I would be most interested. I can only assume he worshipped with our church in Glasgow because he was living in the area after he joined the Navy. I have no service record information for him as yet.
