Not listed on UKNIWM
Located in Westerkirk Parish Church, Bentpath at OS Map Ref NY 311 903
Westerkirk church was extensively restored between 1997 and 2004, and 12 windows by Alex Haynes of Albion Glass, Brampton, Cumbria were installed at this time (one for each month). The December window features stoat with rabbits. Although there is nothing on the window to say (nor any commemorative plaque) this window commemorates the life of General Sir Charles W Pasley KCB, FRS, DCL, soldier, engineer, pioneer, writer and poet 1780 to 1861. A proud son of Eskdale and paid for by the Pasley societies.
A fascinating man by all accounts http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Pasley and the inclusion of the badge of the Royal Engineer Establishment points to his illustrious career.

Due to the lack of any information on the window identifying this as a memorial to Pasley, this unfortunately does not classify as a memorial under the national rules within which the War Memorials Register works.
If there was a guide leaflet or some other documentary evidence that position would be amended. |

The following document was on display in the church when I visited and this helps to understand why I decided it should be included.

Being familiar with Alex Hayne's canon of work, which is typically full of symbolism but short of explanation on the actual window, this is sufficient evidence in my books anyway to classify this as a war memorial, and it is now WMR (ex UKNIWM) 71801.
Sometimes the dividing line of what is a memorial is quite thin.
On the face of the evidence of the guide leaflet I suspect that the September window may alos be classifiable as a war memorial, but would need to read up on that bit of Scottish history.
I suspect that even I would not have recognised this for what it is, if I had visited the church, so thanks. |
