Forgive me, but I'm just think aloud here as I've just grasped that Beattie & Co., monumental scupltors of Carlisle, England, were responsible for a few memorials that we have here in Bonnie Scotland.
Off the top of my head:
Fort William
Lochmaben
Dornoch, Dumfries & Galloway
Glenfinnan?
Any others? _________________

Fort William
Is Glenfinnan one of theirs?

Just found out that the 2nd WM for the Parish of Durisdeer, which is found on A702 78Ns 8801, has the name of Beattie & Co Carlisle stamped on it.
This was 2nd WM for the Parish and erected between Jan and May 1922.
The spelling of the parish during the early 1900's was either 'DURISDEER' or 'DURRISDEER' and today is now 'Durisdeer.
The first Wm unveiled in Nov 1921 in village near church and spelt with one r and this 2nd one with the two rr's.
Still trying to find press cutting regarding the unveiling.
Does anyone have any details from Beattie & Co on this WM please.
Thanks,
Teddy. |

This Company still in business, so wrote to them asking for help regarding Durisdeer WM.
Telephone call today, 3/7/2010, to say have log book with records and paper cuttings and various information regarding this WM, and others in D & G., Lochmaben.
Will be visiting later on this month, date to be arranged.
Will find out as much information as can regarding local WM's.

Brothers David J. Beattie and Joseph E. Beattie moved from Hawick to Murrell Hill, Carlisle and set up their stonemason business with Mr Laing, from 1874 firm trading as 'Laing & Beattie. During 1920 or so the firm moved to Warwick Road, Carlisle and was renamed 'Beattie & Co, Carlisle; today in 2010 this firm still trading in same place under the same name. Warwick Road site covers quite an area with a number of workshops to house the necessary stages involved with preparing stone into a finished memorial.
In 1984 Kennth Beattie was last in line of masons in his family, his two sons did not wish to go into the business so Kenneth sold business to an old established firm of 'Robertson' in Aberdeen, who continued to use the old 'Beattie' name and they closed many of the workshops in Carlisle; then moved the mason operation onto Aberdeen. The Carlisle site was re-designed and today in 2010 it is very modern looking; across from the main office I see to my right a haridresser where before 1984 was the main office, and behind that lie the workshops. One workshop still have in 2010 for any special work to be done.
Graham Robertson, in Aberdeen is the 4th generation in the family of the firm.
Beattie & Co made over 100 War Memorials and many memorial plaques, mainly in Cumbria, but find others in Humberside, Northumberland, Lancashire, Dumfriesshire, and Fort Williams in the Highlands; and others.
Information collected after my vist to Beattie's in July 2010.

Couldnt find if Glenfinnan WM was one done by Beattie; did not think seen it in log book up to 1921. But it could be in next books which never had time to check much of. Will try to revisit and check.

I'm really keen to learn about all the War Memorials Beattie's may have been involved with - Joe Beattie was my Grandfather - he and his brother, David, set up in business with Willie Laing in Murrell Hill before WW1, and then the premesis moved to Warwick Road.
I've just got back from a visit to Carlisle and managed to get pictures of the business from local trade directories from the war years, if anyone is interested?
Regards,
Stoney (newbie to this message board!) |

This is my first attempt at uploading pictures to this board - hope it works!
Beattie and Co was set up by my Grandfather, Joe E Beattie and his brother David J Beattie in Carlisle. I found these images in some trade directories on a recent visit to Carlisle Library
