Cranstoun Parish & Pathhead War Memorial
Location: Junction of A68 and A6093 Haddington Road
OS Ref: NT 381 661
The only way to get a photo of this memorial from the busy A68 without dodging vehicles is to take it first thing in the morning so apologies for the glare in the background.

If ever a memorial needed re-situated then this is it.
For those who don't know it, the memorial sits just feet from the busy A68.
I certainly prefer my memorials in quiet locations. _________________

Why this memorial hasn't been moved before I don't know. There is no parking nearby and it sits right next to one of the busiest 'A' roads in Scotland.
A more sensible place would be in Pathhead or a local cemetery.
I take it the locals wished it to remain there. It is in a very public place and so still serves the purpose of reminding those passing of the sacrifice of the local community.
It's weathered a bit since last year and will probably need some work done on it relatively soon. Perhaps that would be a good opportunity to move it.
It's not an elaborate memorial and I wouldn't think a good monumental mason would have any problem re-erecting it.

Hi I am a new member to this site but ever since I was young I have wondered about this name on the memorial. I too have tried to find details without success. As I live near here I have made local enquiries but all I ever found out was that " the minister at the time had the name added". I'd love to find out her story? |

There are two cemeteries near by that it could be moved to. The Churchyard at Cranstoun Church is only about 100 meters further along the A68 and the New Cranstoun Cemetery is just off the A68 on the B6372. |

This is taken from behind the memorial, you can see the road signs for Jedburgh and Edinburgh just beyond.
This is taken in front of the Memorial. You can see my car parked half on the pavement just beyond as there is no where to safely park your car. |

RD Smith was my uncle Robert who is also commemorated on his home (Elphinstone) Memorial, He was flying near Iceland and was killed there.
Here are a few more shots of the memorial.
