Could not find this one on UKNIWM, also tried the alternative spelling of Durisdeer. I can't remember exactly where the memorial is but it is a very small place so should not be difficult to find.

It is on the west side of the A702 78NS 8801, a good distance away from the village. There is another one in the village itself which I've posted separately. It lists ranks whereas this one doesn't for some reason. |

Whilst visiting the Tolbooth Museum in Sanquhar, I came across a book called 'Letters of a Soldier, Private James Hendrie'. Apart from the letters, the book contains a mini roll of honour for those who appear to have been his mates prior to the war. I photographed the photos and comments about the individuals, as for the letters - you will have to visit the museum yourself as I cannot imagine that many copies were printed and probably very few survive.

I have been trying to reconcile the names in this book with those on the 2 (!) Durisdeer memorials and other local memorials. It all seems very strange.
If we take the 2 Durisdeer (or Durrisdeer) memorials and this book, then there are names in each which do not appear in the other two. I can only surmise that each was drawn up independantly of the other two and I can imagine that there was some local politics involved with perhaps opposing factions?
Here are those named in the book and the memorials that I have found their names on:
J Hendrie - Durisdeer Village and Durrisdeer
F McJannet - Durisdeer Village
J McJannet - Durisdeer Village
J Laidlaw - Durisdeer Village and Durrisdeer
J McLellan - Durisdeer Village and Durrisdeer
S Laidlaw - Durisdeer Village and Durrisdeer
D Hendrie - Durisdeer Village and Durrisdeer
A Waugh - Durisdeer Village and Durrisdeer
J McMinn - Durisdeer Village and Durrisdeer
J McCartney - Durisdeer Village and Durrisdeer
H Lockhart - Durisdeer Village
A Rogerson - Durisdeer Village
G Rogerson - Durisdeer Village
S Gibson - no local memorial
R Bryden - Durisdeer Village, Durrisdeer, Mennock, Mennock School and Sanquhar! - as he appeared on 5 memorials, I guess everyone wanted to claim him so it might be a topic for further research.

Stephen's father worked at Holestane which is on end of Durisdeer Parish on the Penpont Parish end, borders meet. Then parents moved up to Kirkconnel. Stephen was friend of James Hendrie so he was in book - 'Letters of a Durisdeer Soldier' Stephen is on the Penpont War Memorial, bits and photo from book and local paper in 'History of Penpont War Memorial' Also on church memorial in Kirkconnel Church. Stephen is not on the two Durisdeer Parish WM's

The WM in the village, by the church was first to be unveiled in 1921, this has 33 names on; the second WM which was built by the Carronbridge Station, no record when in local papers - this memorial has 28 names, the same 28 as village different is no rank and letters for services only.
Names not on second WM are:
brothers George and Alex Rogerson; brothers Francis and John McJannet and Henry Lockhart. All five boys were friends of James Hendrie and in Book 'Letters of a Durisdeer Soldier' Francis John and Henry all born in Durisdeer and George New Cumnock and Alex at Crairry Hill which is in Durisdeer Parish.
I understand some parish members felt first WM in wrong place and the 5 names should not be on. The McJannet boys also on church memorial inside Durisdeer Church, father was farmer in area for many years and moved to Australia. Teddy.

Regarding the book 'Letters of a Durisdeer Soldier' the writer James Hendrie lists 18 of his friends who died and their are photo in book of them; out of the 18 - 16 are on the village Durisdeer WM. The 2 which not are Stephen Gibson, see above notes, and John Shanks service no 270194 The Royal Navy from HMS Hampshire, death 5/6/1916; as yet no details where born.

Regarding the book 'Letters of a Durisdeer Soldier' I have borrowed copy from a friend, and busy getting a copy to 'spoons' sometime soon.
This book makes interesting reading, letters were published in local paper The Dumfries and Gallaway Standard, then put into book; books were all printed and ready to go out when author killed in action.
