Pte James Dunlop - RAMC - listed on the Hawick Roll of Honour.
No mention in any Hawick press of the time.
Nil James Dunlops - RAMC in SDGW database
Nil James Dunlops - RAMC in CWGC database
Nil James Dunlops - RAMC in SNWM database
There are 4 Medal index cards for James Dunlop - RAMC.
These are numbered: 4366, 114040, 21193, 55383.
None of the above indicate that the man died.
However, there is a A/Sjt William James Dunlop RAMC who was killed whilst serving as T2/Lt in the R.F.A.
His father's address is given as Bushmills, Co.Antrim.
There are 21 deaths recorded in the Scottish Records from 1914 to 1923 in the age range of 18 to 50.
None show a Hawick area death to the name.
Has anyone any ideas where I look now? _________________

Sadly, James is not listed on the RAMC Roll of Honour.
Another brick wall I think. _________________

Couple of suggestions:
1. He survived the war but died shortly after discharge and they decided to add his name anyway
2. He was not RAMC (perhaps a stretcher bearer?)

Despite everyone's help, I'm still stuck with this man but here is his entry on the Hawick Roll of Honour which was unveiled on November, 11th, 1923:

Only two James Dunlops were born in Hawick prior to the Great War, one in 1857, the other in 1903.
The first was illegitimate. His mother, Elizabeth Dunlop, married a railway labourer called William Sawright in 1860. Apart from the birth of a daughter that same year and her subsequent death in 1862 the Sawright's then disappear from Scottish vital records.
The second was born in 1903 at 7 O'Connell Street to James Dunlop and Maggie Little. James was a traction engine driver employed by Hawick County Council. There were two older siblings Jeannie and James. The whole family were natives of Hawick. In 1924 James, a power loom weaver, then residing at 18 Minto Place, married Janet Douglas. In 1951 James' mother died at Minto Place, James registering the death with his address given as 132 Silverbuthall, Hawick. In 1981 James died at Durisdeer aged 78.
* It could be possible that James served in the Great War for a short time and his name has been added to the Roll of Honour in error. Perhaps an obituary or a living relative would hold the answer.
I know the Golden Book lists two Perth brothers who served, survived and died many years later in other parts of Scotland.

Thanks Mark, I appreciate the time you've spent on this.
I knew the late Jimmy Dunlop but sadly I never asked him if he was related to the Great War James Dunlop when I could have. _________________

There's been a few years since this was last posted on. Has there been any progress?
Thanks
