James sent me a PM which confirmed Joseph Hannay Webster is his grandfather.
Joseph was born at Moss-side, Rerrick on 7th October 1882 and confirms the facts and the details given on SNWM and SDGW do not tie up.

I have come across men listed on SDGW as a war time death who died before 4th August 1914. I understand there is at least one who died in 1913.

Sorry - no sign of Joseph on the Stewartry Roll of Honour, nor could I find a news report nor death notice in either the Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser or the Dumfries and Galloway Standard.

I am beginning to suspect, from the information available, that the family moved out of the area (perhaps directly to Belfast) at sometime between 1891 and the outbreak of war. If that is the case then I would not expect to find him listed on a memorial in the area although anything is possible.
