|
|
I was musing about what significant war developments or innovations might have strong Scottish links and I came up with a few (just showing my ignorance here)
Ammunition factory Dornock/Eastriggs/Gretna/Longtown
European base of ferry command at Prestwick (first regular transatlantic crossings)
Building of Mulberry harbours in Garlieston
Shetland Bus
Churchill Barriers, Orkney
development of metal detectors
Carronade
Not thinking of disasters like Quintinshill, more of achievements.
I'm sure there must be some others, can anyone help me make a list?

Would the Churchhill Barriers fit in your list?

The Lee-Enfield rifle.
James Paris Lee was born in Hawick.
Without him giving the Old Contemptibles a class rifle, the Germans may have succeeded in conquering Europe in 1914. _________________

Without wanting to start a barney - how about FM Douglas Haig?

Talk about dropping a hand grenade into a conversation.
Spoon is asking for significant Scottish war developments or innovations.
Haig developed but was he innovative?
I'll toss that particular grenade back into the room. _________________

All great achievements by Scots but it wasn't quite what I was looking for. I was looking for developments or innovations that took place largely in Scotland. Not sure where the Lee Enfield rifle was developed but I would guess Woolwich, Radar was mostly developed in Kent with some work at RAE in Surrey and as for Haig......... I will say no more than agreeing he was famous. |

How about the Anderson Shelter, initiated by Edinburgh born John Anderson, 1st Viscount Waverley. In 1939 on the run-up to the war, he was Lord Privy Seal, and was put in charge of air raid preparations.
The shelters were available free of charge to those earning less than £250 a year, or sold for £7 to those earning more (according to Wikipedia, so it must be true).

Anderson shelter was initiated as you said but engineered by William Paterson and Oscar Carl (Karl) Kerrison - any info that they did this in Scotland?

The person credited with inventing the percussion system for discharging a firearm was the Rev. Alexander John Forsyth, LL.D., for fifty-two years minister of Belhelvie, Aberdeenshire. He invented the Percussion Lock which led to the end of flints, damp powder and flash delay and eventually led to the LE .303 which Derek R mentioned. _________________ Jim
