The Bernera war memorial on the Isle of Lewis. The sculptors were Messrs. Hood of Wick. I've seen quite a few very fine polished granit memorials like this one in the Hebrides. I take it that the storms and ferocious winds that are experienced up there in the winter would easily cause damage and erosion to softer or unpolished stones; or lead lettering.

Just to add a few notes, having visited the memorial today.

It is located in the main village of Breaclet, opposite the primary school, diagonally across from the community centre. It is easily missed when travelling north through the village.

The 'kissing gate' into the memorial enclosure is a tight squeeze, and do take care not to rip clothing on the protruding spikes of the fence railings.
It would appear that the lettering on the memorial has recently been touched up.

Great Bernera is an island off mainland Lewis, connected to that by bridge. It can be reached from the A858 (Stornoway to Carloway) road at Garynahine along the B8011 to Uig and the B8059 to Bearnaraigh, which is the Gaelic for Great Bernera.
