Please do NOT confuse this village with North Tolsta on the east coast of Lewis. Tolsta Chaolais is located 3 miles south of Carloway, along a looproad off the A858 Barvas to Garynahine road. Will post a picture later - the memorial is located along the village "street" outside the mission house.

I'm afraid there was some confusion before but Alex Maclennan sorted it out for us. I will amend the Tolsta post to North Tolsta to make it clearer.

I loook forward to seeing your photographs. There is the five days and five posts rule on the forum before being able to post photos but I see you've already surpassed the five post bit so next week you should be able to add your photographs

As I was photographing the memorial, I spoke to a local resident who pointed out that there were 18 names on it from the First World War. "Why did 18 men from this tiny village have to die because an Archduke got shot dead in Sarajevo?" was his question.

Sorry to appear pendantic but it was 17 men who were lost in the First World War. Catherine Macleod, the 18th victim, is the only woman from the First World War to appear on any of the War Memorials of the Western Isles.

The Tolsta Chaolais War Memorial was the second memorial erected on the Isle of Lewis after the First World War, and the first with the names of the fallen.
