Completely "off-topic" but Vinicombe Street is the site of the oldest motor garage surviving in Glasgow and back in the good old days (the 1960's) was the home of the distinctive green Post Office Telephones vans based at the Western Telephone exchange.
I used to park my Mini there and collected my Morris Minor van for a day of fault repairing in the West End of Glasgow.
Happy days!

Michael Welsh isn't on the Stirling war memorial (doesn't mean he's not from Stirling - I've found quite a few others!) CWGC and SNWM have no links to Stirling either. Some more investigations methinks!!

(He's not under Walsh either)

Edit: I've just found mention of Michael Welsh in a list of Stirling Men for Active Service in the Stirling Observer of 3rd August 1915. (They printed lists of men who had enlisted until the end of 1915)

Michael Welsh, labourer, 16 Lower Castlehill - 14th A&SH. I suppose he could have transferred to the Gordons but doesn't explain why he isn't on the war memorial.

The Smith Art Gallery and Museum had an exhibition called Stirling 100 last year and there is now a Youtube video. It gives the research results for 100 men of the district (not just the city) who died in WW1.
I was intrigued by James Milgrew aged 59. The printed Roll of Honour has: Milgrew, James, Sergt. 2nd K.O.S.B., Slater, 25 St. John Street. I could find no-one with these details but I did find: MILGREW, JOHN
Rank: Serjeant
Service No: 8203
Date of Death: 23/04/1915
Regiment/Service: King's Own Scottish Borderers 2nd Bn
Panel Reference: Panel 22
Memorial: YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL
An article in the Stirling Observer of 11th May 1915 explained it all: Sergeant John Milgrew, of the 2nd King’s Own Scottish Borderers, who is a Stirling man, has been officially notified as having been killed in action on 24th April. Sergeant Milgrew was a son of Mr James Milgrew, slater, 25 St John Street, who whilst on duty as a member of the local National Reserve in England took ill of pneumonia and died there a few months ago. Sergeant Milgrew was a reservist with the KOSB and had been in America for several years. He at once responded to his country’s call and rejoined the 2nd Battalion in which he enlisted 12 years ago and in which he was recently promoted from corporal to sergeant. He was 31 years of age and married. His wife resides at 26 Kelvin Street, Grangemouth. So, both James and his son John died in the the course of their duties. John is commemorated on the Grangemouth War Memorial.

Kenneth Morrison wrote:
Stirling Central Library have sent to me a copy of a page from the Stirling Observer dated December 25, 1915. Patriotic Stirling Families.
"The accompanying reproductions are from photographs of the five sons and son-in-law of the late Sergt.-Major Counter, 3rd Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (the old Stirlingshire Militia) who are at present time in the service of their country. All the sons were born in Striling Castle where their father was about 25 years ago stationed as sergeant-major of the Militia.
Willie, the eldest son, who is quiet and retiring by nature, was for several years before enlisting in the A&SH (Kitchener's Army) a plate-layer on the railway between Stirling and Bannockburn.
George, the next son, was taken with his brother James, after the death of their father, to the Duke of York's School for Soldiers' Sons, and when old enough for boys service joined the band of the 1st A&SH. When only a lad of 14 or 15 George saw service at the South African War with the band.
James Counter (third son) joined the 1st Battalion of the A&SH at Chatham a number of years ago. He spent some time in Malta and India with his regiment and was sent to the front at the end of last year. He is an all-round sportsman and while in India won medals for both football and cricket. He was always a great favourite with the men, by whom he was familiary known as "Sunny Jim"
Richard (fourth son) is fairly well known in the Stirling District, he having been for three years under-footman with Mr. Crum, late of Auchenbowie. He enlisted in the A&SH shortly after the outbreak of war.
Charles, the youngest son, was in the 2nd A&SH at Fort George and left there in August last with his regiment for the fighting line. He was amongst the first of the "kilties" to land in France, and is now a prisoner in Germany.
George Thain [husband of the oldest child, Sarah Counter] had no previous military training before joining Kitchener's Army in August last. He was drafted from Stirling Castle to Woolwich, then out to the front with the 1st A&SH. He was a plate layer and resided at Springfield Place."

In 1911 William and George, both railway surfacemen, were boarding with George and Sarah Thain. Charles (16) was with his mother and two younger sisters.

The above is from page 4 of this thread and an image of the newspaper page is on page 7 (until Photobucket deletes it again!)

It's interesting to see that Richard is recorded as an Argyll on the Canadian CCS records but his service number confirms that he was serving with London Regiment in the Army of Occupation.

Rifleman
COUNTER, R
Service Number 556634
Died 02/02/1919
Aged 26
16th Bn.
London Regiment (Queen's Westminster Rifles)
Son of Serjt. Major Counter and Mrs. Elizabeth Counter, of 19, Upper Craigs, Stirling.

Heading the final column on the WW2 panels is SHARP JOHN.

I ran across this report in the Dumfries and Galloway Standard in October 1943.
SANQUHAR SOLDIER’S DEATH. His many friends in Sanquhar will learn with regret of the death of John Sharp, Royal Artillery, which took place at Stirling on 27th September. son of Councillor and Mrs George Sharp, Renwick Place, he gave up a good going hairdressing shop in Stirling to serve his country in the present war. After the outbreak of war he joined the Royal Artillery, and was on active service in the Middle East. He was invalided out of the army a few months ago, but his condition gradually became worse and his death was not unexpected. A quiet and likeable lad, he had many friends in his native town of Sanquhar. After leaving school he was apprenticed to Mr W. Kerr, hairdresser, High Street, Sanquhar, and afterwards commenced business on his own account in Stirling. He leaves a widow and two young children, who reside at Stirling, and to them and his bereaved parents much sympathy his extended. His elder brother is also serving out East. (D&G Standard 9/10/1943 p.4)

John died of TB in the Ochill Hills Sanatorium, Milnathort Hospital in Orwell Parish, Kinross.
He had been born in 1913 in Sanquhar as John Twynholm Sharp, the second son of George and Annie Maclean (Twynholm) Sharp of 19 Renwick Place, Sanquhar. He married Isabella F. Hamilton of 28 Newhouse, Stirling in 1939 in Stirling.

He is named on the Sanquhar Public School memorial as John T. B. Sharp but his name is not on any other memorial in Dumfriesshire. Nor is he listed by CWGC or SNWM.

Alexander Ramsay is named in both the Stirling Roll of Honour and on the now-lost memorial for Erskine UF Church as serving as sergeant with Scottish Horse. This is the only one with these criteria:
RAMSAY, A
Rank: Serjeant
Service No: 150420
Date of Death: 28/03/1918
Age: 28
Regiment/Service: Scottish Horse
Grave Reference: 47.
Cemetery: MANGOCHI TOWN CEMETERY
Additional Information: Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. G. Ramsay, of Dundee, Forfarshire
Name: Alexander Ramsay
Residence: Oathlaw, Forfar
Death Date: 28 Mar 1918
Death Place: East Africa
Enlistment Place: Dunkeld
Rank: Sergeant
Regiment: Household Cavalry and Cavalry of the Line
Battalion: Scottish Horse Yeomanry
Regimental Number: 150420
Type of Casualty: Died
Theatre of War: African Theatre
Medal card – on KARif roll
Effects: Scottish Horse and King’s African Rifles; brothers – George, David; sisters – Isabella, Elizabeth, Williamina
2/1 Scottish Horse attached to 2/1 KAR; killed at Luambala

I found his birth and census records showing all his siblings who also appear in the register of effects. In 1911 he was in Meigle as a ploughman working with horses which would explain why he enlisted in the Scottish Horse. His name is also on the Oathlaw Memorial. The only problem was I could find no evidence for this being the man on the Stirling War Memorial until..........

The other night the talk at the Local History Society was on the Police Constabulary in the Great War. The speaker had done a research project looking at the conflict of interest between serving as a police officer and serving in the armed forces. He referred to the Stirlingshire Constabulary war memorial sited in Randolphfield (Forth Valley HQ for Police Scotland). He has researched all the names on that memorial (there are others at Randolphfield apparently - I haven't had cause to be there!!) and there was the Dundee-born Alexander Ramsay! The records are held at Stirling Archives (where I volunteer!) so now I can find out when he joined the Stirlingshire Constabulary and probably other information as well. *does a wee jig*
PS I don't see any mention of Police memorials on here. A wee project for somebody??

An update on Alexander Ramsay:
Register and Defaulter Book of Stirlingshire Constabulary 1907-1939 gives his date of birth as 19th February 1891 (correct!), his parish as Mains, Forfar (correct!) and his occupation as farm servant (correct!).
Appointed constable 3rd class on 6th November 1911 and served at Stirling; also served in Grangemouth.
Progressed to constable 1st class by 11th November 1913.
Resigned on 31st May 1915 to join the army; died in East Africa (correct!)
So I've definitely got the right man, whew!!
