The Mariston was sunk 82 miles west of Fastnet by the German U-Boat U-45 on 15th July 1917. She was on a voyage from Almeria to Glasgow with a cargo of copper ore. 28 lives were lost

There is a list of men from the town one of whom was Raymond
"Sergt. John Raymond Laughland, 11th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, whose father resides at 19 South Crescent, is reported by the Rev. C. Lamont to have been wounded last Saturday"

Raymond is also on the Ardrossan Academy Memorial

Peter's service record shows he was a chauffeur to trade; married Emily in Blairgowrie on 4 August 1904; had previous service of two and a half years with the Scottish Horse and was awarded the Africa medal; died at 3rd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station of wounds received in action.

The Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald War database has an entry for Peter on 21 December 1917 showing "Ardrossan" and "of Inveresk"
