The "Canada War Graves Record(circumstances of casualties)" shows that Gilbert died of wounds at No 6 Clearing Statiion and gives the location of Barlin cemetery as "2¼ miles South West of Noeux-les-Mines, France"

Pte. Dugald Dow, Cameron Highlanders, has been wounded in the foot and the neck. and is in hospital. Pte. Dow, immediately prior to enlisting was employed in Glasgow, and also resided there, but he was previously a machineman in the "A & S Herald" printing works. His wife is a daughter of Mrs Caldwell, Glasgow Street, Ardrossan, and is at present residing there. Pte. Dow was previously gassed"

John's service record shows he was an architect living at 24 Bruntsfield Place, Edinburgh. It also shows his family had lived at Belleview, Montgomerie Street, Ardrossan prior to moving to Edinburgh. His personal effects were returned to his family and were "Pipe, Tobacco Tin, Belt, Mirror, Letters, Photos, Card, Army Forms". His next of kin is shown as mother Mary of Belleview and his family as father John, mother Agnes deceased and siblings half blood borther James and full blood sister Sarah.

Additional Information: Son of John and Elizabeth Guthrie (nee Henderson), of 90, Glasgow St., Ardrossan; husband of the late Janet Crawford Guthrie. Born at Kilmarnock
Memorial: TOWER HILL MEMORIAL

There is a full wreck report for "Membland" at www.plimsoll.org which concluded that the ship struck a mine. Mrs Guthrie was also on board the ship, as were the wife and child of another crew member. There were no survivors
