His personal effects were returned to his family and were "Pipe, Tobacco Tin, Belt, Mirror, Letters, Photos, Card, Army Forms". His next of kin is shown as mother Mary of Belleview and his family as father John, mother Agnes deceased and siblings half blood borther James and full blood sister Sarah.

There is a full wreck report for "Membland" at www.plimsoll.org which concluded that the ship struck a mine. Mrs Guthrie was also on board the ship, as were the wife and child of another crew member. There were no survivors
