To save any possible duplication of effort and resources, a non-comm that I have had on file for a while, Private 1992 William McClune, 1/5th KOSB, has had his case submitted via Jim (kinnethmont).

William was wounded at Gallipoli and invalided to the UK. While convalescing, he was found to be suffering from phthisis (TB). He was discharged in April 1916 and died from the same condition in December 1918.

As Stuart advises

Private 1992 William McClune, 1/5th K.O.S.B. has been forwarded as a case, on his behalf, to CWGC / MOD as a non comm death due to service related causes. His details are now in the system.

William died on 13th December 1918 age 23
Husband of Margaret McClune of Springholm, Urr, Kircudbrightshire. Son of Agnes Jane Kirk ms McClune, Springholm.

His funeral took place on Sunday 15th December 1918 from Springholm to Urr Churchyard.

I am making further enquiries regarding his place of burial, it appears no headstone exists.
Will update when further details available.

A big thank you to Ken Morrison for searching Urr Churchyard for William's burial place; unfortunately, no headstone can be found.

In the event of a positive decision regards his CWGC status, what would happen in this case? Would a headstone be erected 'known to be buried in this churchyard' or would he be commemorated on the Brookwood (United Kingdom 1914-1918) Memorial? I hope it would be the former but not sure if a newspaper report is good enough evidence.

Ken has already asked about this scenario in an e-mail, to which I responded-

" CWGC would require absolute proof he is buried there to erect a “ known to be buried “ type memorial. They are sometimes used where burials are in Common ground and therefore cannot be marked. The press cutting would not suffice. "

Let us see what can be found, I have given Ken some further areas to check. If the Council have lost the lair records that is shocking.

In the event he is accepted for addition to the Debt of Honour Roll I expect that if a burial record is found, which can be accepted as proof he is interred at Urr CY but the actual lair cannot be located precisely, a " known to be buried " type marker may be put in place. That failing his name would be added to the the Brookwood (United Kingdom 1914-1918) Memorial.
