Hi
There is an article in today's Galloway News saying that the Crossmichael School are doing a WW2 project and requesting info on any of the WW2 names on their memorial (9 names). Apart from the Community and Village Hall memorials and the church one (which has more info) and of course CWGC and SNWM............has anyone got anything else on any of these men that could be of use?
They hope to make up a booklet and I will of course try to get hold of a copy to post here.

Paul at least between the three memorials there is plenty of information to get them started. The Church Roll of Honour gives dates of death which means they can get the correct details from CWGC
Crossmichael War Memorial
Crossmichael Village Hall War Memorial
Crossmichael Church Roll of Honour
I see Pte James Ross KOSB is listed as being lost at sea so I'd imagine the school children will need to investigate troop ships sunk on that date.
Two died in the UK so perhaps they are buried locally. Has the local churchyard being recorded in the SWGP? There may be more information of family headstones.
Regards

Thanks Adam, one in the local churchyard but the other is too far away and not yet photographed. The one lost at sea was DEMS - soldiers trained as gunners and deployed on merchant ships so we are looking for a merchant loss, not a troopship.
I have them all from CWGC but won't hand them that on a plate, need to get them to look for the easy stuff at least.
A few other interesting ones (out of only 9) one at Arnhem, one at Anzio, one buried in Suez and one killed shortly after D Day.

Hi Adam / Paul
I note that your DEMS Gunner 3194748
lost at sea 16-03-1941,(church & CWGC )
is recorded on the SNWM as, at sea 14-03-1942.

Thanks Wull, I hadn't noticed that. Something for the school to include in their booklet.

Paul
I would query the 1942 date with SNWM, a naval source supports the date being 16 March 1941. The date given by CWGC is almost certainly correct. _________________ Jim
