UKNIWM Ref: 11332 where it is described as a Roll of Honour. My understanding of a Roll of Honour is that it is a list of all those who served (including those who survived) but this contains only the names of the deceased (unusually on two scrolls) but with some great additional information.

This memorial is in Crossmichael Parish Church at OS Map Ref NX 730 670 and contains the same names as the memorials at Crossmichael Community (cross) and Crossmichael Village Hall with the addition of this one man:

Name: IRELAND
Initials: G F
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Machine Gun Corps (Infantry)
Unit Text: "D" Coy.
Date of Death: 30/08/1918
Service No: 128672
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: V. D. 10.
Cemetery: H.A.C. CEMETERY, ECOUST-ST. MEIN

I have no idea why he should not be listed on the other two memorials and have not found him on any other local memorial, although there is another Ireland listed at Ringford and Tongland.

We've seen in discussions about other memorials that families could be quite funny about their son's name being added to memorials. Perhaps G.F. Ireland's relatives only wanted him commemorated in church?

At least he is commemorated in the church. Something like the roll of honour could quite easily have been misplaced over the years and then Private Ireland would not be remembered anywhere in the parish.

Regards

Adam
