Age: 31
Date of Death: 27/05/1915

There is a wikipedia page about the sinking of the Princess Irene.

The Daily Record of 29 May 1915 had a long article about the disaster with the following headlines
"THE SHEERNESS DISASTER
PRINCESS IRENE BLOWN TO ATOMS
SHIP DISAPPEARS IN A SECOND
PROBABLE LOSS OF 250 LIVES
EXPLOSION FELT 22 MILES AWAY
DISTRESSING SCENES AMONG RELATIVES"

There was a shorter article headed
"25 GLASGOW VICTIMS
OFFICIAL LIST OF CITY MEN SIGNED ON"
which included the following about William
"William Smith, who resided at 85 Harriet Street, Pollokshaws, a baker on the Princess Irene. He was formerly employed with the Allan Line, and joined the navy only a fortnight ago. He was 31 years of age and leaves a widow and one child."

Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald 4 June 1915
Intimations
"SMITH - killed on board "Princess Irene" at Sheerness, on May 27th, William Smith, eldest son of William Smith, master baker, late of Saltcoats"

I've seen the ship "Princess Irene" crop up on the forum before, but no surprise since 352 sailors were lost on her.

I hadn't heard of the Allan Line before. It was a shipping company which ran between Glasgow and North America and was founded by the Allans of Saltcoats. Is that connection a coincidence?

The Allan Line was taken over by another company in 1917 so it is unlikely there is a war memorial or Roll of Honour for it.

Thanks

Adam

Thomas' service record has his father, 5 Cross Row, Kilwinning, as next of kin but this has been crossed out and replaced by Thomas' wife Jessie of 20 Springvale Street, Saltcoats, Thomas and Jessie, nee Edgar, were married in Kilwinning on 29 December 1916. Thomas was a dynamite worker prior to enlisting

Thanks Adam. I was not aware of the Saltcoats connection to the Allan Line. Probably a co-incidence though it would be nice to think the firm made a point of employing men from their founders home town
