"ARDROSSAN

Mrs Murphy, 33 Glasgow Street, Ardrossan, has received official notice that her son, Pte. John Murphy, 1st Royal Scots Fusiliers, has died from wounds received on 16th June.
Pte. Murphy was previously reported as wounded and missing. He was a reservist and was called up in August, 1914. He was wounded at Ypres. Prior to mobilisation he was employed at Messrs Nobel's Factory, Ardeer"

The record of soldiers died in the Great War shows John was born in Stevenston, lived in Ardrossan and enlisted in Irvine.

John is also on the Saltcoats Memorial

The Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald has an article on John's brother Alexander who also died which mentions the death of a third brother Laurence, who fell at Ypres. Neither Alexander or Laurence are commemorated on either Saltcoats, Stevenston or Ardrossan or Irvine memorials. Details of Alexander and Laurence posted here to recognise the familys sacrifice.

Hugh's service record shows he was born in Cardiff and prior to enlisting was a Printer. He married Isabella Denholm in Leith on 27 December 1907 and they had three children George born 3rd Jan 1909 in Ayr; Elizabeth Agnes born 23rd December 1909 in Ayr and John Denholm born 31st January 1915 in Saltcoats. His siblings were George, age 32, living in Old Cumnock; Patrick, age 31, living with his mother at 45 Burns Statue Square, Ayr and Robert, age 28, living at 14 Garden Street, Ayr. Isabella was awarded a weekly pension of 29/7 for herself and 15/10 for the children.

Hugh is also on the Ardrossan Memorial
