Hi again ,I as some might know have been making up folders for each man named on the Dumbarton War Memorial, its now extended to any soldier who fought in WW1 who came from Dumbarton.I would love to have as much info as possible on each soldier but with so many men to collect info on it can get a bit sticky sometimes. My project is coming on really well. The bulk of the information Iam collecting is from the Lennox Herald Newspaper which has been a joy but time consuming,I also have had information from this forum and others, local people and any bits and bobs Ive stumbled across on my way.

One person among others I would like to ask about is a Dr Rev Michael Gordon. All I have is a picture with underneath it written Army Chaplin of Dumbarton ,died of wounds in France.I'd like to add more to his folder and to ask if you would help me out if I came to you with any other sparsley filled folders, most of my folders I am pleased to say are ok.I don't want anyone spending money or anything ,just if you had any info already in your files that would be fantastic. Thanks Anne

Annie,

Don't know if this is the right man but we have a Lance-Corporal James McCulloch commemorated here on Wigtown War Memorial. He enlisted at Ayr with the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders. He died on 13 November 1916 at Serre and is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial.

However, it's a fairly common name!

Mike

Thankyou ,you have the right James McCulloch the only other wee piece I have on him is he died at Lille from a gunshot wound. If I find out anymore about him on my travels I will let you know if you like?

John Stevenson,I think its amazing how you found him just from the 1 Victoria street address! That was all I had on him and only because he wrote to the Rev Clarks wife thanking her for the socks as he hadn't changed in a month,he said thing were getting bad since the use of gas shells had become more common, or words to that effect. The letter was published in the Lennox Herald Newspaper.

Iam not to hot on the PC but I am hopeing Hubby is going to give me a lesson soon so I can upload images to the forum.Smile

Annie

If Stevenson died due to gassing before August 1921 his could be a CWGC non commemorated war death.
Let me know if you find out more.

Annie

I have put McCulloch forward to have his christian name included in the CWGC record.

He did not die at Lille.
He died of GSW buttock and left arm in 19th Field Ambulance and was originally buried at Edwards's Linen Factory, Bac-St. Maur near Armentiers.

Thanks Jim,I have got that he died in Lille from our local news paper the Lennox Herald.Iam back at the library tomorrow so I will check this out and let you know what it says, not unless I am in a muddle, its tricky when I have some notes at home and the bulk of the project at the library.Oh as for the Edward Gordon photo ,you are right,I will take it out until I hopefully find proof that he is Edward in the service return. Thanks for your guidance I really appreciate it. Smile

Annie
I should have added that 19th Field Ambulance was at Bac-St. Maur at the time of his death, hence the original burial there. It is about 15 miles from Lille, but nearer Armentiers.

Ah ok that might fit with what I have here then?

DIED FROM GUN-SHOT WOUNDS - Official intimation has been received from the Colonel in charge of the records,Perth of the death of Lance-Corporal James McCulloch,2nd Battalion of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.A special reservist,he was called up at the outbreak of war,and proceeded to France with the First Expeditionary Force, and took part in the great retreat. He was promoted Lance Corporal, but was killed shortly afterwards at Lille,by gun-shot.His cousin,Private William McCulloch,of the same regiment, writing home to his mother at Henryshott,Dumbarton, notified them of the manner of his death.Lance Corporal was for a long number of years in the Militia ,and joined the Special Reserve when that body disbanded. DUMBARTONS LENNOX HERALD NEWSPAPER 1915.

Just one thing I noticed that doesn't fit and that is- Date of Death:30/10/14 ?
